This game is dedicated to the memory of E. Gary Gygax.
"The new D&D is too rule intensive. It's relegated the Dungeon Master to being an entertainer rather than master of the game. It's done away with the archetypes, focused on nothing but combat and character power, lost the group cooperative aspect, bastardized the class-based system, and resembles a comic-book superheroes game more than a fantasy RPG where a player can play any alignment desired, not just lawful good." - E. Gary Gygax, August 16, 2004
We often see games with players that emphasize character build and statistics over actual character. These games, while fun in their own right, too often become about who can deal the most damage with spell or steal, and not enough about why the character does what he or she does. We also tend to see situations where a character's greatest flaw is a 10 in intelligence.
I want a game about solving problems. I want a game that explores a character's motivations and goals. I want a game where combat is not necessarily the central focus, and stats aren't everything. I want something that is simply and purely about having fun with others. If this sounds like something you want to be part of, then I invite you to join my game, Back to Basics.
Race - Nothing with an LA above 2
Class - Any base classes from Core, Completes, and Expanded Psionics; you may propose other classes for my consideration
Starting Level - 1st
Abilities - 4d6, drop the lowest; NO minimums (unless stated in the PHB), rerolls on a case by case basis
Multiclassing - As you progress, I'd like you to take a maximum of 2 base classes. If you can give an adequate reason why your character takes a third, I will allow it, but no more than that.
Alignment - There will be NO set alignments. Your character's motivations are yours to decide, and don't have to be static. Classes that require a certain code of conduct will still be held to it, though the alignment requirements will be gone. If you desire further clarification, it will be provided.
Setting - Forgotten Realms, though a vote will be taken before gameplay begins in case most selected players are uncomfortable with the setting.
Style - Instead of a single complex storyline, the game will start out with some simpler missions given by an adventure guild or some authority figure. If you've played table-top games where you completed a different adventure every week, it would be similar in structure to that. Occasionally, and more frequently as time progresses, there will be larger and more complex arcs.
Post Rate - I would like a post per day from my players, with more being preffered.
Party Size - I'd like a maximum of 6 players, and a minimum of 3. If I get a larger number of good entires, I will look into having more than one party.
I would like your application to consist of a good background and description of your character. I would like the background to be at least a paragraph in length. Race and class may either be chosen at the time of your application, or after you've rolled stats, which will happen after players are selected.
Thank you very much for your time and interest. I look forward to seeing some good characters, and especially look forward to having a game that focuses on fun for everybody.
