For a hundred years, since the shining human empire of Nerath collapsed under the swords and spells of its enemies and it's own terrible weight, darkness has crept back across the lands of men. Far to the north and east of the empire's heartlands on what was once Nerath's northern frontier lies the Nentir Vale. Unlike many of Nerath's former holdings humans have not devolved into complete chaos and some order has been maintained under the watch of the Lord Wardens of Fallcrest.
Even the assault of the Bloodspear Orc Horde a generation ago could not chase the humans from the Vale and now in the current day from slowly growing Fallcrest to the remote farming village of Winterhaven to the industrious dwarven merchant stronghold of Hammerfast to the sleepy barony of Harkenwold and even the tiny fishing village of Nenlast and it's semi-peaceful barbarian neighbors in the Winterbole Forest humanity and the other civilized races of the world fight under both sun and stars and even in the light-less Underdark to hold back the endless darkness.
That would be me, Sillaric
This will be a very good game for newcomers to D&D 4e but its not necessary, everyone that has an interest in trying out Essentials is welcome. This game will be very straight-forward using the standard 4e "Points of Light" setting, the new Essentials Rules and centered (in the beginning at least) in the area directly around Fallcrest in Nentir Vale. The theme here is young adventurers, well-trained but wholly untested facing a dark world. The game will open with the very short adventure in the DM Book from the Red Box then on to HS1: The Slaying Stone and The Reavers of Harkenwold in the DM Kit set. If we make it past that point we will do the Cairn of the Winter King from Monster Vault, HS2: Orcs of Stonefang Pass and then the new super adventure Madness at Gardmore Abbey.
Post your application here is this thread in the following format (you can include your statblock at the bottom if you want, but it cannot replace the regular format):
Physical/Personality Description: A paragraph or more (2 max please) describing your character's physical appearance and personality. If you want to put secrets into your characters personality you can "private tag" them in this area. Include how your character reacts to stress/danger, how your character dresses in the field, in the tavern, etc and how he/she generally deals with others socially.
Background: No more than 3-4 paragraphs (2 is fine if you can get the point across that quickly). Please see below for some guidance on how this needs to be.
Writing Sample: This can be a sample from a game you're in already but I'd rather it be something you've written for this character. It doesn't have to be super long, just do some in-character writing to show case who your character is and show off that you are capable of solid grammar and spelling.
Character Creation will be done according to the new Essentials Rules. The easiest way to accomplish this is to use the Character Builder and choose Build a Quick Essentials Characters. If you like to use the paper books then you need either Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms or Heroes of the Fallen Lands. You can choose from any of the options in those three sources (Character Builder is great because Wizards adds in all the new content from the website automatically). Build your character at level 1 as per standard but note that you will get one weapon/implement for free so don't spend any of your 100 starting gp on that.
Of special note you will be beginning the game as young people in Fallcrest just starting out. When you write your backgrounds don't write that you're a super experienced mercenary that's just arrived in Fallcrest, rather say you've just received a sword from your uncle (who is a retired mercenary) after training with him in your spare time for a couple of years. So, bring on your wizard's apprentices, temple acolytes and ranger's sons and daughters. You don't have to be from Fallcrest but you do have to be from Nentir Vale. Write your backgrounds in the form of how you got to Fallcrest or how you finished your training/apprenticeship and were deemed ready to face the world.
Anything available through Character Builder for Essentials Characters (which means most any powers and feats from published sources) or the two Essentials Heroes books. If you use CB you can either do a Quick Character and customize stuff in the final step or do a Custom Character and only choose from the Essentials Classes which are the ones that have a subclass in parentheses (ie Ranger (Scout) or Warlock (Hexblade)).
I will be taking five applicants, one in each role (Defender, Leader, Striker, Controller) and one wildcard that can be of any role.
I will close the advertisement thread on March 6 at midnight.
