Well, one benefit of both Pathfinder and Eclipse Phase is that a lot of the material is available freely. It's a lot easier to learn a new system if you don't have to hand over actual money to do so....

I don't have this as a requirement, and as a DM I try not to be biased in favour of someone who has a nice picture. It does help, though. Conversely, a "bad" picture can actually hinder your app....
