Description
Ambrose is a man of modest stature, possessing the build of a scholar and scribe with nothing to suggest he had ever known a farmer's labour. Sharp green eyes gaze out from beneath a brow well aged and creased by the pondering and reflection of a man with the curiousities and mysteries of man on his mind. Since embarking on his pilgrimage, Ambrose has kept to simple clothes spun from common thread and coloured in earthly tones. While the earth has provided many obstacles to his journey, he perseveres in the face of difficulty and cherishes the aid found in a gnarled staff of oak generously crafted and offered to him by the lay brothers of the first temple along his path. He is reserved and humble in manner, quick to offer respect and thanks to those who deserve it but wasting few words on those who deserve neither. The Spirit of Life has shaped much of his life and Ambrose believes it to be a kindness to share the wonders provided to him with those he meets. He is not the firebrand preacher bent on the unity of his flock and, if they are provided in an intelligent manner, welcomes the chance to hear the beliefs of others, always eager to see things in a light he may not have considered.

Born into an Asilithan merchant family of moderate fortune, Ambrose cast aside much of his former life when he chose at a young age to devote himself to the monastery that has been called home for a great many years. Even so, it is his past life that no doubt set him on the path he follows to this day. He can recall, as a young child in the Silasean capital of Silasenne, his father attempting to explain the reasons for which they had come to live not in their homeland of Asilitha, but the neighbouring land of Silasea. His father had explained that the family had fled Asilitha in the wake of Gyrom's bloody rise to power. As a boy, the true implications of Gyrom's coup had little meaning. By the way his parents spoke of it, the boy knew full well that this had been a terrible event - and not just for their family alone. But it was simply another fact of life, accepted as readily as a simple explanation as to why the sky was blue. It was as he grew older that Ambrose began to understand the terrible consequences his family would have had to endure were they still living under the rule of Gyrom the Butcher. With overt worship of the Spirit of Light to be considered treasonous and supporters of the rightful King Malthir driven from their homes by the point of a sword, Ambrose's parents rightfully judged it to only be a matter of time before Legionnaires would come for them as well. They fled with their newborn child and as much of their life as could be carried, to Silasean lands. As Ambrose matured, the task of continuing his families merchant business began to rest more and more on his shoulders. He had willingly been taught many of the key lessons his father had learned throughout the years, but the boy himself had little want for a life in his fathers footsteps. In the earliest years of his coming of age, Ambrose began to simply ignore much of the life laid out nice and neat for him to step into. He devoted himself more and more to writings of philosophers past and present, and to the few theological works his family had dared to smuggle with them in their flight from Asilitha so many years before. This fostered interest in reading yet more texts, of which Ambrose was beginning to encounter a shortage in supply. His pursuit of more written word - 'musty old tomes' as his father put it - led him to the doors of the Silasenne Abbey. Ambrose knew from the moment he had first stepped through the formidable doors into a well tended courtyard that it was a life he would devote himself to. His first years spent in the Abbey were dedicated to furthering the education he had so dearly wanted - an education few among the commonfolk could hope to attain. The years passed and seasons changed along with new faces replacing those of old. Ambrose had found his place in life among the monks, devoting himself to the word and prayer of the Illuminating Presence. He had begun taking responsibility for the formidable archives of scrolls and tomes collected within the Abbey, as the elder archivist succumbed to the will of time itself. In conversation with the archivist before his passing, Ambrose learned much of the man's ambitions to see the shelves expanded with verse and word of the Abbey itself. It was with this goal in mind that the next chapter of Ambrose's life was to begin - and the seed of beginnings to many more sown. He would embark on the path of a pilgrim, with quill and parchment on hand. The goal of this expedition as he presented it to the Abbot was one of discovery. For himself and for those who would read his words among generations to follow. The path would not be an easy one - Ambrose knew full well the trials faced by the pilgrims of old. But he knew it to be one he must undertake. It had, as the archivist had said, been far too long since the world had been shared through the eyes and words of a follower of the Light. The journey began mere days after Ambrose passed into his fourty ninth year of life. It was not an easy one as the man had suspected, the sores afflicting him after pushing himself far beyond his limits to travelling would not soon be forgotten. They served as an early lesson for the man who had spent much of his life in the comfort of the Abbey. And as the man drew near to the small fishing village, he knew nothing of the path that lay ahead. He knew nothing of the tale it would become.
