Half-orcs are no rare thing in the cold lands of the North. Kor however, is something of an oddity—a half-orc conceived from two loving parents. His father, Bezel, originally hailed from the village of Quaervarr in the southern reaches of the Moonwood. Bezel was a nice enough fellow growing up, but painfully shy and easily unsettled by crowds of people. Even the few hundred traders and hunters that inhabited Quaervarr were too much for the boy to take—his parents often found him hiding under tables or in wood sheds. The only place of true solace he found growing up was the Oak House, where the half-elf Amra Clearwater taught him the ways of the forest and the ways of the Oakfather. On reaching adulthood, Bezel took his leave of the city and indeed all civilization, moving to the northwestern edge of the Moonwood to live in peace and solitude. His homestead became known as a safe haven for travelers in the area, but only if they came in small groups—any large band found only a simple, empty house. Bezel’s solitude was broken one winter night as he was making a final check of his rabbit traps. Caught in one he found not a white hare but an orcish female, obviously starving and near death. Bezel had been taught by Amra to respect all life, and so unlike many in the region that would kill an orc on sight he instead took the woman into his home. Bezel nursed her back to health, learning over time that she was called L’arca and she had fled from the orcish hordes in the north. L’arca longed for freedom that no orcish female would ever know among her own kind and had been willing to face death in the wilds to risk finding this independence. Travelers visiting the recluse of the Moonwood suddenly found his home warmer, more welcoming, but he hid his newfound wife at all costs for fear of uncaring strangers slaying her in ignorance. Within five summers, travelers suddenly found a young half-orc boy living with Bezel. He introduced the boy, Kor, as his adopted that he had found wandering in the cold lands north of the woods. Of course, Kor was in fact the son of Bezel and L’arca. He was reared to respect the forest and indeed all of nature, learning the ways of the wood from his father while learning of the harsh mountains and the orcish ways from his mother. His skill with a blade soon exceeded any visitor that came to Bezel’s—the youth, being much more outgoing than his father, gladly challenged all comers to contests of skill. In the year of Kor’s 17th birthday, the horde of King Greneire besieged King Obould in the Citadel of Many Arrows. Even in their remote home, Bezel and L’arca felt the repercussions of this battle as roving orcs assaulted their home. Later orcs, fleeing the combined wrath of Clan Warcrown and the Knights of Silverymoon, actually burned the homestead to the ground in their rage at being driven from their hold in the old dwarven citadel. This event more than anything changed Kor’s life, for he saw that even living in seclusion could not safeguard one from the hand of fate. He witnessed the brutality of the orcs first-hand, something his mother had often told him about. And finally he saw the unstoppable power of Silverymoon driving this evil from his land. After much thought, Kor came to his father and mother and told them it was time for him to leave. He would journey to this place called Silverymoon and dedicate himself to the cause of the Bright Lady, Alustriel, to whom the knights had sworn allegiance. He would do this not for glory or gold or power, but to safeguard the land that was his home, and to safeguard his parents. Bezel and L’arca knew that the boy, now a man, was set for this path, and so gave him their blessing. From Bezel, Kor received the blessing of Mielikki—that his blows would always strike true so long as Kor stayed faithful to the forest. From his mother, Kor received something stranger—a list of territories wherein he would find various orc tribes, along with the leaders and histories of each. Kor arrived in Silverymoon alone and penniless. He quickly found that the words of his father were true—“civilization” was not so great and glorious a thing at times. While the city itself was marvelously beautiful, he often found that the people within did not reflect this beauty. For the first time he experienced something he truly hated, prejudice. While most in the city were pleasant enough, more than a few humans, elves, and dwarves were quick to deny him service or raise their prices on seeing one of orcish blood enter their establishment. Kor ignored such fools, focused on his goal of pledging allegiance to the leader of Silverymoon. After much searching, he managed to learn that Lady Alustriel held audience at times from the Silver Throne within Moonshield, the central tower of the High Palace of Silverymoon, and he might go there to present himself for service. Perhaps the wait was always overlong, or perhaps again his orcish blood served as a roadblock, but in time he indeed stood before a woman he could only describe as a goddess come to earth. With Alustriel, Kor found no prejudice or judgment. He presented himself as one seeking to pledge loyalty to her service, but the Lady denied his request, instead telling him to pledge loyalty to the people of Silverymoon and the surrounding communities. When asked how he could possibly serve the people, Kor revealed all the knowledge his mother had imparted regarding the orcs of the northern mountains. In this information, Alustriel saw a great, if far reaching, plan for Kor—he would go to the orcs, proven in battle, and win over their confidence as a spy among their human and elven enemies. In this way, Kor could then relay information about the orc’s plans and movements while also ferreting out other orcish spies. Such a mission, however, required Kor to live a double life—to be truly accepted and trusted by the orcs he would have to be hard, cruel, and renowned among the people as a scoundrel and sellsword willing to do anything for the right coin. Kor left the High Palace a different person, literally. Few noticed the half-orc walking in, but all recalled Rok, a savage that had spit on the very feet of Alustriel in her own court, as he was hauled off to jail. After a reasonable time in confinement, Rok was released and began wandering the Silverwood. He sold his services to the highest bidder in the region for any job, facing off trolls from the moors, frost and hill giants from the mountains, caravan guards from the south (who were all amazed to have survived the fury of his attack), and even the Knights in Silver. After making a sufficient name for himself, Rok turned his sights northward, to the mountains. Using the knowledge imparted by his mother, he sought out powerful orcish leaders and offered his services as a spy among the lowlands. His reputation having preceded him, several leaders took him up on such offers and even trained him with their scouts. Rok relayed information about village strengths, movements of the armies of humans and elves, and caravan routes. Successful attacks by the orcs in these areas (which were in fact engineered by Alustriel and her Spellguard) built his reputation to the point of being trusted by almost any orc leader that truly wanted good information—at a high price, of course. Rok continued to build his reputation when, upon hearing of the demon invasion from Hellgate Keep, he offered his service at “artifact recovery” to anyone willing to pay. His work, of course, also provided ample opportunity to spy out the strengths of the demonic forces in his service to Alustriel. The disappearance of Alustriel in the Year of Rogue Dragons was a heavy blow to Rok. Just as the League of Silver Marches had become a true realm in its own right, the events surrounding the coming of the Magister reversed years of progress. With his patron gone and many in the Spellguard that had known of his work now dead, Rok is trapped in his own identity, mistrusted by much of the country that he has grown to love so dearly. But perhaps the coming of the Followers of Kaz will provide the opportunity for Rok to regain that which has been lost. And in his dreams, he longs to again see Alustriel. Yes, once this Kaz is dealt with he must rescue his mistress, or die trying.
