Description
Malcolm is rather tall and lanky for a gnome, with dark hair and pale skin. He sports a neatly trimmed goatee. He wears muted colors, preferring a leather trenchcoat that reaches down to his knees and a wide-brimmed hat, topped with a purple plume. He carries a tarnished rapier at his side, more for style than for practical use. Malcolm seems rather nondescript, as if he could vanish into the crowd at a moment's notice.
Personality
Malcolm is talkative and pleasant when not on the job, generally happy with life. When on a mission, he tries to keep the mood light with wisecracks and gallows humor. Malcolm thrills in the con, the bluff, and the deception. He enjoys crafting alternate identities, complete with full histories and back stories. Twisting words around, whether to trap a foe in a lie or to simply keep his mind occupied is another favorite pasttime. He has a severe weakness for dwarven tobacco and pretty gnomish girls.
Character Traits
Malcolm is brilliant, possessed of a calculating and complicated mind. He is especially good with words, whether spoken or written, and his silver tongue has opened many doors (and gotten him into plenty of trouble). He is quite the charmer, though not in the obvious way: neither handsome nor possessed of a forceful personality, Malcolm is nevertheless entrancing in a subtle way - with words, with jokes, and with his capacity for deception. He is also quick and hardy, possessed of an inner strength one wouldn't expect from looking at him. In Malcolm's relatively long life, he's picked up a knack for learning a little bit about basically everything he comes across, leaving him with at least a little rudimentary skill in wide variety of obscure arenas. When his charms fail him or his deceptions are seen through, Malcolm falls back on his magery. He quickly sets up screens of clouds and fog to divide and confuse his foes, then summons fiends to frighten, demoralize, and demolish them. He shares the gnomish rapport with elementals, frequently summoning them or casting spells that make him more like such spirits.
Character Flaws
Malcolm is given to brash action, sometimes not thinking his plans all the way through. He excels at the theoretical and the academic angles of planning - not so much at the practicality or the common sense of them. He is easily bored and can often miss obvious details if his attention is not held. Malcolm also has a penchant for lying, though whether it is a pathological necessity or simply an elaborate way of entertaining himself, only he knows.
Contacts / Friends
Malcolm's brother, Garrick Blackwood, is a former researcher at the Library of Korranberg, now working as a scribe in Sharn. Given their somewhat checkered past, it's not surprising that Garrick has a few unsavory skills in addition to the traditional academic ones. Contact Advantages: Forgery, Knowledge (geography), Knowledge (history), and Decipher Script at 8 ranks each.
Enemies
Malcolm's former job as an occult investigator has made him many enemies, both mundane and supernatural. One demon in particular, a Babau by the name of Calibraxis, has sworn vengeance on Malcolm for past humiliations.

Malcolm Blackwood (it is very unlikely that that is the name he was given at birth) grew up in Korranberg, a relatively happy gnome with a happy family. He led a simple life, attending a small arcane university in Trolanport. He and his brother Garrick were quite close, getting into all sorts of trouble in their university days. Both naturally charismatic and intelligent, they ran a number of cons and scams on other students. Though their intentions were far from malicious, these pranks nearly got Malcolm dismissed from the school before he could earn his doctorate in conjuration. He specialized in extraplanar conjuration, teleportation, and the application of magic in battlefield tactics, and showed a noted disdain for evocation and the necromantic arts. Surprisingly (for a gnome, at least), he chose not to study illusion in great detail, claiming that he picked up enough of the discipline here and there to get by without extensive research. After his expulsion, Malcolm tooled around Zilargo for a couple of decades, immersing himself in the elaborate world of deception that is gnomish culture. He developed a penchant for the written word, and worked as a speechwriter for local politicians and council members. He took odd jobs as a scribe or a clerk, and even attempted to publish a volume of his poetry. But Zilargo's twisted, backstabbing character wore on him, and he grew tired of his countrymen's fascination with blackmail, extortion, and intrigue. Like his fellow gnomes, Malcolm loved knowledge, but Zilargoan gnomes wanted to know in order to put others at a disadvantage, to discover crippling secrets and to muscle and jockey for social position. Hardly more than a young adult, Malcolm, hoping to find a country he could truly call his home, packed up his few possessions and took off for Sharn, hoping to make it big in the City of Towers. Though Malcolm found neither fame nor fortune, he did find an elf by the name of Alain Reyes, a private detective who found something compelling in the small gnome. Taking him under his wing as his apprentice, Alain taught Malcolm to focus his talents in confidence, conniving, and conjuration for the greater good, solving crimes and helping people wherever he could. Malcolm's deceptive nature, combined with his relatively unassuming demeanor, led him to become quite successful at this new venture. Mixing Malcolm's talent with magery and persuasion with Alain's analytical, calculating mind led to quite a successful business for the two of them. The life of an occult investigator was a good one - Alain made plenty of money and Malcolm saved plenty of damsels in distress, many of whom were quite grateful. And pretty. One case in particular shaped Malcolm: One of the lower levels of Sharn was being stalked by a killer, a foul butcher that would leave destitute women and part-time prostitutes dismembered on the cobblestones. Malcolm, being a consummate protector of women, would simply not let this stand. Using all the talents available to them, Alain and Malcolm were able to determine that the murderer was actually a demon, bound into the world by a foolish mage. The binding circle had been flawed, and the fiend escaped, devouring its summoner. They vowed to track it down and destroy it. Finally cornering the creature in its lair, the fiend surprised them from the shadows and tore Alain limb from limb. Thinking quickly, Malcolm tricked the fiend into drinking holy water by posing as a hidden cultist bringing him a draught of virgin blood. Choking and sputtering and vowing revenge, Calibraxis the babau was ably whisked away from Eberron's temporal plane by a scroll of Dismissal. The fiend was banished, but Malcolm's business was crushed by the death of his partner. He attempted to revive the business on his own, but the Blackwood Detective Agency never truly made it. Choosing to remain in his adopted home rather than return to Zilargo, Malcolm came to realize that he loved Breland more than the land of his birth. Respecting the Brelish desire for freedom and independence and not wishing to return to the complicated web of social intrigue of Trolanport or Korranberg, Malcolm decided to put his talents to use in the service of his new country. However, the King's Citadel and the Dark Lanterns all turned him down for service, citing the fact that he was not a Brelish native with traceable ancestry. Even the forged genealogies and coats of arms that Malcolm brought in to prove that his family had lived in Wroat for six generations were seen through. One person took notice of Malcolm's efforts, however. A man by the codename of Colonel Fury, he sent a message to Malcolm requesting his services. Fury had researched Malcolm's time as a private detective and was impressed by the gnome's charm and resourcefulness. Hoping to add a public face to his burgeoning cell, Fury promised Malcolm the chance to serve his new home in a different way - but in a way that no one besides him and the king would ever know about. Malcolm seized the opportunity to put his talents to use. Malcolm has a lot to prove to king and country. He's more than willing to give his all for Breland, Colonel Fury, and S.H.I.E.L.D.
