Description
Very few would refer to Kasa as pretty; her looks are purely average, her perpetual grouchiness clearly visible in her frown and the set of her mouth. Fortunately, in her line of work pretty is less important than strong and fast, and her lean, muscular body serves as adequate advertisement there. Pale scars crisscross the dark skin of her hands, arms, and calves, further evidence that she's seen--and survived--more combat than the average denizen of the Planes. She dresses for comfort, close-fitting tunic and trousers over high boots and a waterproofed cloak, and simply standing still she displays a sense of balance that makes it obvious she is equally at home on land and on boats. When newcomers are around, she keeps the hood pulled up over her short-cropped raven hair, her blue eyes and silver nose ring glittering from its depths. In more unguarded moments, Kasa's demonic heritage displays itself in her smile, which displays rows of even, white, viciously pointed teeth, and her finger- and toenails, which are dagger-shaped (although too fragile for use in combat) and the deep red of arterial blood.
Personality
Kasadya stalks through life, her temper as clearly visible as if she had a lashing tail or the all-white eyes of a striking shark. At her best she is merely sardonic; at her worst she's as touchy as a bulette in heat. In between, she grumbles, grouses, whines, and (badly) tries to manipulate those around her. Always foul-tempered, sometimes it seems the only thing that brings a smile to her face is winning. Although relatively intelligent, she has no real, disciplined plan for her life -- in sharp contrast to her approach to combat and other competitive environments, which is highly disciplined, focused, and generally lethal to her opponents. Despite her character flaws, she is a canny warrior and surprisingly loyal for a half-demon mercenary.

Kasadya crouched in the shadows of the overslung roof, watching the goings-on. It was Midwinter, the Festival of the Lightbringer, the most holy day of the year. Even citizens who normally evidenced a very complete blindness when it came to priests and churches were dressed in their finest clothing, parading around behind this year's designated Bringer of Light. Her leg cramped suddenly, and she shifted, knocking a tile from the roof. It fell into one of those random silences that sometimes forms in a crowd, shattering loudly on the cobblestone street. Everyone looked up, and despite the shadowed overhang, the light from their torches and lanterns easily picked out Kasa's form. Unfortunately, most of the people in that crowd knew of her; most of them she'd stolen from. Even more unfortunately, she'd killed one of the Bringer of Light's friends two months ago during a "mild disagreement", and she knew he was still looking for her. She would never have been up here if she'd known the Procession of Light would use this route; most years they went down the larger street just to the west. All of that flashed through Kasa's mind in the instant it took the crowd to realize who they were looking at -- including the Bringer. He bared his teeth and in a swift motion, hurled the lantern he carried directly at Kasa's head. She rolled backwards, the lantern crashing into the wall beside her and splashing flaming oil on her cloak, and then she dropped into the alley next to the building and ran, shedding the smoldering garment as she did. Finally, a piece of luck: most of the crowd stayed behind in sudden realization that there was lit lantern oil splashed across a favored local drinking establishment; calls for buckets and water began to sound. The Bringer and a half-dozen others pounded after Kasa, though, and they were too close for Kasa to use any of her bolt-holes. She fingered the blade--short for a grown man, but she was only twelve--at her side, but seven men was far too many, especially without the advantage of surprise. So she ran faster, cutting through dank alleys she'd come to know well. Three turns later she knew her luck had really, truly run out. She took a wrong turn, skidding on a piece of mushy garbage, and found herself in a dead end. "Literally," she muttered, her eyes scanning desperately for a handhold or door. She glanced back over her shoulder once more, and when she turned back to decide which corner to die in, she noticed that the bricks at the end of the alley were *rippling* like water in a breeze. The pounding of boots sounded, loudly; Kasa was nearly out of time. Taking a deep breath and gripping her sword tightly, she stepped into the rippling bricks... and into a whole new life. Kasa is, to her best knowledge, an orphan; she has no memory of either father or mother, and no idea whence comes her demonic heritage. After surviving on her own for several years in a large city she professes not to know the name of, she stumbled one day upon a gate to Sigil, in a moment of great need. The gate dropped her very nearly in front of an academy dedicated to blade magic. After spying on a practice session, Kasa knew she'd found the place she wanted to be, and she worked tirelessly until she gained entry. More recently Kasa grew restless; she began trolling for work among the mercenaries of the city. She's taken several jobs, all executed competently, but her last employer tried to cheat her and found out the hard way that Kasa is not a forgiving soul. After that it became somewhat more difficult to find jobs with her usual contacts, and so she began ranging farther afield. Sailing the River Styx sounded like a good way to disappear for a while and let things calm down, although she wishes she could actually remember signing on...
