Personality Traits
As quick with a joke as he is with a dagger, Lucian has a knack for setting friends and enemies alike at ease. He's always ready to make light of any situation, and lives for fun and excitement. He rarely seems to take anything seriously, but those who know him well know that he fully understands and appreciates the importance of the work they do, and some wonder if his outward joviality is just another one of his masks.
Mannerisms and Appearance
It's difficult to describe the appearance of a shapeshifter. Lucian is able to assume any outward appearance that suits the mission. In the field, he'll go as a human of average height and build with short-trimmed black hair, brown eyes, and overall unremarkable appearance; the kind to get easily lost in a crowd. This is similar to the unassuming appearance he wore all through his youth. When relaxing with friends, he takes the form of a half-elf, with deep brown eyes, a full head of wavy russet hair and a fashionably trimmed triangular goatee. He enjoys good drink whether wine or ale, and games of chance, though he prefers cards to dice because he is so good at strategy and bluffing. He allows close friends to call him by the nickname "Luc" (pronounced "Luke.") He nearly always dresses in simple work clothes with many pockets, and prefers black clothing, or dark browns and grays that blend well with the environment. He wears simple leather armor on assignment but keeps it covered with mottled camouflaged cloth or disguises. He carries as many as half a dozen daggers to battle: One in a boot, one visible in his belt and another at the back of his belt in the small of his back, one tucked against his armor at the nape of his neck, and one hidden in each sleeve, where he can draw them stealthily in preparation for trouble. He has a silver pin with the insignia of the Unseen Blades, but keeps it locked in a chest at base and doesn't take it on assignments with him.

Background & Other Notes
The shapechanger known as Lucian grew up in a small village in the north of Draugnah, at the foothills of the Krewlog. He was a curious youth, prone to exploring and getting himself into and out of trouble. He was intelligent and precocious, with a knack for picking up on small details, and imitating the mannerisms and accents of others. It was a game he played with the other children, which frequently annoyed them. His mother noted the youth's inquisitiveness and taught him how to harness his changeling abilities more systematically. She taught him to move confidently about other humanoids and study their speech and mannerisms without letting on that he was watching, and to wear clothing tailored to exactly match that of the mark he meant to imitate. In Lucian's late teens, a party of adventurers came by asking for a local guide. They were on a quest to free captives kidnapped from a neighboring village by a group of barbaric nomadic orcs, whose camp was hidden in the wilderness. As it happened, no one in the village, least of all Lucian, was a trained outdoorsman. Nonetheless Lucian agreed to help, having wandered the area extensively in his youth, and bravely donning the guise of an orc, he got close enough to the camp to give an accurate count and layout of all the troops. The adventurers stormed the camp the next morning and slew all of the orcs, but by then all except two of the captives had sadly already been eaten. Luc regretted that he could not have taken a more active role to free the captives sooner, but consoled himself in having at least been instrumental in the rescue of those two. When the war broke out, Lucian was a bored young adult. He'd obtained the best education available near his little village and worked in a few jobs, mainly taking advantage of his interpersonal skills and his knack for learning foreign languages to assist traders. But he never forgot the excitement and thrill of snooping around near the orc encampment, and longed to perform such heroic duties again. He volunteered for the army, but was rejected on the basis of his unimpressive physical strength and fortitude. Also, living so near to the border of Frooche with tensions so high, he might have been considered a security risk. As the conflict increased and encroached closer to his home, Luc quit his translator job to travel about both sides of the border for the better part of a year. He kept an accurate record of the movement of Frooche forces, and even spoke with their soldiers in town to learn what they knew. There was a lot one could learn, Lucian discovered, simply by keeping one's eyes and ears open. He returned home with the discouraging conviction that the war would never end well if tactics didn't change: the armies were closely matched. Rather than volunteer again, Lucian came to a Draugnah army recruiting base, not with a request to join but rather offering a detailed catalog of the Frooche force layouts and movements. He was promptly imprisoned. While Lucian sat in a not-unreasonably appointed cell, extensive background checks were run on his family and history. They suspected him of being a potential enemy spy. The information he provided was also checked, and found to agree with what the best scouts Draugnah had in the field, albeit several weeks out of date in many cases. Some of the information he had was beyond even the deepest scouts had penetrated into Frooche. This process took months, with Lucian never being allowed to stand trial or even being told why he was held. However, every week or two someone would come and talk to him, and try to determine how he had found out his information, and why he wanted to join the army when he claimed that as his goal. During his time in prison Lucian grew bored and enjoyed playing jokes on his captors. At one point he obtained a lockpick from somewhere and freed himself from his prison cell only to ask if it would take much longer before he could go home, before obligingly being escorted back to a more secure prison, and having another set of background and psychological checks performed. Other times he'd attempt to get loose and move objects around, steal extra food, or plant humorous notes before sneaking back into his cell. Soon the background checks discovered that he was a shapeshifter, which alerted those forming a secret deep infiltration unit who were on the lookout for such personnel. Lucian figured out in a short time that his nature was discovered, and his pranks began to include changing into the form of a head jailer and verbally flagellating his captors until a flustered and confused lowly jailer let him out of his cell. At that point Lucian stepped back into his cell and changed to his normal form, nearly startling the young soldier into a faint. Of course, such stunts only put more pressure and suspicion on him, though they were done out of nothing more than boredom. Fortunately his father was an upstanding citizen who had been in the army himself, and the psychological profile eventually decided that Lucian was truly anxious to serve Draugnah out of patriotism, and would make a valuable agent, though he could not function well in the confines of the normal military framework. Lucian was sent to a rigorous training regimen under Kroque Nohands. He picked up on small-unit military tactics and stealthy movement quickly. Kroque's attempts to teach him unarmed combat ranged from mediocre to dismal failures, but Lucian proved an expert with the dagger. He could throw his knife blindfolded at a target and rarely ever missed the bull's-eye. In time, had an especially light and aerodynamic dagger specially made for him, which he could accurately throw at long ranges. He also learned from Kroque the weak points in armor and how to slip his dagger into the least defended vital regions of a humanoid to quickly subdue or eliminate an enemy. Though he could handle the crossbow and short sword as well as other recruits, Lucian preferred never to carry any weapons besides his daggers. If captured, he reasoned, it presented him with plausible deniability: many civilians carried daggers. He considered his senses and wits to be more important weapons than any blade. Lucian has never killed before and would prefer not to, but the Unseen Blade psychologists believe he will readily do so if needed in the line of duty. His superiors in the command chain noted that Lucian will openly question orders if he thinks he has a better way to get something done. But he enjoys training for the Unseen Blade and they feel he will work diligently and well as part of a team of equals, and will reliably carry out assignments to the best of his ability. They also noted his sharp intelligence and tactical cunning, and his ability to think on his feet, all invaluable traits for a soldier behind enemy lines where conditions are constantly changing. Now, Lucian eagerly and nervously awaits his first real assignment.
