Personality
Juura has a rather remarkable way with words that can honor even the loftiest emperor. It would seem he is incapable of negativity. Unfortunately, his immaturity and general lack of discipline mean his silver tongue is usually spent offering up excuses and obfuscation. Juura claims to wish he could return home. Xieng Juura was born unto a powerful Xian official and his favored, albeit low-ranking, consort. Despite Juura being preceded by two others boys, there were strong feelings of jealousy and resentment among the other suitors. This inevitably led to Juura's mother being relegated to the side unless she was officially summoned. The sorrow this often caused only helped to worsen her delicate health. She died when Juura was very young and he has only nascent memories of her. The official went into a long period of mourning and could barely stand to see his remarkable son for several years. One particularly grim winter, the boy fell seriously ill. The official weeped upon the news of his son's condition. A deadly plague had been sweeping through the countryside. It appeared he might lose his one true love's only legacy. Juura was brought into his father's home immediately and treated by the wisest of physicians. The boy's recovery was mercifully swift, but his father was determined to go to great lengths to secure his health. The official spent long hours fussing over Juura's eating habits, hygiene, and level of activity. While the boy viewed much of this as a nuisance, he cherished the time spent with his father. Unfortunately new resentments were being kindled. While none would be so frigid to the child's face as they had his mother; the woman who birthed the official's heir harbored a secret desire to be rid of him. She received her chance when the official caught a fever that would eventually prove fatal. Juura was turning fourteen and was poised to begin a formal education. It was a steady tradition for the official's family to adopt martial careers. It appeared however, that he was to have a different fate. There had been several accounts of the boy manifesting arcane talents and before falling ill, the official had begun pondering a growing local magic academy boasted to rival the ones in Jin. But with Juura's father out of the way,the elder suitor seized responsibility of the boys education. She was supported by several high-ranking brothers and uncles, while the boy had none to speak for him. It was decided that Juura would join a monastery in the distant city of Niem. Despite an earnest effort, Juura disliked the monks' training and made little progress. This fell much to the sorrow of his instructors and classmates, who universally liked him. As fate would have it, a renowned teacher named Yuan Wei came to visit the monastery. He sat in attendance for an exhibition by the more advanced initiates, a class Juura belonged to (though he couldn't fathom why). The initiates were dodging attacks while blindfolded, and Juura was fairing embarrassingly poor. After an unforeseen staff to the back of the head he let out a yelp and bestowed a glow over all in his vicinity. Yuan Wei asked the instructors about the initiate afterward. They uniformly asserted that his character was quite agreeable, even if his skills were lacking. Juura was then approached by the revered master and offered an opportunity to develop his arcane skill, an offer that he eagerly accepted. Juura proved to be a precocious student of sorcery. He was suddenly developing a strong point instead of overcoming a handicap. Master Yuan Wei became fearful of an upstart that relied on raw power over calculated application. He helped the young student to summon a familiar, Akku. He advised the boy to select an owl, a symbol of wisdom. Upon completion of his training, Juura and a variety of other students were sent by Master Yuan to investigate the waylaying of pilgrims at the distant shrine of Dai Ru, a luck deity. The encounter with the highwaymen began favorably. The team saw through the ambush and the ensuing melee swiftly led to the bandits retreating. As it turned out, the bandits had blasphemously converted the shrine into a fort. The team's mages cast several invisibility spells and a breach was successful. However, the shrine itself had a strange property. Every spell cast inside would fizzle. An eldritch hum began to resonate; and a blue glow became apparent. These features would intensify with each failed casting. Juura attempted to escape, but was struck hard and knocked prone. He whispered a prayer to Dai Ru as the blue glow became all encompassing. He awoke in a strange place some indeterminate time later. It was a similarly shaped shrine in a vast barrow underground. It had been abandoned long ago, but there was much writing left behind. The language was one Juura had never seen before and he needed to expend a scroll of Comprehend Languages to understand it. The shrines had been ancient "Spellpools," arcane channelers that harvested and processed magical energy. Most of it was over Juura's head and the author even subtly conceded that the Spellpools' origins were unknown. Having sated his curiosity, he set out following the path to the surface. Juura emerged into the wilderness. Luckily, he had Akku by his side. The familiar companion was able to tap into the knowledge of the surrounding birds and discern the location of a peaceful human settlement nearby. With the expenditure of a Tongues scroll, Juura was able to persuade the villagers to teach him their language in exchange for assisting the Rangers to deal with denizen threats. Having completed the bargain, Juura makes his way towards the nearest large city.
