I would say that doctor Jameson is quite dashing and debonair in his camel hair overcoat and silk waistcoat, his beard perfectly trimmed and his hair nicely combed, but that would be a lie. His face is somewhat scruffy, he sports an scruff like beard that is kept just short enough to look like he hadn't bothered to shave for a week, his hair is escaping his tormented head, but his black Bowler hides that for the most part. This is not to say that the doctor looks dirty or disheveled, no-no-no, his scruff is kept to a meticulously even length, he just looks like life may have gotten the better of him, or that he should sleep a little bit more. His trousers are pressed with a crease as sharp as a scalpel, his shirt is well starched, his posture is straight, but he walks with a slight limp, using a fine looking cane to support himself. He's often seen carrying a doctor's bag, it's a large black leather beast that could probably fit a beagle, a collie or several large cats. His demeanor is as debonair as his appearance. As in not so charming. Dr. Jameson is curt to strangers and acquaintances. Though after a few drinks he can loosen up and be a good sport, making a few jokes and off collar remarks about life. Fortunately for most a few drinks are not uncommon for the good Doctor, as he keeps a 6oz flask of scotch in his pocket... for medicinal purposes.

As Interview with Alienist: requested evaluation. I grew up a butcher's son, we did well but I never thought well enough. My father was a generous man, and some people would always come by looking for handouts like strays who get used to a saucer in the night. I had no taste for such things and so I set myself to get ahead. I worked hard in school, I worked hard at my employ as well, saving my money to go to medical school. I did not have near enough myself, but my father promised to pay for half should I come up with the rest. I did and so I went. I don`t consider myself exceptionally bright, but I know the value of hard work and practice. Also I carved much flesh in my days as a butcher's assistant, that may have helped, my steady hand working a scalpel or saw through a cadaver was and still is quite impressive. After I had completed medical school, I was in my early twenties. I remember it well, I needed an apprentice job, most went to the higher class, I went to war. It was the Crimean war and my mentor was a brutal man, very intelligent, but I thought somewhat sloppy. "No room for pretty in war" he'd often say, with an occasional glare at the nurses. I was young and believed different. Hahahhh... I should have known better. There were more nurses than you could imagine, good Miss Nightengale made quite a stir afterwords as well. All I remember was a sea of blood and screams filled with women, many of them quite a sight for sore and tired eyes. And I can tell you this, they did alright. Despite their mental ineptitude, women are good at consoling and keeping house, and there were more than enough of linens to wash and change. After the war I came home, got some papers for my apprenticeship and was sent off again. This time to China, now there was a place that if God had not forgotten he sure did his best to ignore it. They were a devious lot, but disciplined! I was glad not to have to confront their hordes head on. Again, I was in service of the mortally wounded, but I found a jewel hidden in the dark lamp-lit tents. Her name was Sophie Casademont, a french girl, beautiful and well spoken in english. Her eyes were as blue as the summer's sky, her lips red rose buds, and her hair, when let down, was a soft mass of curls. We spent much time together, I made sure of it, and when the war was over I visited France for her hand. Her father was a queer fellow, a doctor himself with some very great insights, though he was not overjoyed at the thought of his daughter marrying an Englishman, he was glad she was marrying a doctor. Once back in God`s country I opened my own practice and was doing well. Life was good, Dr. Casademont's dowry was substancial enough for us to purchase a nice place away from the dregs of the city. I was commissioned for several services, some of them wealthy, some not so much. My wife was adamant that we served anyone who came. I conceded as long as they could pay... I think I went through a box of soap a week. Even at the sight of some of these people I felt the need to wash. Filthy bastards. I should have listened to my gut, I should have known better than take the advice of a woman over my own good sense. If I had I would probably not need this cane. It was after a particularly extensive procedure, an amputation, that it occurred. They were of the basest class, but my record was very good and my price reasonable, so they brought him to me. The infection had run deep, his leg was near black, it had to go. It went and so did the man. In truth I don`t know why I bothered, he was as good as dead when he came in, all that could come of it was a bill for the family... a note to you: opinions such as these should be voiced in the privy of your personal dwelling, at your place of employ people may hear you. In this case they did and they waited. As I locked up my office I felt the cold dirty blade pierce my coat, soaking my shirt with blood as it cut deep into my back. A inch either way and I`d be dead. Instead I fell limp to the ground, the assailant ran as whistles blew and the bobbies came. T'was the dead man's brother I have no doubt. After the assault I was lid up for a month, healing and so forth. I drank muchly, Scotch was my medicine, it dulled the pain well enough and tasted quite nice. Sophie still minded the business, or so she said. I know now that wasn't precisely what she was minding. But she was a carnal woman, as the baser sex can often be, I was lid up so she found someone to scratch her itch elsewhere. Even with a mouth full of scotch I could smell it on her. This was in the mid 60s you must know. We still hadn't had any children, the cursed cow, I would not doubt be she sabotaged that as well. I was recuperating, I spent much of my time at the university and at the office. New medical discoveries seemed to be happening daily and I wished to keep up on such things. I couldn't stand to be around her, even as I lay with her, her beauty did not deter me from thoughts of her a whore. It was then things went from bad to worst, soon I took to visiting prostitutes. I still blame the commission, officers often solicited me to the order of checking nurses to see if they were prostituting themselves. Some claimed it an indignity, and my wife thought it a foul practice. At another time I may have listened to her, but at this point my train of thought was "I married one, so why not." This train once coated in scotch kept the same wording but differed some in its practice. She found a matchbook from a tavern that had a reputation for lewd activities and flew into a rage. I called her a whore, and one thing led to another. Our battles became more frequent as did our philandering, she was a whore, and I am convinced that all women are given the right price. Isn't that what marriage is? an expensive whoreship for the woman's convenience? Who would ever buy a whore a house and keep her well? every married man, that's bloody well who. As you know, this is what led me to you my good doctor. I grew sick of the charade, perhaps I thought that she had stopped sleeping about or simply denied it. If she wasn't so damnably beautiful it would have been an easy choice and lord knows done much earlier. A divorce. By Jobe that word haunts me still. Tis hard to better your peers with such scandal hangs about. Twas like a foul odor that could not be washed off. I tried to hire a Dick referred by a friend, but it didn't work out, so I had to settle for a young hoodlum. I'll be damned, but he was good at what he did, I had proof of her adultery in less than a week, and papers drawn up the next day. I still drink and have a game of darts with the lad when I see him about, the Dick too, but less often. So where was I, oh yes. Women are whores. Apparently there's something wrong with this statement, I suppose given our good Queen is of the sultry sex that it's not right to say so. No, no, t'wasn't the crown as such, but nurses that did me in. Well, you know I was asked my expert opinion, "Did I believe they were engaged in prostitution". I didn't need to poke at their twat to give my answer, but I was asked, no Demanded to inspect their genitalia for signs of prostitution. I inspected and gave my answer, yes! they`re all bloody whores. What signs you ask? they had a vagina, that's enough. *swigs scotch* Yes, yes, I am quite understanding of the plight of women and their demands for the vote and rights and so forth. Thank you for your time again Doc. Same time next week?

Dr. William Jameson lives in the Hallows(upper), it’s a beautiful lot in the hills with a low stone wall surrounding it. It is still the place he did before his divorce, the one good thing that came of his marriage, of which is fairly common knowledge, though the exact circumstances surrounding it are not (ie detective etc, the adultery is known). His housemaid Lousille is a middle aged black woman that he kept on after his divorce; he suspects her of planting some of the clues that helped him discover what his wife was up to and both respects and despises her for it. Her loyalty is unquestionable, her work ethic outstanding and her salary cheap, she can’t cook entirely well, but the former makes up for the latter. His practice is located a few miles south in Islington, its a relatively small place with a sitting room, office and two patient rooms (one for surgery and one other). He has a secretary/nurse Olivia Wetherby and an apprentice named Hermes Phillips. His rates are fair and he is known for professionalism and discretion. Despite the exceptional quality of his work, the social impact of his divorce has lent him little grace for clientele, he’s since lost some of his wealthier clients and sometimes thinks he only got them because they were sleeping with his wife. Soon his business was threatened with financial ruin, it was then, he took on an apprentice to help pay for the practice. The semi-competent Hermes did not do so well at Charing Cross Hospital but his family was adamant, they had a lawyer son and should have a doctor as well. Mr. Phillips granted Dr. Jameson enough to pay off a loan in exchange for taking on the boy, setup costs for taking on a second hand they called it. Mr. Phillips was a large man, physically and in personality, he talked loud and was somewhat obnoxious, he even agreed with William’s divorce! “No time for this nonsense of pissing around to save face. I’d have kicked her to the curb so fast they’d have to repave the thing! HA!” It jilted “Bill” to have to take this man’s money, the man grated on his nerves most of the time, but it was that or loose his shirt, hold up in some flat and work at the foundling hospital or something. Besides this taking on the boy also helped Dr. Jameson socially, his new tie to the upper middle-class who referred him some patients and lifted his reputation. Hermes benefited as well, the one on one time with Dr. Jameson did wonders for the boy, perhaps it was the Doctor's professionalism, or perhaps it was that while the Doctor frightened the bejesus out of him. Heck, he even pulled his weight now and again Olivia is 24, a pretty girl who dresses quite plain, in drab colors and with her dark hair in a bun. Somewhat prudish, she ignores most men as boorish and ignorant galoots. They're relationship is kept quite professional, he doesn't open up to her about his past and rarely gripes about his patients no matter how obviously they annoy him. She admires his skill, dignity and professionalism. Before working with William she had bad experiences with less than professional doctors in hospitals and go was quite gracious to work in a private practice. William likes her; there could be possible evolution in the relationship. Currently he is very cordial, though he does show more kindness and compassion to her than most and she does take notice, but it goes unmentioned. She is tremendously loyal and would often stay extra hours without asking for more pay, sometimes even running personal errands for him. Olivia would know of his divorce in detail, but such would come from his housemaid, not him and does pity him some. She shows her love/respect for him through little things, such as making sure all his paperwork is in order before he asks, with a cup of tea mixed as he likes with something extra like a mint or shortbread on the side. She is likely the only woman he actually respects (besides his mother, god rest her soul), even so he often takes her for granted. She knows of his drinking and occasional whoring, but actually pities rather than resents him for it. I could see her being extremely distraught if he came in wounded or particularly stressed, offering to tend to him, though its questionable whether he'd accept her help. He would be more likely to open up to her about things that she was not directly involved in, as under these circumstances he would not be looking at her as an employee. As for Hermes, he's younger again at 21, red hair and freckles, very well read with a very still hand. Despite his still hand he is somewhat awkward and clumsy; he can cut like surgeon, but may knock over a tray or bump into someone on the way there and his perception is just abhorrent. This all irritates Dr. Jameson to no end, he would likely fire him if he did not want to keep in good graces with the boys father. Even that in mind he often looses his temper with the boy but now Olivia will often step in when she notices the doctor becoming heated.

How does he interact with the others within a group? What is his role (and I don't mean “meatshield”, “wizard,” etc.)? He generally trusts his demeanor to get the message across most times, and is otherwise curt. When he's drinking he'll be much more flowery in his speech but they're flowers that have been well fertilized and trodden on. Despite his rough exterior, he will go out of his way to help anyone in harm. He's the type to punch you in the face but then bandage you up because you fell on a bottle. And how is he “not as he seems”? He's pretty well how he seems, probably sharper than he appears and much more caring... but then maybe not. His life has left him conflicted in regards to his willingness to trust others, particularly women. What are his goals, conscious and perhaps subconscious? He would like to go into politics. As an upper middle class officer it was his ultimate goal. Now he is but a doctor and his hopes are squashed. So to build back a reputation and find a good woman he could trust would be in line with what he wants. How easily does he love? Not necessarily romantic love, but in general? Does he show it? How so? Romantically not very. Otherwise he does care for the few friends and family he has, and he will go out of his way to provide help to them, be it monetary, doctoring, or through connections he has in the military. Is he racist at all or has he ever been in his past? He's more sexist than racist, but that means little. His particular distaste is for the french, though he's not overly fond of Scots, the Irish, Russians, Asian folk or Negros... I think that's it. Oh yes, and Americans he doesn't like them either. All people believe something that is not true, both about the world around them and about themselves. What lies/untruths does your character believe about themselves and the world around them? Women are whores, British are superior, and the average person is an imbecile. How is he about material possessions? How does he feel about money? When he has extra cash, what does he do with it? Quality over quantity. Money is measure of worth, it's best to have more than less. Assuming his taxes are paid, and his estate in order the rest gets pissed it away on booze and whores. Though occasionally he'll buy new medical books and equipment, it seems that there are advances everyday and he likes to keep up on them. What does he perceive his major problems to be? What does he perceive the solutions to those problems to be? Besides marrying a whore and being injured in war, he knows he has a problem with drinking and whores. Solution, money and respect. First he needs the money, then earn respect, then maybe he'll have some self respect, then get a wife and children, then go into politics. Unfortunately he keeps pissing away his money so step one is kind of a hurdle. What are his religious beliefs? In the great Church of England, as every Englishman should. Though its more for face value, he doesn't particularly believe in much, but it's convenient to have someone to curse and praise on occasion. What does he fear? At the moment he's fairly self loathing and deviant, he would hate to have such things made public, but at the moment he's more than safe as he's not close to important enough to have such things publicized. How much of a temper does he have? This depends how long since his last drink, too long and he's bound to be cranky as all hell. In Character Questions: You’ve just returned to civilization after a long expedition into the wilds. Where in town do you go first and why? Anywhere to get a drink, because I've already got the sweats and then for a bath and shave. Then for another drink and maybe a night with the boys, because I can only assume time in the wilds was either hunting or war, and whether we succeeded or failed we'd deserve or need a few drinks. You’re sitting in a bar with a few friends when someone armed with a knife bursts in. What do you do? Drink my scotch and wait for someone to do something stupid. Maybe patch up someone or egg on someone involved in the skirmish should it prove interesting. An ogre guards a door that you need to get through. How do you deal with the ogre? An ogre? you must be kidding... I would politely explain to the creature that he could not possibly be real and hope he disappears in a puff of logic, hmm? You have uncovered information that reveals that your sworn enemy is in town. He’s staying at an inn in a rough area. What do you do? Tell some shady looking fellows that he's actually very rich but hiding out here and that his teeth are porcelain over gold. What’s one thing about other people that never fails to annoy you? Idle chatter about the weather.
[sb=sp][/sb]
