Before the Embrace, Charlie was already showing signs that drew his eventual sire to him. He was a night owl and a passionate researcher of history at the University of Chicago. His passion was, admittedly, about one third actual love of the subject, one third escapist Indiana Jones fantasies, and one third preferring to hang around in the safe nest of academia rather than enter the Rust Belt workforce during the Great Recession - you can't beat graduate housing and a reliable stipend in today's economy, unless you're very lucky. That passion Charlie had, that drive - regardless of any underlying psychological issues behind it - was what caught the eye of the Mekhet patron and "historian" of the Agonistes bloodline, Hector Nicholson. A respected Elder in Chicago, known to mortals as a wealthy and eccentric patron of the Field Museum and to vampires as someone who tends to know too much, Hector met Charlie while the latter was doing research on Eastern Mediterrranean history, specifically Hector's collection of artifacts and alleged personal experience in archaeology. Looking for lines of continuity between Egyptian, Greek, and Roman cultures, Charlie was surprised and, at first, ignored the old man's insistence that there was some kind of shadowy monster underworld there that continued to the present day, albeit in fractured form. Then Hector turned Charlie into a vampire, and Charlie began to get the idea. Vampire history, Hector explained, was effectively unknown. Vampires are amazingly crappy record-keepers, their memory is not to be trusted, and many vampires continue Roman ideals of wiping enemies out of history when they go into torpor or final death. This level of disrespect for history shocked Charlie almost as much as his newfound craving for the blood of the living. Hector claimed and Charlie believed (whether Hector meant it or not), that Charlie could help him reconstruct ancient vampire history and, with it, vampire identity. Charlie looked at his new form and saw the flaws - blood craving, a brain locked in fog and animal instinct, flammability - and immediately his directionless mind seized on a goal of improving himself and the crazy dead men he shared unlife with. With his sire's approval and sponsorship, he was initiated into the Ordo Dracul and the Agonistes bloodline, head full of ideas of the Good of Vampirekind. Then, of course, Charlie met other vampires, and decided he cared more about The True History than dealing with arrogant bloodsucking predators. A bookish academic, he still somehow feels more comfortable with the (nocturnal) mortal university set than predatory night creatures, even if he usually contacts his professors and research associates by email now, pleading a serious blood condition and attendant hospital stays. His actual studies of history have languished in favor of his attempts to piece together some tiny piece of vampire history from obscure artwork and the ravings of madmen, but as a graduate student, he is perfectly capable of putting in the bare minimum of effort. He has largely ignored his family (parents Damian and Amanda, younger sister (17) Vera) for the last six months, and they largely have not noticed, being more focused on his much younger sister. Charlie figures he won't be in trouble unless he spends another couple of years in a doctorate program, or Vera decides to go to college at UC. And what are the odds of that happening, right? At the moment, Charlie is inhabiting an apartment near the University in a district low-rent enough that he can board up the windows and no one will care. His usual feeding habit is to find somewhere between home and the University library with a lone human, sneak up on them, and take a sip or four. He has not yet killed a mortal through violence or overfeeding, and is still trying to keep it that way. While he prefers to spend his nights locked up with books and records, his sire and his seniors in the Order have come to the conclusion that he needs to get out and socialize more, lest his Beast overtake him from sheer isolation or sheer number of Predator's Taint checks when he does interact with vampire society at large. Thus, he gets sent to answer the Prince's request, on the basis of making him part of Kindred society and because historical knowledge of the Covenants will likely be useful. Sire: Hector Nicholson, Agonistes Mekhet historian Grandsire: Isabella Nance, Primogen of Ordo Dracul. Ex(?)-lover of Hector. Not originally from America.
