Background: "I regret to inform you sir, but your services are no longer needed as of today. Thank you." "How dare you try to tell me how to run my kingdom!! Leave at once and never show me your face again!!" "I am sorry my lord, but we cannot afford to keep you anymore. The war is lost, and it is a shame to see one such as young as you die for someone else's land. Farewell my lord, and live long." Flashes. Scenes from the past. Faster and Faster. The young man wakes up and finds himself in a not too cozy room. The curtains are tattered, letting in the rays of sunlight as if mockingly right at his face. He rolls to his side and pushes himself up, and sits at the side of the bed. He sits there for a while, thinking about his dream. Or was it a nightmare. Those dreams again. He stands up and sluggishly walks around the room, collecting his gear half awake. The dream he just had were in fact memories. Memories of the myriad times he has worked for kings, rulers, warlords, and other powerful men. Yet, with his luck, he couldn't last even a year in service. Hailing from a clan that did this kind of work for centuries, and a prestigious one in that regards, the young man is just about as bad as they could come. Not that he was bad at what he does though. In fact, he is widely regarded as a prodigy in their arts, earning his right to be a clan warrior at the tender age of 14. It's just that he just can't seem to catch a break. Almost every king or ruler he has entered service into were either tyrants or were too small and taken over by other countries or just plain too poor to keep him. And the pressure is building for one such as himself, whom everyone has high hopes on. His father had been in service to the wizards kings of Hundras, a hero and irreplaceable general of its vast armies. His father's father had spent his entire life under the Warlord Duvall, conquering kingdoms and subduing barbarians to the south, a legend as well. And yet here he is, stuck in a downtrodden, sorry excuse of an inn, with not even a place for taking a bath. He could clearly hear his father's words before they parted: "You, my boy, shall become a stuff of legend. Bards shall sing of your heroic tales and children shall speak of you with awe and amazement. Go forth and make this old man proud." With a beverage as bitter as what he is feeling, he downs his food and leaves. As he steps out of the door, he gazes into the direction of the morning sun, at the silhouette of the tall, imposing figure near the horizon. His destination. He had heard of this derelict castle from when he was wandering aimlessly for his next employer. A remnant of an old kingdom, taken by more rulers than it had seen years, and in recent years, rumors had been spreading about it being taken over by creatures of the dark. While it did seem to do him no use, an idea struck him: If I can't find myself a lord to serve under, then I shall make my own kingdom and run it myself! The young man steps into the road in the direction of the east. It shall not be long now. That castle will be mine.
