Description
Harlen Quan is a short but very fit young man with straight black hair, dark brown eyes, and a round placid face. Most of the time he wears clean clothing, a white apron, and a hairnet. When action calls, he wears leather armor colored deep red and a very determined, even frightening, expression.
Personality
Harlen Quan grew up hearing stories of his revered ancestors and the sometimes wonderful, sometimes terrible, but always honorable, deeds they accomplished. As a result, he has an overdeveloped sense of honor. Because of his rogue training, he does not always choose the orthodox way to address insults or exact vengeance. His elders counsel him to practice patience, but Harlen is not always willing to wait. He especially hates kidnappers, murderers, and food critics.

History: Once upon a time in a land far far away, an evil noblewoman sent her favorite assassin to kill a fellow noble for spurning her advances. The assassin crept into her target's bedroom one dark night and raised her sword to slay him. At that moment the clouds parted and moonlight spilled into the room. The assassin gasped as she saw how handsome her target was and she fell instantly in love. So instead of killing him as her mistress desired, she woke him and explained the situation. The nobleman was a sorcerer and woke with a lethal spell on his lips, but the sight of his assassin's lovely face stopped his spell and nearly his heart. He listened carefully to all she said and asked what his enemy would do to her for failing. She could not answer, and that was all the answer he needed. The nobleman stood up and screamed loudly enough to wake the entire household. Then he cast fire, setting his own bedroom aflame. The handsome nobleman took the beautiful assassin's hand and together they vanished. No one ever saw them again. Over 150 years ago, a weary young man and woman arrived in Adrilanka. They worked as adventurers for a few years in order to raise capital, then they got married and settled down to raise a family. Because they missed the foods of their homeland, they went into the restaurant business. Today, Kwan's Fine Dining has branches both in Adrilanka and in the capital city. The youngest generation of Kwans do not look much like their revered ancestors anymore. Most of them no longer even speak the language of their lost homeland. Some Kwans, however, inherit one or another of the family gifts. They are taught how to use their talents in honor of the family founders. Harlen Quan was one such young man, trained in the rudiments of stealth and assassination, but he spent most of his time in the Adrilankan branch of Kwan's Fine Dining as Fifth Trainee Chef, using his knife to chop up nothing more than noodles and vegetables. Then one day he heard a scream from the main dining area. Some armed thugs had come in, killed or wounded the security guards, and kidnapped Lord Mirkala! Harlen was outraged. Not only did the thugs kill a Kwan employee, they had kidnapped a customer! It was an insult to the Kwan name! It was not to be borne. Harlen rushed out with only his kitchen knife and followed the trail of the kidnappers. He had to run for miles, asking directions from passersby, before he discerned that the carriage could only be going to a certain suburban estate. More careful inquiry led him to understand that the estate belonged to Lord Arsala, an enemy of Lord Mirkala. Harlan returned to Kwan's Fine Dining and revealed what he had discovered. The Kwans concocted a plan. Later that same night, Harlen and his cousin Eleree brought hot stew and fresh bread to the Arsala estate guardhouse. Harlen explained that the food was a gift from Lord Arsala for, he said, a "job well done". To show that the food was all right, Harlen ate some of it. Despite his assurances, the entire guard went rushing to the latrine a little while later. The Kwans had dosed the stew with a powerful laxative. Harlen was fine from eating it because he had taken a powerful counter-agent beforehand to give himself constipation. He pretended to be distraught over the reaction, then he and Eleree exited, and Eleree drove the wagon off the estate. Harlen did not leave. While the guards were distracted by their intestines, Harlen stole studded leather armor and a short sword and crept through the manor like a ghost. He ambushed first one servant, then another, demanding information and threatening to carve out their eyes with his knife. Thus he learned Lord Mirkala was held in a room guarded by two men, awaiting Lord Arsala's pleasure. Harlen knocked each servant out with his sap and left them bound and gagged in various closets. Harlen knew the two guards would be wary and suspicious, so he copied the deeds of his ancestors and set a curtain in a nearby room on fire. He left the door open so that the guards would smell the smoke. One guard came over to investigate, and Harlen stepped out from behind the door and stabbed him in the back, killing him instantly. Then the other guard came over. Harlen did not surprise this guard, but in the ensuing battle Harlen was lucky and won. Then he opened the door with a key found on one of the bodies and escorted the very surprised Lord Mirkala out into the night where Eleree waited with the wagon. Harlen still works in Kwan's Fine Dining as Fourth Trainee Chef (he was promoted). From time to time, however, someone comes to him with a mystery or a problem that needs solving. If Harlen sees fit and the task honors his ancestors, he accepts responsibility and chops through the obstacles in his way.
