Description
Eric is tall for an elf, resting comfortably at the top of the range for elven height. He has black hair that hangs down, unrestrained, to his shoulders and is almost always in his face and slate grey intelligent eyes. He is strong but graceful. He has a very slight limp in his right leg that seems more from habit than actual pain. He carries a large sword on his hip and wears leather armor studded with fire-darkened metal.
Personality
Above all, Eric considers himself broken. He fears that he'll learn that he has no value, so he protects himself by trying to convince himself of the fact beforehand. He hates to be praised because it could build his confidence enough to be shattered, yet he yearns for praise which scares him, so he hopes that he isn't. He fears trancing because he knows that he could easily encounter new dream and that it could make him lose his sanity all over again. Eric has built his life around his sword, the thing which he remembers being taught the most. Every night he will disassemble it, oil all of the parts, reassemble it and then sharpen it; if he has the time and energy. To say that he cares for his sword is not to say he reveres it. He will use his sword any time it is useful. His sword is important to him, not only as a weapon and a tool, but also as a deterrent. Many bandits and such will not attack someone who has a sword, especially if he has the strength and grace that Eric possesses. Eric tries not to let his insecurities show to anyone. He knows that people would use them against him. He laughs and jokes as appropriate to the situation in order to hide his true nature. He boasts and acts arrogant, though all in good humor. He expects people to laugh at his antics and is surprised when they believe him.

The mind has four ways of protecting itself, four doors through which it passes in order to escape pain. First is the door of sleep. Sleep can dull the edges of harmful memories or . The door of ignoring is a lot like forgetting, but the memories are still there. They're just buried. When neither sleep nor ignoring will suffice, the mind goes through the third door, insanity. There are some trauma's though that can't be slept through, ignored, or retreated from. When these pains present, the mind escapes through the fourth door, death, the ultimate escape. Eric knows all about the doors of the mind. He has experienced three and seriously considered the fourth. His story is not a happy one. Craserikiel was born average. His parents on the other hand were exceptional. His parents, the lady Antimony and the knight Saleveer, were members of the Oakheart Rangers, an extremist group known for slaughtering any who abused the forests that they controlled. He grew up in the midst of warriors who were fighting for a cause. He was trained from an early age to fight for what he believed and never take insolence or disrespect lying down. He was taught to use a blade. He was taught how to speak the languages of the sword, the resonant tongues of the deep and the hard words of the fiery languages. He was taught to interpret and control his emotions, to think before he acted. Then, when he was about thirty-five, it was all gone. A royal war-party swept through the camp, killing all the men and most of the women. Eric didn't know where the war-party came from or who the royals were, but they only left the noncombatants alive. Eric tried to fight, but was hit on the head almost immediately by a horseman. He lost consciousness instantly. Somehow his unconscious body got tangled with the tackle of the mount of the horseman, who was killed almost immediately after he hit Eric. Eric was then dragged from the camp into the forest surrounding the camp. As he was dragged the horse stepped on his right leg several times, mangling it. His left foot also caught on a tree root and the resulting yank on his leg dislocated his ankle, knee and hip... it was not a good day for his legs. But in his unconscious state he didn't feel the full brunt of the pain. His comatose state had another advantage, it gave his mind the time it needed to shunt the memories of Eric watching his parents getting cut down through the second door. It passed those memories through the door first, but then it continued to pass memories through the second door. It buried the painful memories of his family. For a normal elf this wouldn't be so consequential. They go to school, have training and are apprenticed by that age, but not Eric. Almost every memory that Eric had had his parents in it, teaching him, guiding him, protecting him. In protecting itself, his mind robbed Eric of his very identity. Eric still retained his knowledge, but he had no context to which he could put that knowledge. By the time Eric awoke nearly four days later, nearly the entirety of his memory had been suppressed. He had been found by a middle-aged human who had re-placed Eric's hip, knee and ankle while Eric was still unconscious. The man loved to talk and started to chatter constantly as Eric woke up. The man magically rearranged the bone shards spread through Eric's right leg only after Eric had woken up. As the man chattered and worked, Eric listened to keep his mind off the pain so he wouldn't fall asleep. The man man always stopped to treat his leg when he fell asleep. He learned a lot about the man while listen to him prattle. He learned that the man's name was Gaheris, that he was invited to be member of the elven court, a nearly unheard of honor, that the man used to be a guard at a temple of Pelor and that the man loved to live alone, but missed his daughter. Eric spent nearly eight years Gaheris, spending seven of them having his leg treated by some magical object that the man used. It took that long because Gaheris had to make sure that the demon inside it didn't infect either of them with it's evil. By the time the treatments were done, Eric had full control and full range of motion with his leg by the end. He then spent the next ten months doing small manual tasks, building strength in his leg. After that, Gaheris decided that he would take Eric to an elven city. Eric agreed, though there were tears at the parting. Gaheris arranged for Eric to be apprenticed to a scribe. Maers, the scribe, was not impressed with Eric's grasp of language and showed it by beating him whenever he made a mistake. The problem was that he also had some knowledge of healing magic, so he would beat Eric senseless and then heal him so that there wasn't so much as a bruise, so Eric could prove it to no one. It wouldn't have mattered anyway, Eric didn't know who to tell. That was when he started to remember his dreams. Ever since he was found by Gaheris he had woken up in the middle of his trance from an unknown dream, but now he was remembering them. In his dreams he saw a woman teaching him how to write in the fluid script of the elves, and he saw a man training him how to hold a sword. He saw a woman cutting up a dinner and stopping to look up at him and smile, and he remembered south. He didn't know why he remembered south or what it meant, but he started to have a vague sense of the direction of south. He knew something from his past was south, but he didn't know what. He started looking south when he wasn't training. Then he started getting distracted by what was in the south during training. People started calling him Souther. During this time of Eric's life he went a little crazy. He his thoughts started escaping his control and flying in several directions at once. He could usually hide it from Maers, but the concentration it took exhausted him. He tried trancing more, but it actually made it worse. Sometimes, when he would just relax and let his thoughts go, they would affect him emotionally. He would be studying, memorizing a court hearing or gaining a detailed knowledge of a rue buck's life, and he would just start laughing hysterically, or he'd break down crying. He finally realized that it was the dreams that were making him like this when he would start getting flashbacks to them when he would let his thoughts scatter. He started using the time when he could concentrate to think through them and come to grips with a past that he couldn't remember. He began seeking out books on psychology and found some that detailed treatments for similar symptoms. Naturally, since he was using his concentration on curing himself, he couldn't when he was with Maers. He began receiving beatings more and more often. It was lucky for Eric that within a few months of pursuing it, Eric had practically cured himself. It took Eric fifty-seven years to finally escape Maers by finally being pronounced acceptably literate by the scribe. Eric didn't so much as consider continuing as a scribe. He immediately started looking for the one that he wished to train under, the weapons-master. He found one, but he had to search two cities before he found her. Mallick, the weapons-master, was a battle-scarred veteran who ran the local guard training grounds. She accepted Eric as a pupil after he demonstrated the bare necessities needed to be a great swordsman. Eric already knew the basics so it only took him twenty years or so to learn enough to handle himself in a fight. From Mallik he set off as an adventurer. He always wanted to go south, but the stars never aligned for it. Until a bare three years and several adventures after he had set off, he finally found an expedition which was heading that way. He signed on with them before he even checked why the were going south or what they were going to do there. He was rather surprised to find out where they were going.
