Description
Rilla is 5'1", slender, fine-boned, and delicate, with pale golden skin. She has slanted, tawny golden eyes with a slight epicanthic fold under winged brows. Her face is broad at the brow, with high cheekbones, full, reddened lips, and a somewhat stubborn chin. Her hair is black, straight, and shining, and worn in a complicated knot at the nape of her neck, covering her somewhat pointed ears. She moves gracefully, with rather studied gestures of her long, elegant fingers. In town, she favors flowing gowns in soft fabrics of ivory, peach, or turquoise for formal occasions, and simple robes in subdued colors when researching or relaxing. On the road or in the woods she wears sturdier, more practical clothes, a divided skirt of dark brown wool, a cream-colored shirt, and a figure-skimming embroidered vest, with soft boots and a cream-colored hooded cloak and backpack. Around her waist is a belt with several pouches and a sheathed dagger hanging from it. She carries a crossbow at need. She is fastidiously clean and neat, with well-tended hands and soft skin which she protects from the elements with scented creams. She uses cosmetics to enhance her appearance, even while journeying though the wilderness. Her voice is quiet and low, and she is more inclined to listen than speak.
Personality
Rilla is rather conflicted in many aspects of her life. She was trained to be very feminine; she enjoys looking elegant and serene, smelling fragrant. However, although she loves her mother, she has no desire to follow in her footsteps. She enjoys music, dancing, theatre, and art, but has no desire to follow the bardic profession as a career, as she feels that performers are at the mercy of too many people, just as her mother was. Mages have power; people come to them. Money gives power; she wants it. But she is not cold or cruel; she wants comradeship but does not really trust love. Sexually, she is aloof and choosy, liking being sought more than surrendering and wanting to maintain the upper hand. She worships Azuth, rather than Mystra, being more interested in the application of magic than in its mystical nature. Rilla’s goal in life is power and influence. She wishes to gain the ability to be spoken of with admiration for something other than appearance. Her model, in many ways, is Vangerdahast of Cormyr, a figure almost of legend when she was growing up, though her magical interests have a far different focus from his.

Rilla's mother Jasmine was trained as a bard and concubine. At the age of eleven, she was sent as tribute from the land of Shou Lung in far-off Kara-Tur to the Horde, part of a payoff to prevent her lord's lands from being overrun. She was passed westward, sent as an exotic gift from one ranking warlord to another. About 25 years ago, when her current owner tired of her, she was sold to a pirate from the Dragon Coast. She accompanied her owner aboard ship. The pirates attacked a merchant ship which carried a party of adventurers as passengers, whose combined magic and archery destroyed the raiders. The slaves serving the pirates were not harmed, but were taken aboard and set off at the next port, which was Teziir. Jasmine, who was quite lovely, had only one real career open to her, and she did well, eventually becoming the mistress of a gold elf merchant (married) with exotic tastes in women. (And a secret life of sorts with smuggling contacts throughout the Sword Coast – a life he led in his mistress’ house so it wouldn’t touch his family.) He set her up in a house in Teziir. Rilla was born a couple of years later. As her mother aged, her father's visits to her grew less frequent and finally ceased, as he found other smuggling contacts. Jasmine, though, was an intelligent woman, and had saved enough money and jewels to retire on, as her bard skills were not great enough to enable her to make a good living. Rilla did not want to follow her mother's profession, but wanted more independence and power, especially over men. When Rilla was seventeen, her mother visited her father and asked him to arrange for her to be apprenticed to a mage. In return, she offered to move far away, so that neither she nor Rilla would be an embarrassment to the merchant and his legitimate family. He agreed, and arranged for Rilla to be apprenticed to a half-elf mage, whose name was Aglandor, in Scornubel. Her mother settled in a small town nearby, and lives quietly, with a small circle of friends. Her master was elderly, rather cold, but skillful. Rilla enjoyed the learning of magic and delighted both in her own skills and in learning how to manipulate her teacher as well. Aglandor was not an enchanter, but a diviner, very much interested in the nature of magic. He was dry as dust, not really interested in Rilla’s budding charms, so she actually had to work and study to impress him, not just bat her eyelashes. This ended up making her respect him, though he was a cold man and certainly not a friendly one. He tried teaching her all his schools, but Rilla was much more interested in subtle spells than the direct use of force -- so unfeminine, and divination was useful but limiting to one of her assets and previous training. He was a theoretician by inclination, close to a sage of magic. Not really the best teacher for her, but away from Teziir, which is what mattered to her father, who knew him through a distant connection best not inquired into.
