Born in to a middle class American family in the mid-1920s, baby Helena briefly enjoyed the luxurious lifestyle of the roaring 20's before the stock market crash forced her family into near poverty. Helena hated work and school, missing the days when she was free to play and laze as she chose. What little Helena can remember before her time over the hedge is dull, gloomy, monotonous, and tiring. Her only fond memory is of a Jazz dance club her parents went to in celebration of their tenth year anniversary. Even as a child, Helena was a beautiful dancer -- her parents said she may be to wild even for swing dancing. When Helena was ten, a man with yellow eyes approached her. He said she was a talented dancer, and he could give her an audience that would truly appreciate her talents. He promised her a magical world, wholly unlike her own, a place where fairy tales come from. Helena believed every word he said (because at this time fairy tales were still magical, and always had a happy ending for the princess). She followed him through the hedge. Helena's life among the Fae was no better than her life in the 1930s. Every day she danced for the Fae, the same dances over and over. Occasionally the Fae would hold a competition, each lord testing his dancer against the others. Helena doesn't know what happens to the losers of these competitions, but they have never been seen again. Helena doesn't really care; she has never lost, and she will never lose, because she is the best. Helena made the decision to leave the Fae when she met a girl who had been taken from the 2000s. The girl spoke of the wondrous technologies that had been made of r making life easy, and all the fun activities girls and women were free to do. Women had power in the world. Helena left to escape the dull monotony of her current life. Helena first went through the hedge ate the age of 10. Helena exited the Hedge into 1994. Biologically, Helena had aged a couple years, emotionally, there was little change. Having no home to go to, Helena learned to live on the street, with other street children her age. She learned how to pick pockets, shoplift, and pick locks from other teens. AN older boy hotwired a car for her, and taught her how to drive. She has become adept a finding places to sleep that will not be rained on, searched by police, or assaulted by violent hobos. (Adult Helena feels sorry for other street children and hobos who don't have jobs or stable places to live; Helena donates blankets, bandages and money to food shelters when she can). Helena is useless in a fight. She understands the basics of knife fighting, but has no skill at it, and she can't fire a gun straight to save her life. She has only ever successfully fought in moments of desperation. She's okay with touching blood, but hates blood splatter and hates in getting on herself or her clothes. (Helena's concern arises from vanity and not health concerns; it's difficult to shoplift nice clothes from fashionable stores, and she doesn't want to ruin them).Because she is useless in a gang fight, she was allocated the task of bandaging cuts and bullet holes instead. Helena had only a basic education when she was taken; she can read (not strongly), and do basic math (addition, multiplication, simple division, etc.) She normally doesn't enjoy reading, but likes teen-romance novels because the language is simple and she likes the cheesiness. She is disappointed the vampires she has met are not like the vampires in romance novels (no matter how much martin's character insists he is). Helena is happiest surrounded by other people experiencing positive emotions. She loves clubs, bars, and hipster coffee shops. She’s a big fan of social media, and can't live without tumblr and readit. She is also a fan of alcohol, and other drugs that humans find addictive and euphoric; it's a miracle she is not yet addicted to heroin. She doesn't like how negative emotions "taste". She will have panic attacks if totally isolated. Helena has a superiority complex, believing that her exceptional dancing skills make her an exceptional person (She will never admit this aloud). Helena frequents popular clubs, and awes and seduces people with her exceptional dancing. She enjoys picking up drunks from bars and clubs, believing she's doing them a favour by letting them score with her. Helena understands the risk of excessive stress with strangers, but believes that since she hasn't caught an STD yet, it will probably never happen. For the first time in her life she is beginning to question her ultimate value, as her new vampire "friends" seem to be more impressive than her.
