Description
Roy tends to stick to one outfit no matter what the situation is. This consists of a black uniform with copper buttons, long sleeves, and pants that are partially covered by his brown boots. He keeps his brown gloves and a coat on in all but the hottest weather, which is of a darker black and brown than his clothes underneath. Depending on his mood he either keeps his arms in the coat's sleeves or out, the coat remaining secured either way by the ties near its collar. It tends to fall over his sword, which he keeps sheathed at his left side. The metal buckler on his left arm is more often visible. His black hair is lighter, to the point of nearly being gray, in comparison to his clothing colors. His right eye is covered by an eyepatch. His left can still be seen in spite of his long bangs, which reveals it being light brown in shade. Usually it does not give away any trace of his emotions, nor does his mouth, which remains in a neutral line.
Personality
Amongst people Roy does not know, he prefers to keep to himself. He is too used to people being motivated solely by self interest and thus finds it hard to trust without good reason. This is not helped by the fact that Roy focuses only on what will benefit himself as well. Since that is his mode of thought, he assumes others think the same. Due to a lack of self-respect for what he does, Roy thinks lowly of people like him. In contrast, he has much respect for people that prove to act selflessly and can warm up to them quickly. These types of companions are a different type of motivation for him. While he is still technically acting on what makes him happiest, Roy has more pride in his actions when it is for the purpose of another individual. In particular, Roy is extremely close to Mari. He views protecting her as his top priority. On the surface, he prefers to think of it as a way of redeeming his particularly bloody life style until this point. Concealed inside himself is the worry that keeping her safe is merely another way to indulge himself. Not only does it let him continue fighting, he can do so for what could be labeled as a good cause. But he wishes to think of it as a good cause for the sake of being good and caring for Mari, while in truth Roy fears it is solely for himself. When in combat, there is no holding back for Roy. He aims for lethal blows in nearly any circumstance, not believing in second chances for the black-hearted people he usually fights. Should he be fighting with someone he cares about, Roy will try to get the attention of the enemies so they aim their attacks toward him. He does not fear pain or wounds, though the thought of dying is a frightening one. It takes a special type of bond for Roy to risk being killed for someone else. At the same time, he is not one to back out of a fight and will not flee from an already initiated combat unless he is alone or with a group that agrees to that strategy.

Roy was born in the city of Creisen, which had a clear division between the poor and the wealthy. While there were also people of the middle class, it was the nobles who had the say of the city. Roy's mother was one of these nobles, with his father having been from one of the lowest neighborhoods. This relationship first occurred from Roy's mother seeking a way to rebel against her parents, and evolved from true love for the man. When his mother became pregnant, her parents quickly discovered who she had been seeing. They pulled a few strings to have him be captured and killed him in front of his mother. The horrified mother was then told her baby would have the same fate due to his father's rank. She secretly hired a mercenary to take Roy away after he was born, before her parents could have him killed as well. The only thing she had time to give her son was his name, with his last name coming from his father. The mercenary dropped Roy off at an orphanage in another town, which is where he lived for the first ten years of his life. The conditions were not awful, but there was much left to be desired. Most children were not adopted, and the large amount of them led to there being food shortages and lack of affection, as one woman was the only person to look after them all. Roy had a far more serious personality than most of the other children, which was the main reason he did not make any friends. He was never bullied or anything of that sort. He just seemed unapproachable, though it was not his intention. As such, there was no hesitation in his mind when an elf came by and asked to adopt him. This elf, Cale, explained that he thought Roy had the potential to learn the magical techniques he wished to pass on. Though Roy learned how to use a sword and magic originated from the elves, it was something that took him several years. Even so, Cale commended him on what he considered quick progress. Elves usually took longer to learn it, which normally was not an issue for their lifespans. He explained this and added that for a human, Roy was doing very well. Roy never inquired on why Cale adopted him or wanted him to learn of these techniques. He was content with his new life and did not want to jeopardize it with questions. Roy was twenty when his life took another dramatic turn. A drow attacked the pair that Cale apparently knew, but had never spoken of before. The drow, Solrar, managed to get a fatal blow on Cale while demanding 'the scroll'. Roy attacked from the back, but Solrar was far more experienced in combat. Roy wound up losing his right eye from the counterattack. His attempt was not in vain, for it gave Cale enough of an opportunity to get a severe blow on the drow. Solrar fled before Cale could kill him. In his last moments, Cale gave Roy a sealed scroll, telling him to keep it safe and to never open it. He managed to hang on long enough to say that he had a wife and daughter in the city of Creisen (which Roy did not recognize as his place of birth) and begged Roy to find and protect them. He had left his daughter and her mother to 'keep them safe', but with his death, he feared they would be vulnerable. After burying his mentor, Roy went straight to Creisen to search for Cale's family. Cale had told him his family lived in the lower quarters, and the sight of them was appalling to even Roy. That first evening, he saw two men trying to attack a young woman. He stepped in to kill both. Though the girl was appalled at the slaughter, she was still grateful to Roy for saving her. It was only in the following conversation that he noticed similarities to Cale in her face, and that she was a half-elf. When he mentioned Cale's name, he learned she was his daughter, Mari. She was saddened to hear of her father's death, though she said she had not seen him for a long time. Her mother had died a few years ago, and since then, she had lived at a nearby church of Pelor. For the next two years, Roy stayed with Mari to act as a guard. It was a year and a few months after they first met that Solrar attempted to make Mari a target, but Roy was able to fight him off successfully. His hope had been to kill Solrar and end the threat for good, only for him to get away again. He did not see Solrar after that, but was sure he would return. Due to that, he suggested moving to a different location for the time being. Mari came up with an idea: Owen's Port was a town some distance away that she heard had a decently sized temple for Pelor clerics. She asked that they go there. They made the trip to Owen's Port without difficulty. Mari went to visit the temple while Roy looked for an inn they could stay at. When she did not return, he went to ask the clerics if she had arrived. They confirmed that yes, Mari had come by, but that an emergency had come up. Mari had gone with a few other clerics in hopes of helping. None of them were back yet, but probably would be later, he was assured. The small group did not return. After a week went by, the clerics gave up hope on their comrades. Roy was not about to do the same. He heard rumors of people vanishing from caravans, and drew a conclusion that with those instances being the only problems in the area, it was likely what Mari had gone to check on. With no better leads, he decided to take up the offer on investigating the trade caravans. Even if it could mean losing his life, he is willing to do so for the slightest chance of finding Mari. - Cale: An elf that was Roy's mentor for ten years.
