Personality Traits
Outgoing, cheerful, and optimistic, Kian loves life and all the potential it holds for him. He has no doubt that amazing adventures await him and is determined to grab them with his own hands. Though he has come across several difficulties and is hated by many for simply being a tiefling, he had never given up on his ideals. There are, to him, many people with good hearts that are worth finding, befriending, and protecting. Even if there are also a lot of people with dark intentions, Kian believes those with good ones outweigh the bad. Meeting new people is something Kian looks forward to. He always has a hope that each person he speaks with will be one who can look past his race and be a potential friend. Even though this has rarely happened, he keeps at it with only a few occasional moments of self-doubt. He has questioned his methods before, but always recovers swiftly and goes back to doing what he feels is right for him. When amongst others, he is loud and a frequent speaker, but not in an intentionally rude way. His ideas tend to be on the eccentric side, which can make him appear to be an idiot at some points. However, his instincts are well honed, and many of his oddities tend to work out for him. When in battle, Kian takes the front line whenever he can. He believes his most important job is protecting any allies who cannot take hits as well as he can. For comrades that also enjoy close combat, Kian does not concern himself unless they are in trouble. He figures they are used to taking a few blows like he is. If on his own, Kian keeps his focus on being a constant attacker. Even if losing, he never backs down if fighting someone who he views as a threatening or evil person. Against those who he feels are good but misunderstanding him, he prefers to either knock them out or simply tries escaping when possible.
Mannerisms and Appearance
In most cases, Kian stands out more than most would consider healthy. He never bothers with a shirt, leaving his well-muscled upper body for everyone to see. His black pants and shoes are partially concealed by a long, flowing cloth of multiple colors that range from purple to a matching black. Accompanying these are copper guards around his lower arms, lower legs, and waist. A metal neck piece looks to be a part of the set, though it would not protect him from many attacks. His fire-red hair cascades down his bare back and appears surprisingly well-cared for. At the top of his head are two black horns, and a black tail comes from below the cloth he wears at his waist. His face appears youthful, which is often helped by the wide grin he has, even if it also has the side effect of revealing his sharp teeth. His red eyes give him a threatening appearance at a first look. Those who observe him for a while will find his demeanor is rarely threatening though. He has a carefree air that takes away from his menacing qualities.
Session and Campaign Notes
Companions and Allies
Mikel: An old tiefling who taught Kian the Stone Fist style. He has hopes that Kian will bring a good name to their race. One tiefling would not instantly make them all accepted, but he thinks it could lead the movement. Though elderly, he keeps in good shape and still has a sharp mind. Salene: A human woman that is about the same age as Kian, though a bit older. She chases after Kian to arrest him and stop his crimes for good. As she has witnessed more of what he has done, she has started to have doubts on how dire his crimes are. Even so, she is, at least for the moment, convinced he must serve the sentence the law dictates. How her opinion changes will depend on the actions Kian takes.
Background & Other Notes
In an area where monstrous races were often hated and feared, tieflings of these locations have not done well for themselves. Most tieflings pick one of two lifestyles. One is that they use the reputation their race has gathered to threaten and attack and raid civilizations. This is not as common, and those that try usually die to the well-trained soldiers that are called to stop them. The other option they tend to take is living in secluded villages. Sometimes different races that are also unwelcome in the outside world are allowed to live with them. In most cases, however, the tieflings stick with their own kind. Kian was born in one of these small villages, one called Wood's Haven. His father had great expectations of his son taking up his mantle. As the mayor of the village, he wanted Kian to be studious, calm, and wise. He had full expectations Kian would become mayor in his place, and Kian's mother was in full agreement with her husband. Both of his parents, along with most of the villagers, adhered to the policy that their quiet life was for the best. They would much rather remain in hiding than have to deal with the world that despised them. Unfortunately for his parents, Kian was not their ideal child in the slightest. He grew up with an overpowering desire to see more of the world. Wood's Haven bored him to tears (literally in some cases as a younger child) and he wanted nothing more than to go on an adventure. The stories he heard from one of the oldest tieflings, Mikel, an adventurer who had previously traveled to many locations in the world, fueled his interest even more. Perhaps his wishes would not have been as strong if he had friends to play and interact with. However, he was one of the only children his age. Children were rare in Wood's Haven and most were born a few years after him, making them too young for him to be interested in. The arguments he would have with his parents became a standard affair. Kian would say their lives were being wasted, their potential squashed by being stuck in one tiny place. There were so many people they could help with their talents, and so much they could learn for improving their own race. His parents scoffed at this optimistic outlook. He had no idea how much they would be despised, his parents said. Nothing good could come out of revealing themselves. As Kian grew older, his spiels got longer, and his parents got even more angry at him. When these debates escalated, Kian would often run to Mikel, who he felt was his only ally. The older tiefling understood Mikel's wanderlust and his desire to better the world. After giving it much thought, Mikel called Kian to him one day to speak with him on the matter. He said he would teach Kian a method of fighting that relied on the body and spirit. The Stone Fist style, he explained, was focused on aggressive attacks and swift movements. If Kian could learn it well enough, he would be able to protect himself and those who were in need. Mikel warned Kian that the art was only as good as the person using it; he must never abuse it and only kill when absolutely necessary. Kian eagerly agreed to his conditions and began training right away. Mikel's lessons went from age fifteen to the day he turned sixteen. There was only so much Kian could learn from repeating the moves his teacher showed him, and Mikel felt it best that Kian learn of the outside world. The news excited Kian greatly, with his only regret being having to leave Mikel. He promised to come back to visit at some point, but not until he had accomplished something 'great'. Kian left the night of his sixteenth birthday without telling anyone else, though he left a note on the kitchen table. When his father found it, he promptly threw a fit and declared, in a loud enough voice for most of the villagers to hear, that he was disowning his son. It was not something Kian had any way of learning, though it would be a nasty surprise if he were to return to Wood's Haven. Kian's travels went smoothly until he entered the first city he found. There he had several people give him a wide berth. It probably would have gotten worse naturally, but there was no chance for it to. Kian misread a situation in a back alley, where a guard was trying to make out with a girl that he hoped to move into a relationship with. The girl was protesting to it, but not out of a reluctance to exchange kisses. It was because he was on duty and she did not want to get caught. However, she did not vocalize these reasons, so all Kian could hear was the girl trying to stop the guard and failing. Kian responded by assaulting the guard. The guard and several other members he called chased after Kian until he fled the city. That was the first of many crimes Kian committed. None of them were ever meant to make the authorities angry at him. Sometimes they occurred from him not fully understanding something that was going on. As he saw more people and learned about their behaviors, it became more frequent for Kian to do something that had positive results for those he was trying to help. He still wound up breaking rules that he was not familiar with though. He knew he had made guards mad, but he was still surprised at the first wanted poster that went up for him, saying that his crimes were "too numerous to list". On the bright side, at least in his opinion, he was only worth a hundred gold to be brought in, and was requested alive. So he evidently had not done anything as severe as the posters of killers that often wound up covering his. It was shortly after the poster went up that one woman began to give Kian the first real pursuit he had to deal with. Salene was a member of the guards in a small town when she witnessed Kian stealing a necklace from a shop. In truth, he was taking it because he did not have enough money to buy it. He had seen a woman weeping to her children over how her necklace, a memento of her deceased husband, had been taken. He thought the only good thing to do would be to get it back for her, and recognized it in the shop. In truth, the store owner had bought it from the thief and had no idea it was illegally acquired. Kian had simply assumed the store owner was in on it and that there would be nothing wrong with stealing it back. The guard closest to the robbery was Salene. She tried to stop Kian, and they got into a brief scuffle. He escaped quickly after, only barely managing to drop the necklace off with the woman before bolting from the town. Salene was infuriated at him for escaping and making her look like a fool, as she put it. She told her superior she wanted to go after the criminal. He was displeased with her decision, but Salene left anyway, prepared to chase Kian wherever he went. The ensuing game of chase continued for the next few months. Kian began to find it fun to try and outwit his new pursuer, especially since he thought she was a strong fighter and a good test of his own strength. Salene did not know he saw it that way; she thought he was constantly mocking her during the short brawls they had. As time went on, she began to notice a few of his 'criminal actions' were not as dire as she feared. She outright saw him save a child who had been attacked by a dog in town, which was the closest she came to wondering if he was as bad a person as she had thought. In the end, she decided that it was an action he had taken with ulterior motives. That is how Kian's life has played out so far. He still hopes to find a way to help out others in need, and travels to do all he can for such people. - First and foremost, Kian wishes to help other people. This can be broken down into several minor purposes. One, Kian hopes to have tieflings as a whole represented well through his actions. They might not be hated as much as before if he does good deeds. Two, the reactions and gratitude he has gotten from a few of the people have been some of the best emotions Kian has ever felt. Three, he hopes to make Mikel, his mentor, proud of him with his deeds. Four, he wishes to bring information from the outside world to his secluded village and to perhaps coax them into moving into more populated regions. Five, Kian secretly loves the idea of becoming a legend like the ones Mikel has told him of. These are not the only reasons Kian has, but most of his other desires can be wrapped into one of those five categories. Kian has not had a chance to make friends, so even though he is capable of fighting and traveling on his own, he hopes to find a group he can bond with. A couple of encounters he has had with other people have gone well, but they were usually civilians rather than travelers. What Kian wants is to partner up with other adventurers. He has doubts about how well this would go, especially since anyone he allies with could find out about his wanted status and simply turn him over for the bounty he has. Even so, Kian likes to keep an optimistic outlook on the matter, telling himself that one day he will meet a group he can be a part of. Though he does not consider Salene a friend, Kian does have an interest in her. He feels she misunderstands him and would like to speak with her at some point. This is made difficult by how she tends to attack him on sight. It is a long-term goal of his to get her to accept him, but not one that he calls a high priority. Salene has a way of following him wherever he goes, so he believes they will eventually work out their problems. People in trouble, on the other hand, are on a timer and need his attention right away. Other goals and motivations will most likely come up as the game goes on. These are the most noticeable ones for Kian so far.
