Description
The usual outfit Jax wears is surprisingly formal for most Catfolk from his world. His light gray suit and pants are spotless, and on the rare occasions where he has to unbutton is suit, it reveals a black sleeveless shirt underneath. The black gloves he wears have small holes in the fingertips from his pointed nails, while his matching shoes show traces of dirt and dust from past trips he has taken. A dark gray cloak, nearly blue in shade, hangs from around his neck as a measure of protection to his nicer outfit. His black hair has two cat ears with the same color of fur coming from them, which are complimented by his tail that often flicks in place. While his face can be considered handsome to some, his red eyes are offsetting to others. He tries to make up for this with a charming smile, one that can swiftly turn into a feral grin when in battle.
Personality
Mischievous sums up Jax in one word. He takes great delight in pulling pranks, being vague in his wording, and simply messing with people. He likes to have a good laugh when people fall for any of his tricks. However, he has strict standards to his actions. Jax would never deliberately try to hurt a person he views as having a good soul. He might change their hair color, sneak away a piece of food, or distract them with magical sounds, but nothing more than that. His far nastier antics he saves for people he believes to be either utter jerks or black-hearted. In similar light, Jax dislikes fighting unless it is against such beings. Battle is never a favorite activity of his, but if someone crosses the line of his moral boundaries, he is not against exchanging attacks. He will also fight back to preserve himself. When on his own, he has no shame in fleeing a fight if he thinks he can get away. When with allies, he remains as long as they do. Jax has no trouble with making friends, or so he calls allies. He uses the term loosely and will show loyalty to them so long as they remain on his good side. He likes to address people by nicknames when at this stage of a relationship. Should a friend do something to cause his trust to rise significantly, he uses their real name as a sign of utmost respect from him. This is a system he does not explain to many people, so the meanings to these terms are usually lost expect to the most observant.

The plane Jax comes from is called Festorin. It has been consumed by hatred and war for as long as history books record to; any happier times have been lost to all except, perhaps, the oldest of elves. As far as Jax knows, the different races have been in conflict with each other for hundreds of years. Humans, dwarves, elves, halflings, gnomes, and more are all at odds with each other. They keep to their own kingdoms except when clashing in battle. Peace efforts were attempted by two previous groups of kings, only for different instances to ruin the potential treaty and continue the process. Jax was born in a small village in a forest bordering the human kingdom. His first ten years were peaceful and happy with his parents and the rest of the village residents. That changed when a group of humans came to capture and kill all of them. It seemed out of the blue for Jax, but he overheard some of the soldiers later discussing how the main city of Catfolks had attacked them recently. Evidently this was their idea of retribution. Whatever the case was, Jax and the few village residents who survived (all far older than him; he was the only child to survive, and his parents were amongst the dead) were sold off as slaves. It was shortly after this that Jax was bought by the noble house of Carrington to serve their son. Though only three years older than Jax, Nicholas Carrington-Nick for short-was far more sensitive about Jax's emotions than his parents ever were. It took a long time, but he managed to coax Jax into trusting him. Their friendship was sealed when Nick led him out of the house and helped him to escape. Jax was given a hat to disguise himself with through magic, and encouraged to leave before he would be discovered. Instead, Jax remained close by while appearing as a human. As Nick grew older, he hoped to have a significant say on the future of their world, which would include bringing friendship to the species. Jax stayed not only to be a friend to him, but also to take care of the shadier business that he felt was required for this to go through. For instance, a few groups wanted Nick to be silenced for his ideas. Jax rooted out these assassins to kill them before they could strike first. Darker tasks like this occupied him for most of his life. At the age of twenty, things came to a head during a diplomacy meeting that Nick went to for speaking with the elves. Jax followed from a distance, and this distance was what caused him to miss the supposed death of his sole friend. When he arrived, he saw the location was covered with bodies from both sides of the parties.Nick's was nowhere to be seen, but one of the few humans hanging on to life managed to choke out that he had seen Nick get stabbed in what he thought was a fatal blow. Jax accepted this as fact, even though he saw no proof to the contrary. He had feared for Nick dying for so long that his mind thought it must be true, despite the lack of a body. Under the belief that his world now was devoid of people worth staying for, Jax had the initial idea to live on his own in the forest until he passed away. This got lonely for him quickly though, as he thrived on being amongst humans. It was at a tavern that he heard of a planar Hub, one that accepted all sorts of different people. Perhaps they would be from worlds that were untainted; that was Jax's reasoning. So he set off to try and gain access to that location, having no regrets for leaving his home plane. The only sorrow he carried was Nick's death, something he was constantly reminded of by his memories, emotions, and the hat he still held on to. - "Jax!" Had Jax not been trying to hide, he would have been snickering at the bewildered look on the teenager below. He never tired of seeing Nick be baffled at his antics. Someone with sharper eyes than his friend might have noticed his twitching tail, but Nick remained blissfully unaware. "This really isn't funny!" Nick crossed his arms and glared at a dark portion of the underground room he was in. The shadows were not threatened by the gesture. He spoke to them anyway. "I know you're here. Come out already!" The only response Jax gave was putting one of his hands forward. He moved with silence to the edge of the box he was on. With the amount of crates here from storage of food, it was no problem for him to have found a place to conceal himself. It was a fun game, but he knew better than to continue it for too long. For a while, Nick would find it funny, even if he acted otherwise. Continue and he would start to worry that Jax really had not made it to their meeting spot. If one of them did not arrive at this location at the same time each week, odds were high that the other was either captured or dead. That was the unpleasant reality of their world. This was, happily for them, not a day for either to occur. Jax made this clear by leaping from the crate to slam into Nick. The youth's surprised yelp dissolved into laughter at the sight of Jax's triumphant smile. "You jerk!" He gave the catfolk a light shove, causing Jax to tumble off and to his feet in a single movement. Nick got up much less gracefully while adding, "One of these days I'm going to put enough torches here so you can't hide from me!" "As if that would help," Jax answered with a roll of his eyes. "It'd at least make it harder for you." The amusement on Nick's face faded as he continued to watch his companion. The look was not lost to Jax. "What is it? Did something happen?" "To me? No. But I heard a rumor." Great. Jax could guess where this was going. Even so, he remained silent, allowing Nick to continue. "Someone died this week. It's someone I normally wouldn't hear much of, but this assassin apparently had a note specifying me as his target." Nick fixed Jax with a solid stare. "He was burned to death. And there was a person outside when it happened. Someone who said that only one person exited that building. It was a person with a tail like a cat's." Jax gave him a disarming smile. "That sounds pretty convenient for you. One less killer to worry about, right?" "That's not my point and you know it!" With a shake of his head, Nick exclaimed, "Damn it, Jax! One of these days you're going to get killed if you keep doing this! These aren't fools you're dealing with! They'll track you down and slit your throat before you can blink!" The smile vanished from Jax's face as he responded. "Are you saying it's better that I let you die? Because that's not happening." Nick started to form a retort, but Jax stepped forward and clapped a hand over his mouth. "No. Let me say this." He kept his eyes locked to Nick's until Nick finally looked away. It was only after he was sure Nick would remain silent that he released his grip and continued. "There are precisely two people in this world I care about. One is, of course, myself. That's natural and nothing I am against admitting. What is far more significant is my concern for you. I don't think you fully understand how you saved me. I've seen what other slaves have gone through. Most of the ones I knew are now dead from the conditions they lived in. I too would be a corpse-whether it be one that moved or did not-if it hadn't been for you." Meeting his gaze again, Jax spoke with more conviction than he had in a long time. "I will not do anything reckless. So please, trust me. Trust me as you did back then, Nick." Rarely did Jax speak Nick's name, so as it tended to, it caught his attention. Nick observed him for a long moment before finally saying, "I won't be able to stop worrying. But I will trust you. That much I can do." This time, Jax's smile was far more sincere than his previous one. He reached up to clasp his friend's shoulder while saying, "That's good enough. Thanks." Then, as if the scene had gotten too sappy for his tastes, he quickly stepped back to where he had been. "Well, that was a nice way to get sidetracked. Shall we discuss what we came here to speak of?" The rest of their conversation went through the same facts that they usually shared. That did not change the fact that both of their minds were elsewhere, their concern for one another taking precedence over their mundane discussion. But neither would admit it.
