Description
A slender yet fit youth, Hans stands five and a half feet tall. His green long-sleeved shirt is mostly covered by a blue-gray jacket. His pants are a similar shade with his boots being dark brown. A purple bracelet on his right arm is the only sort of adornment he has. He carries a lance with practiced ease, even though it rivals his height with how long it is. His brown waist-length hair is tied back in a ponytail. Though his bangs are left alone, they do not interfere with his brown eyes, which usually reflect his friendly personality.
Personality
Hans tends to be nice to most people he meets, preferring to make friends rather than enemies. He suffers a bit when it comes to politeness and has a difficult time with formality. But he strives to be considerate unless wronged by the other person. He can handle insults to himself, though he does not like them. What he will not tolerate is anything that hurts his friends in any way. Hans is extremely loyal to the people that he cares for, which is one reason he prefers taking the front line. He would prefer to be the one risking injuries rather than anybody else with him.

Born in a small and secluded village, Hans only had interaction with his fellow town residents. His parents raised him lovingly and he was close to everyone else there. Since he was one of the only children of his age, Hans did not have any friends in the sense of playmates. He saw the residents more as a large extended family. His life was peaceful and unchanging until he turned fifteen. That was when he was asked by the mayor of the village to perform a task. Each year, a merchant caravan came to the village to trade materials that the citizens needed. Normally this caravan would hire a number of guards for protection. This year, there were more reports of bandit raids than usual, and the merchants had not found enough guards before leaving to make them feel truly safe. The area around the village had a reputation of being safe, but the mayor requested that Hans go with the merchants to make them feel more at ease. Hans agreed to the task eagerly. He had always been curious about the world outside the village, and this gave him a chance to see at least some of it. A few days of travel later, the caravan was attacked by one of the rumored groups of bandits. Having never fought before, Hans was barely able to do anything of use. All of the merchants were slaughtered along with the other guards. Hans received a severe wound and fell unconscious. The bandits had far more interest in looting as much as they could from the caravan, so they passed him over as dead. They most likely would have been correct if not for another traveler finding Hans still breathing. When Hans woke up three days later, he found that a human youth that was about his age had been caring for him. Hans, recognizing that his life had been saved by this person, asked to help him in some manner to return the favor. Initially he was met with hesitation, and Shaun, as he introduced himself, said that Hans should return to his home and not worry about it. Since it was on the way to where Shaun was traveling, they decided to go by there together. It was on the way there that an assailant attacked, specifically trying to knock out Hans' new companion. The two were able to kill the attacker. Hans confronted Shaun with this, saying that if he was in some sort of trouble, then he should have someone nearby to help. After some debating on the issue, Shaun finally agreed to having Hans come with him. They went by the village to tell Hans' parents of his decision before setting off again. For about three years, Hans and Shaun traveled together as close friends. They learned to trust each other and worked together well. Their travels focused more on keeping out of the sight of others, so they rarely got into fights. They also had to move constantly since Shaun was concerned about staying in one place for too long. Hans learned quickly that Shaun very much did not want to talk about why he was being pursued, so he dropped the issue and focused on helping out his companion. This ended a little longer than a month ago. In a town where they had to split up temporarily, Shaun was ambushed and taken away. Hans arrived in time to fight and kill one of the attackers, but the rest got away while he was busy. The only clue he had was what he managed to pry from the one he slew. Before that man died, he muttered that they needed "that boy" alive. This gave Hans hope that he could find Shaun and rescue him. Even though he had few clues, Hans set off to try and gather information from nearby towns. It was in one of those towns that Hans was confronted and told he was being arrested for murder. The only murder Hans could think of was if they meant the man he had killed that had helped abduct Shaun. He had no idea the charge was a fictitious one. Since Hans thought the guards might be associates of the group he was pursuing, he did not come quietly with them. But the guardsman outnumbered him and had more battle experience, so they were quick to subdue and drag him off to the prison.
