Description
Varen is a bit taller than the average human male and has kept his body fit over the years, despite being older than the average adventurer. He wears a dark pink coat over his black outfit, which consists of a long-sleeved button-up shirt and pants. Black gloves and black boots accompany his outfit, along with white cuffs that extend from his sleeves. His black hair has been tended to well, though his beard is more roughly shaven at his chin, making it easy to see. He wears an eyepatch over his left eye, but this is just for appearance. Should he remove it, it reveals that both of his blue eyes are intact and vivid in color.
Personality
On the surface, Varen is usually a friendly individual. He shows interest in what others say to him and at least responds politely. Sometimes he is enthusiastic about what many people would not even find a worthwhile remark on. For instance, getting a chance to use his compass is something he is something he acts proud of while others would wonder what the big deal is. Inside, Varen detests himself for taking Iria's life. His emotions and reactions are automatic from how he lived before her death. He tries to help people as a sort of repentance for himself, but is certain that no matter how many he saves, it will not make up for his one awful act. Sometimes he wishes that there would be someone he could trust, so that he might speak of what he has done. However, only Iria held that level of trust in him before. Whether he will find other people to put such faith in is something only time will tell.

Born in one of the many underground cities, Varen was destined for a life of thievery from the start. He was the only child of his parents. His existence was a mistake to them, as they did not want a son to split their meager funds with. They survived by stealing from citizens, for they had such little money that they could barely afford to feed themselves. None of their efforts went to teaching Varen how to do this, but he managed to observe their techniques several times. They were caught and executed by the time he was eight. It left him knowing only of stealing to keep himself alive. Varen managed to fend for himself until he was fifteen by being cautious and quick with his thievery. He made an oversight with one planned hit, resulting in him fleeing from the city before he could be arrested. On the surface for the first time without any possessions to call his own, Varen would have died from dehydration if not for being found by a small group of bandits. These young men survived by stealing water from caravans, usually through trickery and stealth instead of outright fighting. When they saw someone close to their own age collapsed in the sand, they were willing to help out. They warned Varen, once he woke up, that he would be expected to work off his debt for being saved. This was something he quickly agreed to, recognizing that if he helped them, he would have a way to live outside the city. Thus he became a member of the Sand Strikers, their name originating from how they emerged from the sand as if a part of the very desert. Though there were several people in the group, Varen's natural thievery skills got him a high position quickly. He was eighteen when the leader died fighting caravan guards. Varen became their replacement leader soon after. He held this position for the next ten years. He was responsible more for ensuring the operations ran smoothly and being a figurehead rather than any sort of combat. With his position came a new kind of loneliness. Originally, he had been happy to be part of a group after so many years of being on his own. As the leader now, and with so many men changing constantly due to death and recruitment, he had little chance to bond with anyone. A botched operation against a large caravan occurred when Varen was twenty-eight. He barely escaped with his life, while everyone else was slain. Though he had not been close to many of the men, he was at an utter loss of what to do without companions. Varen tried to recall how he had operated years ago on his own. He knew there was a city nearby that much of the water came from, and decided that to survive by himself once more, he should go back to stealing in such a place. His stay in the city was short. As rusty as he was at picking pockets and operating by himself, it was not surprising Varen was spotted trying to steal from a wealthy man mere days after arriving. The man had a twelve-year-old daughter with him, and in desperation to keep himself alive, Varen grabbed the girl and threatened to kill her if he called the guards. In truth, Varen never could have brought himself to kill the girl, but her father believed the bluff. He remained helpless at stopping Varen from taking the girl with him as a temporary hostage. Once safely away, Varen released the girl and told her to go back. What he did not realize was just who he had taken. The girl's name was Iria, and she belonged to the family of Silkos, a noble family that had much control over the water in this city and its distribution. She had been raised to be married off as soon as possible to another wealthy family, with no familial love or any sort of attention to her as a person. This arranged marriage was to happen soon, and she welcomed a chance to escape the proceedings. When Varen was told of this, he offered to make up for his actions by helping her to an underground city, where she could live as she wished. He had no concrete goals of his own, and even if it did help her in the end, he felt bad for pointing a crossbow at the head of a young girl. What was meant to be a short trip became a lengthy journey. Mercenaries that Iria's father hired were following them constantly. Though Varen had his crossbow and Iria was a magic user, they did not relish the idea of a fight. For the next three years, they were constantly traveling to avoid being found. Even after the marriage probably would have been considered null and void, the mercenaries still came, for her father could not tolerate the thought of a thief successfully stealing from him. Even though it was difficult to avoid them and there were many close calls, Varen found these three years to be the most meaningful of his life. This was mainly because of Iria. He had never gotten close to another person like he had to her. At first they were close friends. Iria's kind nature, as it rubbed off on him, began to make him realize how many people he had hurt by stealing. By the time he was thirty-one, he was considering how to make a new life for himself once they were finally hidden from the mercenaries. It was with much hesitation that he told Iria he loved her, for their age difference and circumstances of meeting made him feel incredibly uneasy to ask her to be his wife. He was stunned when she admitted that she felt the same, and that in spite of him being over half her age, she loved him as well. It was shortly after their confessions that their life together came to an abrupt end. One of the most dogged pursuit groups cornered them inside a cavern. Varen was able to slip behind them, and he saw a way he could take them all out at once; the ceiling was of weak structure, and a hit to the right location would cause a domino effect with a complete cave-in. But before he could enact this plan, Iria wound up being grabbed while still inside the cavern. She saw what Varen was planning and shouted for him to do it. With only moments left before he would have gotten swarmed, Varen released the bolt in his crossbow. His last sight of Iria was her mouthing the word, 'Live,' to him. Then the rocks collapsed, burying the mercenaries and Iria with sharp and heavy stones. Varen had to flee before the leader of the group, the only other person to escape the effects, would have killed him. Varen was certain Iria was dead, and that he had deliberately chosen to kill her, even though she had encouraged him to go through with it. He labeled himself a monster and felt the only way he could repent was to either kill himself or stay alone for the rest of his life. But he knew Iria would not want that. Her last request had been for him to live, and because of that, he was determined to do so, no matter how much he might suffer internally for it. As he turned thirty-two, he began to finally come to a conclusion of what he should do. He would help guard caravans instead of preying on them. It would be a way of repenting for his actions in the past. He was certain it was something Iria would approve of. So even though his heart ached from his loneliness, he went to the nearest city he could find and volunteered to act as a guard.
