Alyosha Popovic: A Beggar Knight who trained under Perun's father, Alyosha was a guiding hand for Perun when he was younger - replacing, in some ways, Perun's own father. Although Alyosha is older now the cleric still looks fondly upon the knight who saved him from his own wrath when he was younger.
Enemies
Veles Blaise: Although Veles is now little more than an old man Perun still harbours great resentment toward the man who killed his father and grandfather. That said, the cleric is happy to wait for time to win an inevitable victory against this foe - for as Perun puts it "why would I soak my hands in his blood when Svarog will eventually take him from this world and cast him into the pit with the demons he cavorts with?" Lord Alexea Tarasova - The sister of Lord Alexei Tarasov, who was dishonoured and executed

48 years ago: Ilya meets Rožanica. Rod disapproves of Ilya, says Ilya will not wed his daughter unless he becomes a Beggar Knight. Ilya begins training to become a Beggar Knight. 44 years ago: Ilya earns a place for himself among the Beggar Knights. Rod gives Ilya the sword Perun. 36 years ago: Ilya takes Alyosha as a student and passes the sword Perun on to him. 33 years ago: The attacks on the Beggar Knights by King Vladimir begin. Ilya and Rožanica conceive Perun. Ilya and Rod are killed three months later by Veles Blaise during the purges by King Vladimir. Rožanica moves to Chernobor. 32 years ago: The boy Perun is born on the same day that King Vladimir dies. Rožanica dies in childbirth. Ratmir moves into Chernobor. Alyosha names the boy Perun after the sword that once belonged to both his father and grandfather. 27 years ago: Perun begins training with the Beggar Knights and the elders of the church. Most church elders regard him as an excellent student, but his trainers are less enthusiastic. "Big strong boy, but with all the grace of a drunk" is used to describe Perun. 20 years ago: Perun is told the truth about his father, Vladimir and Ratmir and is given his father's blade by Alyosha. Angry Perun attempts to kill Ratmir with his father's sword, but is easily stopped. The church elders consider banishing Perun, but Alyosha intercedes on his behalf and saves him from exile. 18 years ago: Perun choose to take a clerical path rather than become a proper Beggar Knight (although his training with the Beggar Knights is evident to anyone who fights with him). Sacred oaths are spoken and Perun is reborn as a Preacher of Svarog. Perun melts down the sword Perun and has it recast as a holy symbol. 15 years ago: Perun completes an apprenticeship of sorts, having served the three years since he joined the faithful of Svarog in the great library of Chernobor. Perun, now more or less a full fledged servant of Svarog, begins ministering to the young children of refugees in Chernobor. His favourite subject, aside from church doctrine, is history but he also excels in the field of mathematics and law. 11 years ago: Perun joins Prince Ratmir and the High Patriarch on their journey to Jarslav to see Ratmir named king in an attempt to end the civil war. The nobles name Ratmir king, but the civil war persists. Perun is given the title of Almoner (which he retains to this day, although his duties rarely have much to do with alms) to secure a place for him in the royal court and is asked to stay on an advise the king for the duration of the civil war. 10 years ago: Perun is sent to the Duchy of Ledoslavl to minister to the king's forces there. While there he teaches many of the commoners who are part of the king's forces (and those from the regions where the army is encamped) the basics of reading and writing and becomes known for his weekly sermons, which are less about Svarog and more about various topics such as mathematics (which he encourages the common folk to learn to ensure they are not mislead by corrupt merchants) and history (which he uses as a tool for his students to reflect on their current situation). Some nobles complain that his help is destabilizing and encourages lesser men to treat nobles as equals. However the morale of those he ministers to is consistently high and many go on to seek training to become Beggar Knights - both of which earn him favour in Jarslav. His reputation as a fierce warrior on the field of battle (he is said to have slain several rebel generals in hand to hand combat) also helps prevent reprisals. 8 years ago: Perun gets caught at the outset of the Old Forest, and leads the defence of Truva Bridge. By holding the bridge with a small force (the enemy was expected to move in force further downstream) Perun ensured Ratmir's forces were able to turn the flank of the enemy and roll up their line. 7 years ago: The Massacre at Kavanoje - enemy forces seize the loyal town of Kavanoje and begin to systematically starve and otherwise murder its occupants. Perun arrives with a large force he personally helped raise, contributes to the liberation of the city and sets up a ministry there to aid those affected by the enemy. He would stay there three years. 4 years ago: The Desney Incident - Perun denounces Lord Tarasov (and his aide Veles Blaise) in front of his men for proposing an attack on a defenceless town in an effort to bring rebel forces (which had been hiding in the area) into the open. Perun deserts the army and heads to rejoin Ratmir's main force. Tarasov sends riders to reach Ratmir first and Perun is charged with desertion. Perun is arrested. ~ The story of Perun Muromets begins as the story of Ilya and Rožanica Muromets, of Rožanica's father Rod Zlogonje and of the tragedy that befell the kingdom when it's wicked king turned away from Svarog. The Sudice began weaving the threads of Ilya and Rožanica together from birth, but they would not encounter one another until Ilya's twenty fifth year. In that year Ilya met the fair maiden Rožanica, her father Rod and learned the condition that Rod placed on any suitor of Rožanica - they must prove themselves worthy of the Beggar Knights. This condition alone had been enough to drive away most suitors, but true love has an intoxicating effect which numbs the mind to the obstacles and leaves only consideration for the goal. So it was that Ilya began to earn his place amongst the Beggar Knights, earning it at long last four years later at the Bridge of Myrmur where Ilya and Rod stood together to defend the bridge against a group of bandits and secure the escape of the poor migrants they had been hounding. In that battle Ilya saved his future father-in-law three times and earned both Rožanica's hand in marriage and the copper and steel sword named Perun, which had been given to Rod by his mentor when he joined the Beggar Knights. For fifteen years the couple were happily married. Both had wanted a family, but time was precious. As a member of the Beggar Knights Ilya was frequently called away to serve the causes of the Church. Neither complained too loudly, but both Ilya and Rožanica privately mused about the difficulties of balancing family and Church and wondered how Rod had managed it. Within the Beggar Knights Ilya did himself and his father-in-law proud. The drive and determination that had brought Ilya into the ranks of the order in the first place served him well. Rod and Ilya were frequently sent on missions together, earning them both the epithet "the Righteous Swords of Svarog". And then King Vladimir turned upon the church and began his horrific purges. Rod, Ilya and Rožanica all retreated to the fortress-church of Chernobor, where the Beggar Knights were head-quartered. Although the confinement and impotence about the situation chafed on both Rod and Ilya, the stability brought time for other things. Ilya and Rožanica were blessed by Svarog and Rožanica became pregnant. There was much celebration, but that joy was to be short lived. A month later word came in from the northern border - the village of Myrmur was being ravaged by bandits and the King - focused on hunting down elements of the Church - refused to send any aid. Although the church would not officially sanction a mission Rod and Ilya both took up the cause and, with a small force of Beggar Knights who offered to join them, set out for Myrmur. Myrmur was a trap. It's people were not in danger from bandits nor had they sent a plea for help to Chernobor, it had been Veles Blaise. Veles had once petitioned the Beggar Knights for admittance but was denied and so he relished in the opportunity given to him by the wicked King Vladimir to hunt them down in vengeance. His trap was carefully laid and was sprung with deadly efficiency. All were killed save for two maimed Beggar Knights who were sent back to Chernobor to tell of what happened. Six months later to the day King Vladimir burned for his sins and the boy who was to be Perun Muromets - heir to the legacy of both Ilya Muromets and Rod Zlogonje - was born. His mother, already weakened by the loss of her husband and father, did not survive his birth, but the Beggar Knights do not forget their honoured dead. Unlike most orphans, who are stripped of their names and placed in orphanages, the boy was allowed to keep his family name and a place was found for him in Chernobor. Alyosha Popvich, who had been Ilya's pupil as Ilya had been Rod's, was given the honour of naming the boy and Alyosha could think of no better name then Perun - the sword that Rod had given to Ilya, that Ilya had given to Alyosha and that Alyosha would one day give to the boy. Life in Chernobor was very sheltered. The chaos that was slowly tearing apart the kingdom did not intrude there, beyond a few tidbits of news brought by travellers. Prince Ratmir's coming was, of course, significant, but Perun was far too young to take notice. As he grew he received training in both the orthodoxy of the church and the martial arts. Of course teachings on just about any topic were available to him - history was a favourite of his and he would spend hours in the library pouring over old tomes about heroes of the past. As he grew he became more aware of his father's death (the church had kept some details secret from him as he grew, for his own good) and the role played in it by Ratmir's father. However although there was a period of resentment Perun forgave Ratmir - after all, how could he hold the sins of Ratmir's father against Ratmir himself, especially as the High Patriarch had extended the priest protection. As Perun grew it became clear that he would not follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. It was a sad wday when the son of Ilya Muromet chose to walk away from the Beggar Knights, but most understood it was the right thing to do, Although he was no pushover it was clear that Perun did not possess the skill enough with a sword to become a member of the Beggar Knights and that no amount of training would change that. He was big boy, and he was strong enough perhaps. But the sword is an elegant weapon and Perun was just too ungainly. At the same time Perun could not simply leave his adoptive family - the people who had cared for him from birth. He could not become a Knight, perhaps, but he could travel with them and carry the word of Svarog to the people. Perun took the sword of his father and grandfather and melted it down, reforging it into a holy symbol of Svarog (for he had picked up some skill in crafting such things). He then joined Ratmir on his crusade, restoring the young prince to the crown. Like his father and grandfather he has etched a name for himself in the history of the kingdom - not as a warrior but as a grim and steady hand, as a calm voice and a sage advisor.
