As a youth, Oren was struck by curiosity for what lies beyond the mountains and he ran away for several years to live among men.  When he returned his family was horrified by what  he had become.  Oren is a disappointment on many levels.  He doesn't love work (he doesn't mind it, but he doesn't love it), he rarely takes things seriously, he dresses outlandishly even by human standards, prefers rather un-dwarvish weapons, and he has even taken up worship of the human God (though he still pays his respects to his ancestors).

While his clan claims Oren's experiences with men is the reason he was selected for this mission, Oren suspects they simply wish to get rid of an embarrassment (and he's probably right.)  Many quietly hope he doesn't return.
