Fridtjof - Jof as he prefers, out of stubborn pride - is the product of an unfortunate set of circumstances. Some 15 years ago his mother was captured by a Nastjor raiding party that boldly crossed the Spine, some say as a reminder to the bordering villages that the Nastjor had not forgotten their old ways. It was not long after the beginning of her captivity that Fridtjof was born, the bastard brood of a vicious underling to the Lord of the Vastjor town the raiding party had returned to - captive Velaxian citizenry in tow. His mother had little hand in his upbringing, having been taken away not long after Fridtjof's birth. The captives knew little of the situation elsewhere in Vastjor. The common perception among many before the raid was that the freedom granted to Varsel and Mitor was but a ruse to deflect the growing criticism of the Vastjor ways. In this particular village, the Dwarves ruled with an iron fist, seeming not to have noted the freedoms granted elsewhere and perhaps even exacting their revenge for perceived weakness at the unfortunate expense of the fresh caught slaves. Fortunately the dominance of the Dwarves strengthened the communal resolve of the Humans, with Jof receiving as good an upbringing possible given the circumstances. As a young boy he listened to the elders tell tales of Velaxia, and allowed the thought of what must be such a wonderful place to always have a place in his mind. They ensured he was not left without a respectable grasp of his mother tongue, but overall Jof was shaped more by the realities of Vastjor than the mere idea of Velaxia. From the very name he bore to his outlook on life. When the Humans adjusted, they were given tasks throughout the town - the young ones made apprentices in numerous trades to the benefit of the Dwarven inhabitants. Jof was considered a troublesome case and given some of the more grueling tasks, while some of his better behaved acquaintances were put to work as carpenters, kitchen helpers and stable hands. Jof struggled through the rigours of his tasks with a persistent attempt at keeping his head held high. There were days where his attempts could be considered feeble at best, but never would he break and grovel before the overseers. He - and many other captives - considered such behaviour to be revolting, although many privately expressed sympathy for the plight of those who they could once call friends. Jof soon became bolder in his resistance to the Nastjor, many times the Human boys would have a feast (comparatively speaking) off of food pilfered from the kitchens. They also took to mock sword fights in the stables, something which struck a chord in Jof as few other things managed. But he was vicious. Often times he would find himself alone in the stable, the others having decided not to participate any longer. There was always the risk of punishment if they were discovered by a roving sentry, but many still decided it was not worth the welts and bruises that Fridtjof often times left them. --- REDACTED --- Appearance: Looking at the boy, it is clear there is more to his lineage than meets the eye. While he would vehemently insist on being Velaxian as a matter of pride, and his sharply defined facial features would support this, none who have encountered a Spine-born Human would deny the influence in his appearance. It was ever present in his tousled hair, a deep red commonly seen among the Dwarven slave masters and slaves alike of Nastjora. He carries himself in a confident manner with a frame betraying the labour oriented focus of his hostile upbringing, a respectable height for his age and among the stronger of his peers.
