Description
Kannaya is short and slight of build, with sloping shoulders, a narrow, somewhat triangular face, and light brown complexion. His hair is a dark brown color and is cropped relatively short. Unlike most members of the Water Tribe, he doesn’t keep his hair tied back in a ponytail or topknot, preferring to let it simply lie flat and slightly disheveled. His eyes are also deep brown, but close observation reveals flecks of blue. Kannaya, like most Water Tribe members, typically wears clothes of varying shades of blue. In cold weather he dons the fur-lined parka traditional for Water Tribe members. In warmer weather, he wears a deep blue tunic that reaches just past his knees over a pair of thin, light blue, slightly baggy pants. Frequently on the road, he wears a brown backpack strapped high across his shoulders. Underneath the backpack you can see two waterskins strapped around his lower back, with their nozzles pointing in opposite directions. He frequently rests his hands on the nozzles of these waterskins. Kannaya’s movements are remarkably smooth and graceful. He seems to have an uncanny understanding of where he is in relation to the ground and his surroundings, and moves extremely fluidly. He has a habit of running one hand through his hair and across the back of his neck.
Personality
Kannaya is relatively quiet and reserved, not offering a lot of information. You can tell that he’s wary about something, and especially avoids questions about his home life. With those he trusts, he becomes much more open and friendly. One of the few subjects that can induce Kannaya into animated conversation and debate is the role of the Avatar. He strongly believes in the balance of the four nations, and, if the circumstances are right, will vehemently criticize the persecution of the Fire Nation and the reticence of the current Avatar.

Kannaya grew up in the Northern Water Tribe, born 24 years after the defeat of Fire Lord Ozai. He is the youngest of three siblings, and was born relatively late in his parents’ lives. His father and mother both remember when Avatar Aang and the Ocean Spirit saved the Northern Water Tribe from defeat by the Fire Nation, and he was raised on stories of the various Avatars. His parents also instilled in Kannaya a strong belief in the balance of the world. His father was a powerful waterbender who remembered the devastating effect of the removal of the moon, and dreaded the coming of a similar imbalance. When the current Avatar began to remove himself from the world and the persecution of firebenders began, Kannaya’s father was vehemently opposed to the witch hunts. The rest of the Water Tribe, caught up in the anti-firebender sentiment of the time, participated willingly and Kannaya’s family became something of a pariah. As he grew older, Kannaya festered under this atmosphere. Shortly after turning 16, he left the Northern Water Tribe late at night and made his way south. He has spent the last two years wandering through the northern and western Earth Kingdom, making his way into the Fire Nation only in the last few weeks. He’s currently passing through Ember Island on his way toward the Fire Nation capital. After he gets there…who knows.
