Description
A rather large and frightening figure, Matthias Raker looks almost as if he's going to war. A very heavy, intricately carved and decorated wood-axe hangs from a loop at his belt, and he carries a large and complicated looking crossbow. He is dressed in utility-minded travelling clothes, and seems to have put some of them on, as well as a dark brown hooded duster, over a pitch-black armor chestplate of some sort. A whistle and a small holy symbol of Ehlonna hang from his neck, glinting dangerously in the moonlight at night. A number of vials, as well as a crowbar, grappling hook, and rope, hang from the belt strapped over his coat and under his coat at the waist, and he carries a large backpack and bolt case over that. He never puts the hood of his coat up, instead favoring a much-worn wide brimmed hat. Under the hat, a pair of dark goggles can be seen riding on his forehead. His overall appearance could best be described as "grungy," and though he doesn't smell, it appears as though it has been some time since he last shaved. He eyes passerby with a look somewhere between suspicion and open hostility. An air of quiet and darkness seems to hang about him, which is actually an artifact of his armor, but doesn't help at all with making a first impression.
Personality
An isolated, insular, and antisocial woodsman, Matthias has spent the last ten years of his life or so relatively alone. His sole true companion is his barely-domesticated wolf, Forge, which seems at times to be friedlier and more empathetic than Matthias himself. Matthias does not do well in terms of dealing with people, and children from the village who have wandered into his hunting grounds while playing have been given nightmares by his sudden and wild yet stealthy appearance, although he has yet to harm one of them. His tone in conversation is blunt, biting, and overly critical. Despite all of this, he is heavily religious, and as the follower of a pair of good gods, he has volunteered his services as a hunter, tracker, and combatant to assault the traitorous Lich and the undead King. Rumors of a more personal reason for this crusade against the undead abound, however...

Contacts / Friends
Forge: Forge is Matthias Raker's sole companion. After Raker's self-imposed retirement to the wilderness, he found a need to do all sorts of things on his own. He built a rudimentary forge at one point in order to help fix his cooking gear, and the next day found an actual alpha wolf using it for the heat, the rest of his pack apparently missing. It was not friendship at first sight, but you can't see the scars on either one of them unless you look at just the right angle. They continued to run into each other in the woods, however, and eventually the pair were hunting together and sleeping at Raker's cabin. Forge is named for the place Raker first found him. He is a male wolf of indeterminate age, with a black-and-dark gray fur pattern and a pair of scars slashed down one flank. Forge is almost as tough as Raker and at least as charismatic. Matthias Raker was raised in the Temple of Pelor initially - the one just outside of Durk. He had no memory of who his parents were, what they had been like, or even what they had named him, so young was he when he was orphaned. The temple priests were decent enough to him, but none of them stepped forward and became a central authority figure, and were rarely at the small rural temple save on or near holy days. He was allowed to play with the other children of the village, but often envied them their happy, whole families and normal homes. Over time, this envy turned to jealousy and subtle loathing, but he kept it to himself. Eventually, when he was 14, the temple elders revealed to him the truth: he was the sole survivor of his family of a necromancer's assault on the town of Durk more than thirteen years previous. The mage had taken control of all the scattered undead in the region, summoned some fiends for good measure, and attempted to take over the area by force. The plan had failed, but not without casualties. This lent the currently bitter Matthias a new focus for all of his pent-up loathing and hatred, and he went on a personal and solitary crusade that would last for the next decade against all the remaining undead and fell forces in the surrounding area. His efforts were lauded by many, although just as many felt that they were unnecessary, as the undead hadn't been a threat since the big attack, giving him the epithet "Mad Matthias." During this time he learned a number of ways to defeat and destroy the undead, often the hard way, as he hunted through the wilderness for months at a time, to return to town for only a couple of days to restock and head out. He eventually became even more effective when he finally convinced the temple to enhance his equipment in this manner, gaining access to potions, enchanted gear, and a powerful and complex crossbow that could even harm the incorporeal targets. Eventually, though, he simply... quit. Ten years of hard labor fueled by hatred had left him burned out and bone-tired, and he returned to the town to begin a "normal" life. A decade of hunting supernatural targets does not prepare one for the normal town life, however, and having little contact for such a long time with people who were still moving *and* alive does little to improve social skills. Matthias moved out to a patch of woods a good distance from town, long since free of menace, and built a small cabin there, and spent the next decade of his life simply... existing, taking what joy he could from the simple pleasures of hunting for and growing his food. During this early semi-retirement only a couple things of note happened to him - he found an old and heavily enchanted elven wood-axe buried to the pommel in a creek near his home, and discovered that it could deliver a heavy shock on impact, and returned to him if he threw it. This gave him a new hobby to practice with his crossbow marksmanship, and he since has become quite good at throwing any number of objects. He also took up the worship of Ehlonna, goddess of the woods, in addition to Pelor. The second thing was that he aquired his pet wolf, Forge. During this time his social skills and personality deteriorated even more, and though he remained an avid reader, gathering a new book or two every time he came to town for holy day preaching by the temple. However, he became even more crotchety and short tempered, which combined with his overall demeanor and "look" earned him the nickname "Old Man Raker" by the village children, even though he isn't yet thirty-five. And then one day, he went to Durk on a relatively simple errand to find it packed to overflowing by the fleeing refugees of Calamdor, and gathered from their scattered accounts what had happened. The old fire reawakened when he realized the scope of the devastation, and he returned to his cabin to retrieve his gear and find Forge, and then moved to the temple to restock on potions and have the equipment and enchantments checked. The Matthias Raker of ten years before is back, his time spent hunting with his crossbow and practicing with the axe about to be put to good use, his knowledge of the weaknesses of the undead still undimmed in his mind. This time, the opponent is not only among the soulless living dead himself, but one who would summon more of the abominations into the world, and "Mad Matthias" is out destroy him once and for all, or die trying.
