Setting Information

This adventure path will take place in the Inner Sea region of the world of Golarion, a setting created by the good people at paizo for the Pathfinder game system. If you're not already familiar with the setting, you're in luck, because there are some useful online resources that will help you create your character's background, some of which I will link here.

The World of Golarion

The primary area where this particular campaign will take place will be the frontier region of Varisia, an expansive and dynamic region found in the northwestern section of the continent of Avistan. It is reasonable to believe that a first level character would have originated somewhere in that area, although this is not a strict requirement. The adventure will begin in the town of Sandpoint. That said, you are free to write a character from anywhere on the continents of Avistan and Garund, and beyond.

The above sources, and the information posted throughout this thread, give you a general outline of the world of Golarion, but if you would like to read about it in more depth, or to have your own downloadable source of information on the Inner Sea region, there is a World Guide available from paizo that can be downloaded in pdf form at a small cost. It is a beautifully conceived and well written and illustrated piece of literature, but it is not required reading, as you can find all that you will need in the links above.

Human Ethnicities of Golarion

If you should choose to play a human, you may choose from among the following ethnicities native to the world of Golarion. Aside from giving your character some background and culture, your choice may also have minor mechanical benefits, such as deciding which regional feats are available to you.

Here is a brief decription of the major human ethnic groups found in the world:

Favored Regions: Chelaxians are most commonly found in the former holdings of Imperial Cheliax, which includes Andoran, Galt, Molthune, Nirmathas, and the southern reaches of Varisa, including such urban centers as Korvosa and Magnimar.
Favored Deities: For many centuries, Chelaxians were almost exclusively worshipers of Aroden, the Last Azlanti. With that god’s death, they have turned to a variety of gods and beliefs, including Erastil, Iomedae, Zon-Kuthon, and the practice of diabolism, venerating the vile devil-court of Asmodeus.

Human Languages
These are the various regional dialects spoken by the major human ethnicities of Golarion:

Non-Human Languages
These are the languages of the major non-human races of Golarion, and also those attributed to particular sects such as druidic. Of course there are many more languages native to the less prominent races of the world. Only the most common are listed here.

Darklands Languages
These are the languages native to races and cultures found in the vast subterranean area of Golarion known as the Darklands. Again, there are probably others as well. These are the most common.

Languages of the Great Beyond
These are the most common languages native to beings from the outer planes.

Dead Languages
These are the ancient languages of Golarion's lost civilizations, and are often the building blocks for most modern languages.

In addition to the major religions that are listed above, there are also a number of other deities that would be acceptable, although if you want to choose one other than those I've listed, I'd rather you limit your choices to the racial pantheons, and stay away from those that are specific to other continents like the Dragon Kingdoms or Vudra.

Rise of the Runelords Campaign Information

If you would like a little more background to prepare you for this campaign, I suggest you take a look at the Player's guide for the Rise of the Runelords adventure path. The guide is available as a free download in pdf form. You will need to be registered with paizo to download this, but that requires nothing more than was required to join Myth Weavers, a valid email address.

As I've already mentioned, the campaign will begin in the town of Sandpoint, and will see your characters visiting there fairly often, or possibly even taking up residence at some point. The town itself has been fleshed out wita wide variety of people and places that you will be free to interact with as the story begins. For now, I'll provide you with a detailed map of the city:

The Town of Sandpoint

At the start of the campaign, your character will need a reason for being in the town of Sandpoint. You can base that reasoning on the general information found here:

Sandpoint is a small town that sits along the Lost Coast Road, about fifty miles north of the much larger city of Magnimar. It would be common for travelers to be passing through on a fairly regular basis. There are sprawling farmlands to the east that would bring traders into town to sell their crops. There are also vast wild areas of the eastern Hinterlands that would bring wanderers, explorers and adventurers to Sandpoint.

Today, a celebration will take place in town called the Swallowtail Festival. The festival will mark the dedication of a new temple. The large cathedral houses churches of not only Desna, whom the festival is named to commemorate, but also Abadar, Erastil, Gozreh, Sarenrae and Shelyn, an event that is sure to attract clergymen, religious scholars and historians from around the region.

There are also the social aspects of the festival, sure to bring folks looking to socialize, make contacts or seek pleasant company, and also those with more nefarious reasons to get lost in a crowd. There will be a large street fair as part of the festival which will present an opportunity for merchants and collectors to buy, sell and trade their wares. The festival will also take place on the first day of autumn, so there is a nature angle as well.

And then there are the constant attractions that Sandpoint has to offer. The Old Light is a point of interest for archaeologists and architectural historians. The Sanpoint Theater is a popular attraction, and brings all sorts of artists and performers into town on a regular basis. There are also those who are intrigued by the mysteries of the Late Unpleasantness, Choppers Isle, and even the fabled Sandpoint Devil.

As you can see, there is no shortage of motivations for characters to have shown up in the town of Sandpoint.
