Description: Luris, being a Halfling, is just over three feet tall with a build is only slightly more muscular than average. His brown hair hangs in a pony tail down to below his waist. He wears dark baggy pants that are wrapped from the knee to the ankle by a leather cord. As with most Halflings, he travels on his bare feet. He dons a sleeveless linen shirt and a worn leather vest.
Luris is a friendly enough fellow. But there is always an air of suspicion around him. He always seems to be looking for something. He rarely misses the opportunity to ‘acquire’ something if it presents itself, and his chances are better than slim. He loves to play cards, and has lost as much, if not more than he’s ever gained. He enjoys a stout ale as much as any dwarf, and any party he can get himself in to. But, at times, there is a darker side to him. He grows quiet and aloof. Those that know him, recognize this mood and are careful to keep a closer eye on their possessions than normal.
Luris works on the boat. He climbs the mast and works the sail and ropes. He’s limber and manages the perilous job with ease. When he’s not on the job, he enjoys his ale and can at times get kind of bawdy. But nobody seems to know where Luris is from or what brought him aboard the ship. Those that have asked about his past manage to get an answer that never seems to tell them anything. They do know that he’s generous and kind to those he claims as friends, but can be ruthless to those he sees as enemies. But all in all, he has been accepted as a mate and acquaintance, if not a friend.
Luris is from Lubbertown, in Riddleport. There is no law there and if you have anything it’s because you took it. And if you want to keep it, you have to learn to protect it. You have to make your own rules and learn to live by your wits. It is a hard life and it taught Luris many lessons, most of them the hard way.
His mother was employed by one of the local brothels. The story is that she truly loved this one particular ‘customer’ who was Luris’ father. That is why she would not give him up. But, as much as she cared for Luris, her work kept her from him much of the time. He worked the brothel, doing odd jobs and running errands. That’s where he discovered his talent to ‘acquire’ things.
They were little things at first; a coin here, a trinket there. It was never enough to get him into trouble, but he soon had quite a collection and began to trade and sell to earn more. It wasn’t long before he was recruited into one of the local guilds and his career took off, so to speak. His acquisitions became larger and larger. He began to take not just from the johns, but following them to their residence and acquiring items from there as well.
Despite a few close calls, Luris was doing well. But one morning, he found that his mother had not come home. While this was not unheard of, it was very rare. Luris went to the brothel to check on her. He found her in a room, beaten and bloodied. He made sure she was alive and got her to a chair before he noticed the man lying on the bed, passed out cold. An anger arose in Luris that he’d never experienced. Without another thought, he pulled the man’s knife from his sheath and stabbed him numerous times. He only stopped when he realized that the screaming was not him, but his mother. She grabbed the dagger and pushed Luris out of the room, yelling for him to run. And run he did.
He tried to return a few days later, but found that the owner of the brothel had a reward out for him, granted it was only 25GP. Still it was enough to keep him away. He was able to find out that his mother was healing and would be okay. So he sent her a note and left Lubbertown to find his fortune.
Luris has pretty simple aspirations at this point. He wants to get rich and enjoy life. He has no desires for nobility or fame, as he prefers to life outside the notice of most. But he does have hopes of being more than just a simple thief someday. But what that is, he doesn’t yet know.
