Players Wanted: 4 more (we already have one player confirmed) Application Deadline: Friday, October 12, 2012 System: Dungeons & Dragons, 4th Edition Setting: Forgotten Realms, 1370
Character Creation:
All characters will be created using the standard character creation rules presented on page 12 of the Player's Handbook, with the following exceptions:
Races: No drow or warforged. Neither of us are big fans of monstrous races, so an application featuring a monstrous race needs to be exceptional to get in.
Background: You may choose one General or Forgotten Realms background benefit. No other background benefits may be used.
Themes: We will not be using themes for this game.
Equipment: One magic item of 4th, 3rd, and 2nd level, as well as 680 gp you can spend in any way you choose.
Allowed Sources: All official content and Dragon Magazine is allowed. I don't own all the material, so I may need to look certain things over.
Would something particulalrly inhuman, like a thri-kreen, be frowned upon? Or by "monstrous races" do you just mean stuff out of the Manuals, like goblins and bugbears? I was considering having my character be some sort of exotic pet to his masters.
Posting for interest, a campaign in this vane was my older brother's favorite campaign of all time. He still reminisces about it whenever we get together. I like to give my characters some thought so I'll be back with an app if I can actually come up with someone I think deserves to be played.

A Thri-kreen would fit into our "monstrous races" category. To further expound, we mean races that are in the players handbooks, but are particularly inhuman (as you put it), like shardminds, minotaurs, warforged (although they are not allowed at all), etc.
Doesn't mean you can't make one, but you would have to really blow us away with the applications.

A thri-kreen, as aquilifer mentioned, would fit into that category. However, if you feel like you have a great concept, go for it! Thri-kreen are by no means banned, and I can imagine how that concept might work well - just convince us you can pull it off
*Work in Progress: Complete* Note: I'm not entirely sure what's going on in 1370, so if anything in my app doesn't match the time zone, please tell me so I can change it.
Name: Eberk Marvolen, of Dirkcrest Clan Race: Dwarf Class: Guardian Fighter of Mordin Alignment: Good
"War is not an option lad, it finds us all eventually. So the best ye can do is prepare for it. And hope that, when it do come, yer more prepared than the enemy." -Eberk describing war to Dersan
He is calm, gruff and prone to using dwaven oaths. Though his battered outward appearance make many wary of him, he tries not to care and Instead focus on protecting and helping the friends he already has.
While he is not totally warlike in nature he will defend his ideals to the death or until he sees the world as a just and fair place. His devotion to order makes him a bit of a stickler for rules, he shuns thievery and does his best to avoid murder and assassinations saying, "That's not the way a Dwarf'd do it."
His father's death caused him much sorrow, as he was quite close to his father. Some times, if he let's his hard outer shell slip a bit, you can see that some wounds do not close all the way, even with time...
"I'm what? Four, five feet? And how'n do you suppose I'm to lug that great thing about?"
-Eberk and Dersan searching the drow armory
Eberk's long red hair, is swept low over a brow fraught with wrinkles, from years of calling to his god Mordin in battle. Below that a pair of eyes, brilliant as gems just cut form their rocky beds, gleam with a light that shows the tactical and hardened mind within his thick, dwarven skull.
His beard, as red as his hair, is braided in the intricate knots and braids of the Dirkcreast clan and hangs to just above his wide and slightly portly wast.
His arms are scared with many battles, and tattooed with the stories of those battles, as customary of the Dirkcrest clan.
Under his armor, Eberk wears cloth garments made of dark brown fabric, he claims that they remind him of the earth and the halls where he grew. He wears a suit of armor and carries a shield uniform to the defenders of Drikcrest Clan, however his axe was made by his father, and though it has many notches in it, he treasures it the same as when he first received.
"You should'ave seen Cailmport in it's good days. Not now that's its full of crime lords and the such, but back when a dwarf could walk the streets and feel the sea breeze with o' fearing a dagger in the ribs!"
-Eberk explaining Cailmport to Dersan
Eberk grew up in a clan of dwarven traders, carving a living out of the sandy mountains near Calimport. Every since a young age Eberk wanted to join a caravan and travel the world. His chance to prove himself worthy, came in the form of a small salt caravan, working for low wages.
Within the first month of travel the caravan was set upon and destroyed, leaving Eberk the only survivor. He was taken captive by the bandits and sold to a drow slaver.
Once in the Underdark, Eberk broke free of his binds and slipped away from the caravan. He wandered the hostile Underdark for a short time before being found and again captured by the wicked drow. This time however it seems he is among friends... *Read the the Character-sheet Background Section for an in-depth version (Link not included, Currently Being Revised)*
"Hopes keep me going lad, they're all I have left. All anyone has left in the underground hell."
-Eberk telling Dersan his hopes and dreams
(1) To unify the freed slaves of Sanctuary into an organized and working government. (2) To bring justice and order to the chaotic Underdark. (3) To escape the foul Underdark, reverse the changes that his time here enacted upon him, and discover what has become of his home in the Dirkcrest Clan.
"I'll be back for ye lad, don't you worry. I'll never forget your kindness to me, and a dwarf's word is his life."
-Eberk and Dersan parting
Allies The Dwarfs of Clan Dirkcrest - His family and friends Dersan Vile - A rouge by nature, though his heart is good. He help Eberk escape his first drow captors, and remains a friend of Eberk to this day, though Eberk dosn't know where he is. Charlene: The Skull Eyed Girl - A slave of the drow, and as close to a daughter as Eberk has ever had. She reminds him greatly of Dersan, and he hopes to show her that there is more beauty to life than she thinks.
Enemies Gzer'votak - His original drow slaver. The Toothless Man- Leader of the Moon Sons, a band of murderous thugs bend on destruction and pillaging. Sandman - The man who can not be killed, and a master of weapons. The killer of his father.
So. This'll be my first ever post, and also, the first time I've attempted this sort of thing. Just recently picked up the 4e's Player Handbook, and I've been eagerly waiting to try out my first campaign.
Character Name: 'Charlene' : The Skull Eyed Girl'. Race: Human. Class: Rogue. Alignment: Unaligned.
Quote:
"If servitude was an art... Then I'd be its masterpiece."
-Charlene.
Quote:
"Feelings? I don't have time for that. Emotions are nothing but a burden that weighs you down. It doesn't matter who 'feels' more in this game called life. What matters is that you live and you serve your purpose to the best of your ability."
-Charlene's view on emotion.
Charlene calls her way of thinking as a 'survivalist' mindset. She doesn't bother getting attached to any sort of emotion; rather, she bases her decisions and view of life by her instincts. To her, emotions are nothing but a 'self-imposed challenge' fools burden themselves with. Throughout her life, she's seen what people with emotions have to go through: Heartbreak, rage, depression, self-depreciation. For one who's main focus is to survive, Charlene believes that tying oneself to their feelings is but a disadvantage they place on each other. As such, she remains quite apathetic. She remains cool-headed even when faced with danger; it's in her mindset to just trust her instincts rather then her consciousness. Don't take her views to be completely set in stone, however. Though she believes in letting herself go from feelings, it's in her nature to feel empathy. One could note she is very curious, especially when it comes to the world around her, or when learning a skill that could benefit her in the future. It's almost childlike in behavior, and she can't help herself when intrigue catches her mind. She does feel emotion, however; Charlene has kept it hidden away due to a self-made promise she made.
Quote:
"I apologize if I'm being too blunt. But understand this. I don't need a bunch of strangers giving me their burdens. I don't want to get to know you. Just let me do my job, and I'll let you do yours."
-Charlene 'arguing' with a fellow slave.
Charlene isn't much to look at. Considering she's spent most of her life as a Slave, she hasn't gotten the chance to pamper herself; looking 'pretty' is at the bottom of her priority list at the moment. As such, she has long, unkempt hair that's black, at least waist-length. The hair itself is rather dirty from all the lack of care, accumulating into a big mess of hair. Her tan skin is also covered in grime and even more dirt, which is unfortunate, since if she did get herself clean, she'd look rather attractive. When time can permit itself, she would try her best to look as best as she can.
What is Charlene's most interesting trait appearance wise are her eyes. One eye is colored amber; though it seems to have been dulled by her exhaustion of the world around her. What is more interesting is her right eye that has been discolored. The eye is slate colored, and to make it more strange is the sudden shift of pigmentation in her eye, turning the rest of it to an oddly-shaped ivory formation. Careful inspection and some imagination leads people to believe the discoloration looks strangely like a skull.
Her companions will notice she's not normal. She tends to keep to herself, and avoids contact, but is not cold-hearted. It's easier to describe her as... 'distant'. She will talk to her peers, discuss plans and tactics, but she won't bother to get attached to them. To her, building relationships would just mean someone could exploit them, and give her yet another disadvantage should the time come. As such, she won't try to get to know someone, nor will she let anyone know about her, thus, she will remain curt to her allies. The reason why she remains like this is because it's her way of keeping some sort of promise she made to herself.
Quote:
"How can an adorable thing like you not have a name?" The Mistress asked, lightly tapping my nose in a playful manner. "I guess it's my obligation to reward you with a name for your duties..."
"If that is what you wish, My Lady."
"Hm... You look like a Charlene to me." She stated after a minute's pause. "Do you like your name, Charlene?"
"If you enjoy it, then I enjoy it, My Lady." I couldn't get over her harmonious laugh as I answered the way I normally did. If I were to take this gift she had given me... Then I will take it with pride.
-Charlene getting her name from her last Mistress.
Charlene's life was unfortunately not one blessed by the Gods. She was born in the slums of some vile town she can't even remember. Her mother; a mere beggar on the streets, decided to do the most reasonable thing in her mind; sell the child to slavery, and get a pretty penny for her troubles. Charlene spent the next two-decades being a Slave. Knowing nothing else but how to serve, she spent her days becoming diligent in her duties, and fulfilling the orders of her trainers. She was a fine specimen who knew nothing but to serve and survive, and would, of course, fetch a high price for her sellers. She spent many years going from different Masters to Mistresses, used as a temporary servant to help increase their funding. Once she was hired by someone, she began attending to her duties to the best of her abilities. All that she asked for was to not be known, any place to rest, and to be taught skills she did not have access to. She was taught many assets that would come in handy in the future. One Master she was sold to taught her the way of the blade to act as a guard in dire need. Another taught her how to read in write so he would not be bothered sending letters of utmost importance to his peers. Then, in a few years or so, her 'family', the slavers that took her in, would come, take her back, and get their pay.
This went on for for many years. Income had never been better for her trainers. 'The Skull Eyed Girl', as she was known, had been known to be simply the best servant anyone could ask for. With this knowledge passed around, another buyer came to enlist her aid. Her current owner however, was far different then anyone she had served. The estate she was currently working for was a beautiful land she had never seen before. The lady of the manor was something moreso. The way her new Mistress captivated her was something she had never felt before. A bond began to develop between the two; which might have been the first time the slave had ever gained such feelings. When the three years of her contract had passed, she felt like it was her obligation to stay. The woman had given her so much more then her other Masters had ever done. Because of her new Mistress, she even had a name to be referred to: Charlene. But the contract had expired, and her duties were done. She returned back to her sellers, before proclaiming 'I serve you, and you alone.'
That proclamation had alerted her trainers. Their perfect slave, in her own, unique way, was rebelling against them. If word got out she would serve only one Mistress, no one would come to enlist her services. She would have to be permanently bought, and cause much of their revenue to plummet. To stall for time, her traders bargained to 'her Mistress' to garner enough funds to keep her permanently. The agreement was 5 platinum coins, and 'Charlene', as she was called now, would be hers. With her Mistress eagerly accepting the proposition, she began to collect the funds needed to buy her. In an effort to get her 'fixed' she was sold to the drow for extensive training, while her Mistress began building the funds. If anyone knew how to break one's will, it'd be those who lurked in the Underdark. Their hopes was to have Charlene's will 'break', and have her forget the Mistress entirely. As she was brought to the caravan, she steeled herself, doing her best to keep apathetic. She hid away those emotions she kept so dear to her. She became the Slave she once was, only wishing to give herself; her true self, to the one she held dear to her heart. Somehow, she'd find a way to return to her Mistress. Somehow, Charlene would find the one that was rightfully hers.
Quote:
"If you truly want to know, Eberk... Then I will answer you. I am quite happy with my life of servitude. I am a Slave, and I will remain as a Slave, no matter how hard you try to convince me. But by no means will I want to go with these drow. They are not my Masters. There is only one that I hold to my heart. And I will stop at nothing to reunite with her once again."
-Charlene finally opening up to Eberk Marvolen, and discussing her biggest goal.
Charlene has only one goal in life. She wants to reunite with her Mistress, and will stop at nothing to achieve it. Her life; her very soul belongs to the one that took her in for three years. If she has to distance herself from others in order to get a higher chance to survive long enough to get her way back, she will do so without hesitation. Charlene's life is incomplete without her standing right beside her Mistress. Without her, she believes that her life holds no purpose without her.
Other goals don't matter much to her. What she could consider as a secondary goal is to get her 'father figure', Eberk, out of the Underdark alive. Considering he is the best bet, and the closest thing she can call an ally at the moment, Charlene wants to ensure that the Dwarf fighter gets out of the Underdark alive.
Quote:
"Do not get in my way. I will cut down anyone who does so. Liabilities such as you count as 'getting in my way'."
-Charlene to one of her colleagues.
At the moment, Charlene has no enemies, and few allies. Allies to her the people who are efficient enough to do their job, and do it well. Enemies are those who attack her, or those who she claims are 'liabilities', which pertains to anyone not picking up their end of the work, or those burdening the ones who are doing their jobs.
If there was one character she could call an ally at the moment, however, it'd be the Eberk Marvolen. Considering he has already escaped from slaver hands once (albeit for a short period of time), Charlene has found Eberk to be one of her best chances to help with her own survival. She is also rather captivated by his story, and finds it in her best bet to work together with the one belonging to the Dirkcrest Clan. He does find his attempts to show her a 'new world' to be pointless, but still does her best to stick around and listen, due to her curiosity.
Note: I did by best to try and get as much detail as possible whilst keeping up to what you asked for. Sorry if there's too much going on in my profile. Still a bit giddy with it being my first time and all.
