And why should there be? Nothing happening there we need to even be concerned with, it's just Syria bulldozing villages and killing people to make sure they're free to practice freedom.

So you're construing the actions of a minority dictatorship as being exactly the same thing as the desires of the man in the Egyptian street. I know you're being thinly facetious to attempt to ridicule an idea you disagree with rather than actually engage it, but the actions of the Syrian military is influenced by a desire to repress a popular uprising so that a hereditary family can remain in power, not for establishing any sort of religious order or to persecute anything but the group of 'people that don't like the Bashir regime' which crosses a great number of social lines.

One man's repression of a popular uprising is another man's cultural freedom apparently. It's neofreedom. I don't think we should sit here in our ivory towers and try to make judgements about which version of Syrian freedom is superior.

The fck are you even saying Ben? Are you seriously equating someone suggesting that the rights of a group are more important than the right of a person to say whatever the hell they want with the systematic murder of civilians by a dictatorship?

In a very nonsensical way yes. You haven't really addressed it beyond insane comparisons and ridicule though. And 'It's not how we do it in America' isn't exactly a valid answer here. Hell, that sort of thinking is pretty much half the reason that this is occurring at all.

So Sav, clear this up for me please: You would prefer we censor and prosecute people who may offend people crazed enough to go about killing others, and even genocide opposed to acknowledging that there is something wrong with people who are willing to go to such extremes over something someone said or made?

I would prefer that if an individual says something that causes mass chaos and real physical harm, they should be liable for it. Say what you want, by all means. But at the same time, there should be consequences for things said that go beyond the pale.

Also, genocide? Really? Wee bit hyperbolic there. The last time the US interacted with a genocide, it was to stand silently aside while the Hutus butchered the Tutsis. Even Syria hasn't descended to that point yet, though it might well be headed in that direction if things don't get any better.

Kosovo was after that and we intervened there.

Only due to NATO obligations.
