I've looked at it and thought about it, and meditated on it (sort of), drank on it, and everything else. I can't lie and say that it doesn't make sense that way, although I feel that if someone ingests the stuff for the first time (since their body isn't adjusted to it) there should be a roll to see if the character is able to survive it without sustaining some kind of effect (maybe not death) but some kind of effect.

Strictly for narrative purposes though.

Looking at it from the player who has a spice addict character, one has to look out for himself to make sure something doesn't happen that puts my character or the concept at too much risk. I do agree that the simplicity of this method though is perfect and if the GM doesn't mind too much I can actually work a few side-effects into Gugnar (which thanks to a few comic books, I can actually provide a picture of him now that he's been on the spice for a few years).
