D&D 3.5 Magic help

That's no fun to control the game. I prefer the Bard or Sorcerer in terms of magic classes.

The nice thing about wizards is you can set your power pretty much where you like. Sure, you can power it up, rule the cosmos, sort of thing, but you can also keep things low key and focus on doing A) those things that no one else can do, and B) things that make everyone else better.

The big thing, as a wizard, is to let everyone else shine at their respective jobs. If someone else has ranked up in open lock, don't prepare knock all the time. Don't just auto-end fights (unless they're turning against the party). Make it easier for others to end the fights. Make the other players glad you're there, rather than make them wonder why they bothered showing up.

Ironically, those are quite powerful as well and also can perform in the control, utility, and buffing departments.

The Bard especially can punch well outside of its assumed weight class if the player is clever enough.

The sorcerer can break reality harder, but that's to be expected as it's just a wizard that can't decide to break reality a different way every day.
