Shrapnel Shells
Yeah, I outdid myself again...
Referring to steam catapults of earlier (and really, any throwers), I've created anti-infantry munitions for them because, well, large rocks plain suck against oncoming armies. The munition is rather cheap:
1) 50 gp stone of scatterspray on impact
2) lots of little rocks and miscellaneous sharp metal bits, maybe caltrops
3) glue together
I ran some simulations, and a unit of 400 soldiers didn't even make it all the way across the 300-foot-wide field before they totally lost combat power under the fire of just six catapults loaded with this. They can't run, mind, because the field's too chewed up and muddy for that.
How to keep advances from being boggled down by artillery fire?
