Rules Question - "Explicit Content"

I didn't notice it until the private thread discussion but what are the general limits on this in terms of how it's been enforced in the past, etc. Like I've ran Samurai games where they've been to an opium den to take out drug king-pins. Geisha houses of the artful and traditional and "less artsy" variety. Shadowrun has quite a bit of Trolls with mini-guns who can shoot up with a variety of drugs some of which increase combat power. Spies flirting with PC's to get data from them, etc.

I'm an adult perfectly capable of drawing the line between having these things in my game without the game turning into a drug fueled sex party and keeping it within the bounds of stories told on primetime TV but I wasn't sure if any of that violated the rules.

It's never been a problem for me but in the other thread the topic came up and I just wanted to be sure. Different regions of the world have far different standards of decency so I wanted some clarification.

Explicit Content

Posted material is not to include obscene, indecent, or offensive language, description or discussion of illicit drugs, sexually suggestive language, or appeal to a prurient interest.

We don't want cybering, collaborative torture porn fiction, explicitly role playing meth, heroin, or cocaine addiction and all its baggage, etc. MW is based in the US, has admins in the US, UK, and Singapore (but from Oz), and therefore has a very western culture view on explicit content. PG13 used to be our guideline, but that was considered too obscure a reference for non-US-ians, and so we switched to the standard legalese content definition.

Your "within the bounds of stories told on primetime TV" sounds good to me.

Sounds to me like your Samurai game had sexually suggestive language (flirting, geisha houses) and plenty of discussion and description of drugs.

Thanks very much for bringing this up. I'll be taking my games elsewhere, and using MW to discuss world building and other creative type stuff.
Drugs, sex, and violence make to world go round, and I dislike the fact that violence is fine, but other mature themes are not, in the lower rating categories etc in movies games and on TV.
I can graphically dismember a mage, but I can't inject a stim. Lame.

The quote of the disclaimer is important, we're not obligating ourselves to lay down the hammer any and every time someone puts a toe across the (intentionally fuzzy) line. We're enabling ourselves to if we feel it's out of hand, because a site full of all that is not the kind of site I want to run, it's not the kind of site I can share with friends, family, and colleagues and be proud of, and not worry what might be on it.

We don't take well to unnecessarily detailed descriptions of "graphically dismember[ing] a mage" either… but I don't see that injecting a stim, your character smoking a joint, or getting together with a prostitute is necessarily graphic or explicit - it can be implicit, and that's exactly what they do in "primetime TV". Acknowledge it's there, and skim over it.

Ah, good to know.

This does fill me with some trepidation and make me uncertain what might be against site rules. Like there is some disturbing imagery in "The Walking Dead". And I'd feel really bad if I accidentally crossed that line. And it would really suck to be banned for an accident.

The Walking Dead is a pretty good example (I only watched the first season) because in it the more graphic scenes are usually just a scream amidst a pile of zombies or the camera cuts over to the witnesses face as he watches in horror while a friend gets torn apart. The opening scene with the little girl zombie which made my skin crawl they showed the doll drop to the ground as the pistol was fired but didn't show her head being torn apart or anything. It doesn't go into bit by bit gory detail.

LOL, fair enough!

Honestly, even if you aren't you should be.

You can't know someone's intentions. The only way to maintain any set of rules, as fallible humans, is to punish actions and not intentions.

The Walking Dead is actually a bad example for this, considering it's not on Primetime television. They use explicit language and have explicit scenes.
A good example of what prime time tv gets away with, however, is House.
