Frang Bitterwood - Stablemaster
Name
: Frang Bitterwood
Affiliation
: The Night's Watch (Previously House Stark)
Age
: 25
Archetype
: "
Deserter
" Ranger of the night's watch
Background
: Previously a soldier in service to House Stark, Frang Bitterwood had just been accepted as a man before marching alongside his lord during Robert's Rebellion. Like all youth's present in wartime, Frang had many hopes of coming home a war hero, lauded by women everywhere and bedding everyone he could get his hands on. Instead, Frang never returned to Winterfell to **** his whores... He ended up on the wall.
How did this happen? Well, when you march into war, you march with a variety of people of sometimes drastically different skills. Some are just more gifted with a sword than others, while some have a natural knack for tactical warfare... and some are really just cowards under all the bluster.
A member of one of the very many squads of footmen that comprised the army that marched against the throne, Frang was shocked to find that despite all his skill with the sword, you really didn't amount to much on the field when you knew nothing of practical application. For every man their squad killed, another would fall immediately after. He wasn't part of an elite cadre of warriors: He was just a boy, forced to be a man, killing other boys in the name of an ambitious lord. Soon, unable to keep up with the horror of war, he fled in the chaos, even throwing one of his childhood friends directly into harms way to ensure his safety. It is what cowards do.
Among the clashing of steel on steel, of blood covering the ground like so much ominous paint, Frang Bitterwood huddled under the corpses of his fellow men, he waited for the battle to end, for the people to move on and leave. He wasn't expecting himself to survive the war, not many do afterall, but in the end... well, history books can tell you what happened.
As he made his way back to the people, he worried about the truth coming out; that he had betrayed his brothers in arms and he would be killed for his actions as all spineless worms would... but it never came. Nobody knew.
Nobody but Frang.
After the dust had settled, and Robert Baratheon became the king of the Seven Kingdoms, the guilt constantly came to gnaw at him until one day, without anybody knowing the real reason why, he chose To Take the Black. Partly to atone for his sins and mostly, because he was afraid that the truth would one day come to pass and he'd have to head there anyway.
Now, many years later, Frang Bitterwood finds himself a ranger and recruiter of the Night's Watch. His duty takes him far across Westeros, rounding up fresh meat for The Wall. The men he obtains are some of the best this generation had seen but it wasn't because he was particularly good at finding diamond's in the rough. Oh no, not at all. The reason he finds people so fanatical to serve on the wall is because anybody he speaks to with even just a slight inch of weakness somehow choose the sword instead...
He purposely "convinces" criminals to choose death instead of The Oath. Why? Because he needs to return to the Wall when he has sufficient recruits... but when you lack the men, you just keep on searching for more.
Frang might be a coward, but he's a coward who knows how to survive.
Personality
: Frang carries an air of dignity about him, part of the ruse he maintains to mask his secret. While honestly capable with a sword and his bare hands, he insists on keeping a low profile because any responsibility might put him at severe risk, both bodily and "socially". He speaks little to the public but when he wants to, he can feign menacing far better than many generals.
