Martialis was born into the height of imperial privilege. The Varga noble house, one of the first established in the Calixis sector. When Lord Militant Angevin first claimed the worlds of the sector in the name of the Imperium it was the Varga’s that followed. Since then almost every major military conflict in the sector has had a Varga leading men into battle. Captains, lieutenants, Colonels, Generals, the Varga family has willingly sacrificed its young men and women in service to the God-Emperor.

Martialis, like his father and grandfather before him, was expected to become a warrior and an officer. Fate however had a different path for him. At the age of 9 his latent psychic talents manifested for the first time. This was a problem for the house as the potential stigma associated with the psykers gifts could taint the family name for generations. There was talk between the house elders to simply disown the boy, discarding him into the less than tender mercies of the black ships of the inquisition.
The decision might have been different had not Martialis gifts manifest during such a public event as the Angevinian Feasting when the house and its allies honour those who fought during the crusade. With the knowledge already public the inquisition’s black ships soon arrived and took the young Martialis from the pampered comfort he’d live in thus far.

Life on the black ship was horrendous for Martialis, but his time on terra was worst. When his psychic potential was first assessed it was discovered that his mind was an unfathomably deep void of nothingness, all attempts to scry his mind finding nothing but void. Convinced the boy hid some dark secret the inquisition attempted to break the darkness covering his mind. They were ultimately unsuccessful but the process left him broken both physically and mentally. Keen not to waste his talents the inquisition repaired his injuries before turning him over to the Scholastica Psykana for training.

For decades Martialis moved from various Psykana postings, most of which involved fighting on the front lines with units of the imperial guard. It was 2 years ago when Martialis once again came to the attention of the inquisition. The guard unit he was assigned to was tasked with holding a forward fortification against the heretic forces arrayed against them. The first few assaults had been merely probing thrusts when, just after midnight when the main attack occurred. Frothing mouthed fanatics allied with daemonic beasts and worst smashed again and again against the beleaguered imperial unit.

For 2 days the heretic force pummelled the Imperial bastion before finally retreating. Of the thousands strong unit that first took command of the fort, barely a dozen reminded in battle ready condition with hundreds wounded and hundred more dead. In the commanding officers post action report it was stated that without Martialis’ prodigious psychic gifts holding back the bulk of the daemonic forces the bastion would have been overrun.

Following the battle Martialis was recalled to the Scholastica Psykana’s Calixis headquarters on Scintilla where he was tested, tried and judged by the scholastica’s most senior masters. After nearly a year’s testing and conditioning Martialis was granted the distinct honour of the title of Primaris Psyker. Martialis training wasn’t finished however as he was almost immediately requisition by an inquisitor of the Ordo Malleus. Included in the inquisitor’s cadre Martialis was subjected to further conditioning in preparations for assignment fighting the daemonic threats that stand poised to plunge the Imperium into anarchy and chaos.
