Department-7's Newest Recruits

Monster Hunting in the Real World - Forum
D20 Modern
Estimated Members Requested: 6

Game Description:

[An Introduction]
The world as you know it is not what it seems. Everyday human beings fall prey to monsters that society (and the government) tell us do not exist. Sadly ignorance can not return a child stolen by goblins, your uncle that was bitten by a wolf then went on a killing spree a week later (not coincidentally when moon was next full) or your high school sweetheart that tried to drain your still-beating heart of blood at your high school reunion (you had heard she was hanging our with a strangely nocturnal crowd downtown for the last few years). Unlike those others, though, you are a survivor. You managed to end the infestation of zombies with your dad's shotgun and a rusty wood axe or maybe you saved your spring break party group in Mazatlan from sahaugin (vicious ever hungry fishmen) with some self-made tequila molotov cocktails or even just kept your head and managed to drive the ice drake that attacked your Vale ski lodge over a cliff with a snow plow. One way or another you managed to survive a brush with a creature touched by Shadow...and now you've been recruited by Department-7 to fight the good fight and keep America safe for the darkness.

[Game Master]
Me, Whiskeyjack.

[Game Explanation]
Inspired by gifted authors like Larry Correia (Monster Hunter International), Ben Aaronovitch (Midnight Riot), Harry Connolly (Twenty Palaces), Justin Gustainis (Hard Spell) and of course the ever-popular Jim Butcher (Dresden Files) I've decided to run an Urban/Contemporary Fantasy game. The world will be loosely based on D20 Modern's Urban Arcana setting with a number of tweaks.

Yes "Shadow" is the source of magical things and unearthly creatures but contrary to the setting as written the tide of Shadow has never drawn fully away from Earth. Magic has always worked and monsters have always been around... practitioners of the first and creatures considered the second just keep a low profile. At the time of the game it does seem as if things are spiraling out of control with Shadow newcomers appearing in numbers difficult for the governments of the world to keep up and in many areas battling against established Shadowkind for space or resources to the detriment of the humans around them.

The second major difference is that Department-7 is a United States federal agency technically part of the FBI and as such the Justice Department. Like the Monster Control Bureau from MHI keeping the existence of Shadowkind creatures from the general populace is a major priority, but unlike the MCB it is not their only priority. Department-7 also has massive resources devoted to helping those unfortunates that have suffered from interactions with monsters, the undead, etc.. Rather than just put a bullet in someone D7 personnel are duty bound to try to find alternate solutions as well.

[Application Process]
Post your application here is this thread in the following format:

Character Name:
Gender/Species:
Class (Starting Occupation):

Physical/Personality Description: A paragraph or more (2 max please) describing your character's physical appearance and personality. If you want to put secrets into your characters personality you can "private tag" them in this area. Include how your character reacts to stress/danger, how your character dresses in the field, on leave, etc and how he/she generally deals with others socially.

Background/Writing Sample: This two-part section needs two things. First is a brief rundown of where your character is from, including pertinent details like hometown, living family, tribal relationship, etc. If you are applying with a Shadowkind character be sure to note whether you were born on Earth as part of an existing enclave or you are a new arrival. Either way discuss how you were recruited to Department-7 in the next section. The second section needs to be written in-character and must describe, in part at least, how you ended up getting recruited... what was your first brush with the supernatural and how did you survive it. Have fun with this and let your creative juices flow! Just be sure to use solid grammar and spelling!

PLEASE POST APPLICATIONS IN THE APPLICATION FOLDER ON THE GAME FORUM, NOT IN THIS THREAD PLEASE

[Character Creation]
Creation will be standard for a character starting level 1 using the Standard Score Package for abilities from the D20 Modern Core Rulebook. Don't worry too much about it at the moment though as I don't expect character sheets as part of the application.

[Sources allowed]
At the moment only D20 Core Rulebook and D20 Urban Arcana. We will likely add more books later on.

[NOTES]
Feel free to PM with any questions but know that I will likely post the answer here for all to see (it cuts down on repeating myself).

[SUBMISSION DEADLINE]
I will close the advertisement thread on June 17th at midnight or with at least three days notice if interest seems to be drying up.

Perfect game for me. Will post layer today. Is magic available for human PC's later on in the game?

Posting interest. Will work on an app later today

Just a quick suggestion. If you are going to allow Shadowkind to start you might want to consider bumping the starting level a bit higher. Even something as simple as a drow requires a level bump to qualify. Otherwise the character has no real game difference from a human. I might suggest level three, for those people that might want to play say a pacifist bugbear. It will not really effect the application process since you are not asking for character sheets to start.

I had considered that Shdwrnnr, don't worry about it though as I a few tweaks to make to character creation after selections are made.

considering that you have access to all the non-human races in the DnD phb+orcs+goblins+snakeblooded humans. I don't see how you can come to this impression, there's plenty of non-human options in urban arcana

As I said, don't worry about any of this. Use the rules in Urban Arcana as a basis and we'll fugure out the rest later.

Definitely interested - I've been wanting to play a Shadowkind recently. I think it would be fun, learning to adapt to this noisy, confusing world.

I'll probably end up playing a Charismatic hero, one that had to use a charming way with people to survive in this world
