DnD3.5e: Bastard Sword and Fighters

You'd need about 28 AC for it to be effective 50% of the time, so...

14 Dex (base): free; +2 AC
gloves of dexterity +2: 4,000 gp; +1 AC
+2 mithral full plate: 14,500 gp; +10 AC
dusty rose prism ioun stone: 5,000 gp; +1 AC
ring of protection +1: 2,000 gp; +1 AC
amulet of natural armor +1: 2,000 gp; +1 AC
+1 animated heavy steel shield: 9,170 gp; +3 AC

That's 29 AC for a cost of 36,670 gp. This would leave you with a mere 12,330 gp to spend on your weapon and other goodies. Winged boots or a belt of giant's strength would be outside your price range, but you could get a +1 shock weapon for a little more than 8,300 gp.

Now, if A&EG is a valid resource, you can have a bit more fun.

14 Dex (base): free; +2 AC
gloves of dexterity +2: 4,000 gp; +2 AC
masterwork dastana: 175 gp; +1 AC
+3 chain shirt: 9,250 gp; +7 AC
dusty rose prism ioun stone: 5,000 gp; +1 AC
ring of protection +2: 8,000 gp; +1 AC
amulet of natural armor +1: 2,000 gp; +1 AC
+1 animated heavy steel shield: 9,170 gp; +3 AC

That's 28 AC at a cost of 37,595 gp... but it gives you full move speed and lets you pick up another +1 AC from Dex later on down the line. If your DM rules that you can enhance dastana and that their enhancement bonus stacks with that of a chain shirt, it would be considerably cheaper to go dastana + chain shirt than it would be to go for any heavier armor.

don't forget that if you actually want to wear that heavy armor at no penalty to your spell casting you will need to pick up Battle Caster feat from Complete Arcane
