Description: Always sporting his blue coat, Roland can be easy to spot as he keeps it in pristine condition and buttons glistening. He wears a very fine beard which matches his muddy-red hair. His lean athletic build shows obvious strength lies within his muscles. Standing at 5'8" he is not the tallest man, but upon seeing him it is obvious that he is always keeping a keen eye about.
Roland comes from a long line of druids on his mother's side and a long line of seamen on his father's. He carries both legacies and takes them very seriously. His goal is to always keep an eye about for trouble and an eye to the sky and seas especially. Gozreh, the God of the Sea, is a jealous and fickle god who he often offers food from inland as well as some of his tobacco on occasion in an attempt to keep the God's fury at bay. He cares for all on the ship and sees them as under his personal charge. He enjoys sitting in storms as they remind him of his childhood spent with his mother learning about her ancient traditions.
He is quick to anger despite his otherwise good nature, especially when accused of pretending to be more than he is by wearing the blue navigator's coat.
People aboard the ship know him as a minor priest of the sea and often see him dumping some of his share of food overboard. While most think it strange, those who know of the God Roland serves understand the offerings he makes. The crew also finds it strange that Roland tends to stay on deck during storms, sometimes simply sitting on deck in a downpour. He is a strange man, but one who clearly takes his tasks seriously and completes them quickly.
Roland comes from two lines of people, seafaring from his father and druidic from his mother. He spent most of his childhood with his mother learning Druidic traditions. She taught him the language and the philosophy associated with revering and respecting the power of nature, often his mother would lead him out into a field as a storm raged so he could witness its forces. He grew to be facinated and respectful of the storm. He still to this day finds it calming to sit and listen to the rainfall, thunder and to feel the rain on his skin.
His father took over raising his son when Roland became 14, teaching him how to be a member of a ship's crew. It quickly became clear that the lad had a knack for navigation and forecasting weather (a boon from his mother's teachings). He was taught how to read maps, charts and more how to navigate using the stars. Night has always been his favorite time to work. His father became quite proud of his son and saved slowly until he could buy his son the blue coat he wears to this day, a true navigator's coat.
He left to join the crew of the Mists of Dread knowing it was a swift ship with good reputation. He wished to become a navigator but became a deckhand instead. Oh well, he was sure he would prove himself soon enough.
Roland hopes to one day command his own ship, or perhaps create a temple to Gozreh or even think to have the first floating temple. He laughs at the thought of the last but still both of these are options for him. For now he is simply happy to do what his parents taught him to love, the sea.
