Since it's a free action to end the Resistive Formula, you can do so in response to getting attacked. In effect: You can spend a free action to use them AFTER you've seen the enemy roll a hit, but BEFORE the damage is rolled. Unless the GM vetos such use, at least.

"External threat detected. Allowing more suitable specimen to take care of it," Unit booms out.

"I think he means you," Marisa says nodding towards Erron and Oloben from her safe hiding place on his shoulder. Well, reasonably safe, except for the fact that her newest attempt at clothes seemed to be burned near the edges for some reason.

"Increasing force output by 150%" Unit spews out more information or nonsense, depending on how you look at it.

The dark figure appears next to the gnome in the eastern hallway, his sly flourish a practiced maneuver, whipping the blade end of a weighted chain weapon towards the unsuspecting gnome.

He finishes with a warlock's curse letting the gnome know just how badly his next few minutes are forecast to be.

The humanoid who had seemingly exited through the northern door when the party was first spotted, appears suddenly, wreathed in a cloak of shadows, behind the back of the gnome sniping at the party from the eastern exit. The spiked blade, on the tip of the length of chain he wields, cuts into the flesh of the unsuspecting gnome, who reels about in shock and blurts a gnomish epithet.

The gentle glow about her armor that had been imposed by Unit's resistive magic, flares momentarily as Xyrhanna invokes its protection. At the same time, she uses the distraction to marshal her own flagging resources and steel herself to continue the fight. Drawing upon inner reserves, she blasts her mind once again into those of her molten opponents, her blade the vehicle by which she attempts to deliver her message of wrath. Her blade catches up in the body of the first creature, however, giving the second a reprieve, but felling the first once and for all.

Unit

Unit booms out directives, and Marissa interprets, suggesting that Erron and Oloben focus their efforts upon the more distant threats. Meanwhile, he lashes out with his staff, once again infusing it with some kind of magic that, upon successfully wounding the magma creature, sets up a resonance of power within the attacks of his allies.

Oloben takes Unit and Marisa's suggestion, and raises his bow once more. Taking more careful aim than he normally seems to, the elf ignores the cover provided by the northern doorway, and drives an arrow into the lurking gnome.

Even amidst her pain, Xyrhanna's eyes flare with unholy fire as she turns her glare upon her assailant. The saying, "if looks could kill" might be particularly applicable here, as her opponent bursts briefly into flame prior to the dark humanoid's reappearance.

The conversation between the shadowed figure and the smaller figures causes Erron to pause, allowing the fight to flow on around him. Was there some rift between the larger man and the smaller figures? Captive escaping prey, or perhaps opportunistic underling taking a chance at defeating his masters? Putting it from his mind, Erron simply lifts his free hand and throws a bolt of pure energy at the the same small figure the man had attacked; enemy of my enemy is my friend, and all that.

Okay, so Erron just magic missile-d the gnome. No movement or anything else.

Erron pauses a moment, surprised by the battle breaking out among the enemy, but with a pragmatic shrug, his outstretched hand emitted a bolt of energy that unerringly darted across the intervening gap to bash into the burnt, cut, cursed gnome.

The badly wounded magma claw lashes weakly out at Xyrhanna, but she simply side-steps the pathetic attack and grins as the icy cold of Erron's magical ice field finally extinguishes the last life from the animated magma.

The gnome in the doorway, apparently not a native elven speaker, grins as he hears the darkly clad humanoid making his reappearance, and, after swiftly reloading his crossbow, fires at wounded Xyrhanna once more. His aim is perfect, and Xyrhanna has the disconcerting privilege to watch the crossbow bolt implode upon the magical barrier imparted by Unit's resistive formula where it would otherwise embed into her wide-open and staring eye. It isn't an experience she would like to repeat, regardless.

Meanwhile the other gnome scrambles desperately away from his opponent, turning and hurrying away as quickly as his feet can carry him, scrabbling at the stairs as he tries to climb them and escape.

Steep stairs, we'll call them difficult terrain.

The newcomer disappears out of sight of the remainder of the group as well.

Upon nearing him she slashes with her weapon, cutting deep into his side and drawing a groan of pain.

Erron flinches at the bolt explodes mere inches away from Xyrhanna's face. Knowing the tiefling had taken the brunt of the attack, Erron moves across the room carefully to support her. He also attempts to scan the room for threats they hadn't seen yet- like a gnome or imp yet to reveal itself.

Satisfied, at least for now, Erron throws another magical bolt, this time at the small figure before Xyrhanna- Erron continues scanning the room, not even bothering to watch as the missile made of arcane force and will strikes home.

Difficult terrain and cold effect end when Magma1 dies, FYI.

Erron will move forward, trying to keep G1 in sight and help support Xyrhanna.
