DnD3.5e: LA as EXP Penalty?

   
Trying to play a caster with LA never works very well anyhow, unless it's a very low LA at mid to high levels.

Why just not use LA buy off from the SRD?

Alternatively, I prefer how savage species does it, breaking down all monster HD and LA in one-level packages. Even better would be to make your own monster levels where you spread out the abilities over more HD, but you have no levels without HD, so HD = lvl.
