Where has all the love gone? Or: I miss 2e

Just a quick question: Who else misses 2e? For me, it's the only system that FEELS medieval when I play it. 3.5e just doesn't do it for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm involved in a great 3.5e game right now... that has an ancient greek flavour. Where has all the 2e gone? Why did it go? Was it simply because of the greater marketing stratergies and the introduction of a clunkier system with go faster stripes...?

Are there many out there who feel, as I do, that it is time to strip off our feats, loose our mass skill tables, throw away our prestige classes and go back to our roots?

...3.5 is clunkier than 2.0? Where's that confused smiley...

with the feats and the masses of skills to check and so forth... yes, yes it is. Ok, THAC0 was strange, but defense basicaly is it inverted, and you get higher bonuses to hit higher numbers.

And needing feats to use weapons...? That whole idea is screwy. A feat is a heroic speciality, an amazing thing you are capable of. Putting an arrow in the same spot in a target from 50 paces... not "I can use a longsword!"

And on weapons: In the old days you had to be trainded WITH THAT WEAPON to be able to use it. Believe me, there is a big difference between knowing how to use a long sword and how to use a gladius. Under the new system... you know both... go figure.

Yes, the newer one is clunkier than the old. It just has far too many numbers, slowing up gameplay.

No way. I played 1e and 2e, and I don't miss either of them. IMO, 3e is 100% better, more play options, better ability to abjudicate, cleaner rules, etc.

What I miss is even older: the weapon vs. armor TYPE modifications. Gave you a real reason to use a mace -- it damaged tin cans a lot better than a sword. Slowed things down, of course, but it made the weapons make sense.

3.5 is easier to play, but I keep my hand in with a 2nd ed game. I agree that 1st & 2nd have a better medieval feel.

But then again, I'm probably the oldest person on the site. . .

There are people that take feats to use non exotic weapons instead of just taking a class that knows it?

More complex yes. Clunky, not so much.

I remembered that, and I liked it too. But it was nigh unworkable, it bogged things down so much.

And how old are you?

I'd be extremely surprised if you were the oldest person on the site. I once made that claim to Rigo (that I was the oldest) and got shot down in flames with hundreds of people being older than me. I can't remeber what he said at the time about the eldest, but I can tell you I was checking someones sig the other day and it showed an age of 73.
