New Moon, Old Soul...Tired Feet!
Nov 18 '09, 3:17pm
Dr. Evelyn Archer
Archaeologist and Archaic Language specialist.
Evie is a warm hearted young woman, she loves learning and old things, she has a friendly disposition and but has a streak of steal in her. she is passionate and sometimes learns towards sarcasm and some have found her attitude on occasions condescending but this is only occasionally usually when she is tired or hasn't eaten in a while.
she loves to be creative and usually has half a dozen projects on the go she never has time for. She enjoys martial arts namely Sai and tai chi. and practices whenever she can. She is a 'best friend' or 'little sister' kind of person to most of the people she knows. She misses her family a lot but wouldn't change what she is doing for the world.
Although not religious she does believe there is more to the world than we can explain and has a fondness for 'old' religions especially pagan and northern traditions and the ancient Egyptian, roman and greek gods (although her perspective has change a bit since learning the truth about them she still loves the legends and traditions much to the amusements of her fellow archaeologists and SG collogues. Many see her as a bit of a hippy some of the times but that,s ok cos its just Evie!
at 5'2" she is not the tallest of girls, her layered wavy locks, feathering onto her face, are a dark chocolate brown with dark brown eyes to match. her figure is curvy and healthy though not leaning to overweight as she does exercise regularly to balance a life of study and more so since she had been off world a lot. Her face is pretty and always has a smile ready which brightens her features further. Slight upturn to her noise which had a light dusting of faded freckles (only really noticeable close up!). She often wears a light amount of make-up which is a vivid dark green on her lids and black Kohl which extenuates her beautiful eye, definitely her best feature. But that's it, she has a good complexion so never needs or can be bothered with full foundations and the like.
She dresses mainly in combat trousers and vest tops when working and when 'off duty' she is seen in jeans or skirts, t-shirts or 'hippy' or
bodice style, medieval style
tops, her beloved Dark Green leather jacket and boots. She scrubs up well for occasions and has nothing against glamouring it up. Usually wears greens, purples and blues as her colours of choice. she never wears very high heels no more a 2" despite her hight she does not believe that fashion should be uncomfortable and given her line of work heels are no use on a dig! All in all her appearance is casual and her own she does not follow the ebbs and flows of fashions.
Born in Scotland on the North West coast in 1981 her early years were spent in the rugged remote part of the uk, with no TV till she was 10 (no reception in the mountains and valleys except with satelite) she had only her imagination, the radio and books to turn too. Educated in a small village school she soon showed signs of great intelligence and a love of learning. History being her best loved subject. Her grandfather (an ex teacher himself) had travelled the world first with the army and then as a teacher of English would tell her tales of foreign lands and strange histories and legends.
Life in the Highlands of Scotland meant more than the usual existence of school TV dinner and bed routines, the croft she and her family lived in had no central heating and ran a small farming enterprise. From an early age she and her two younger brothers helped out. Many in the community did things the way they had been for hundreds of years and in a 'backward' way to the modernising rest of the UK. This is where her love of recreational history come from and she began learning as much as she could about historical techniques for things and often spout 'useful' facts about old methods.
When she came to secondary school age wanting to find a better school for their talented daughter her parents moved the family down south where she was confronted with a world she was not familiar with, social behaviours different to that which she had grown up with. But she was quick to make friends and her studies became her fall back solace.
High school flew by and she applied to go to Oxford to study history and archaeology dual degree, she began studying ancient languages as well. Graduating with full honours and 2nd best in her class she She began her masters degree and finally her PHD specialising in ancient cultures and languages. field work was first in digs across the uk and then abroad in france, italy, russia, egypt, asia, southern and northern america. her quest for history was insatiable.
When on a dig in southern Egypt near Aswan her fellow collogue professor Kalvin Walken discover an artefact like nothing they had ever seen before, it was some sort of hand decoration made of metal with a central stone of some kind. Emailing a friend of his he sent photos of her holding the object. With in hours American Air force Officials turned up and closed off the dig. She and Kalvin were questioned about what and where they had found the item. They were asked to sign disclaimer forms and where told the area and the object were now the property of the Government. This incensed the usually mild natured Evie who while not anti-american was annoyed by their attitude and the fact they had just walked in and taken over and possession of what she felt was not theirs but belonged in a museum and just what the hell the the military want with an archaeological artefact?
She started digging online and found an article on no little scorn about an archaeologist who's theories of the origins of the pyramids were fanciful and delusional according to the author. She began searching more on this Daniel Jackson. A few more laughing critics and many conspiracy theorist have views and opinions on the man. Least of which were his involvement with the military and aliens. Laughable, and yet her own indulgence in the realms of fantasy and Sci-fiction loved the idea that there could be a link...no it could not be...and yet here was the american air force here in egypt. Maybe there was a link, may be it wasn't all nutters and coots, what if there was something in it?
She tried to sneak into the dig, got quite far in to the now set up camp before she was caught. She sat in the khaki green tent two guards posted on the outside of the flap, her hand had been bound in front of her in those annoying plastic restraining straps. Well she did kick out a little trying to get away from them, those self-defence classes she had taken which had led her to a new hobby of martial arts, had at least been useful but not when there are several men on duty who where highly trained.
Well, your record is impressive Ms Archer
the voice spoke whilst the man entered the tent.
What did you hope to fine here tonight may I ask?
the man was dressed in uniform but didn't have the look of a soldier to her, he was followed by another slightly older man in combats defiantly a soldier officer she guessed, the men out side had saluted him, she was sure she heard the words Colonel O'Neill..
Evie looked from one to the other, and shrugged,
I don't know maybe, alien devises disguised as ancient artefacts?
she said casually and watched to two for their reactions, neither gave anything away, interesting if there was nothing in it they would certainly react differently surely, oh my god, what if it really is true, she looked at the man, a couple of years older than the picture she had seen sure but it was him she was sure, she continued on her hunch,
Dr Jackson I presume?
that gained a small smile from the man who looked at the colonel before looking back to her.
and did you find any of these 'alien devises'?
the other asked, as calm and as normal as if they were discussing the weather, what could she say, what would they do? threaten her? who would believe her anyway if she were to tell anyone she'd just be another crackpot. but she'd not crawl away just yet, mustering her courage and in a similar nonchalant tone she relied,
If I did I could not prove it, and if I could prove it I have a feeling I would not be allowed too.
she nodded in the direction of the soldiers standing guard.
Then why did you come here, why break into the dig?
Dr Jackson asked a slight crease on his forehead. She smiled at his question, she had wondered the same thing, yet the answer was simple.
Because I needed to know, if...if it was true...wow...history as we know it, everything I have learnt, everything we believe happened...the implications...the possibilities...Dr Jackson you of all people know why...you know why I needed to know.
for a moment their eyes met and she knew he understood what she so clumsily had tried to convey. He nodded slightly and looked at the other man again who nodded approached her, for a moment she feared what he was going to do as he drew his knife, but he took hold of her bound hands and cut the bonds.
Sargent Lucas will take you back to your apartment I suggest you pack, your flight back to the UK is in two hours. Someone will be in touch with you in the next few days. I don't need to say to you not to talk about this to anyone. And by the way lieutenant Rickle's nose is broken, good elbow that was.
she stared at him a moment in disbelief, they were just going to let her go.
Who will be in touch, why?
she asked only marginally guilty about the nose.
the Air force Evelyn, with the details of your new job, if you want it. I suggest you spend what time you can with your family, we don't get many holidays and the pay's crap.
Coronal O'neill dryly replied.
But its worth it
Evelyn spent the next 3 years as a member of the SGC at first on base and then off world. She expanded her linguistics with the exposure to new worlds and histories. When Atlantis was discovered she was due to be sent on the first expedition due to her possessing the ancient gene and commanding knowledge of the language. However bad luck and illness struck, the off world base P3X 921 she was working on in her final expedition before Atlantis. A contagious pathogen ravished the mixed world's population spreading to SG personnel and killing 5. By the time there was a cure and she had recovered the Atlantis team had gone and were trapped. Soon Earth faced a new threat, the Ori. Her studies now encompassed this new culture, till contact was established with Atlantis. The information bursts sent through became her priority cataloguing with the others and learning what she could, she was still hoping to transfer to Atlantis. Her wish was granted, she was eventually assigned to Atlantis, she'd be transported on the George Hammond part of her time aboard the ship was to fully brief those whose first tour of the Pegasus galaxy it was before they arrived. She'd volunteered for the role as it gave her more time to study herself before arriving at Atlantis.
She was in her quarters when the attack happened...
although not overly strong she is toned from her martial arts practice and general from being out and about.
Knowledge (general) D10
Evie is a smart girl, in her field she is second to but a few, and generally she had good knowledge from her time in academia and her own love of finding things out!
when scanning through a text she is quick to pick things up, but generally walking about the place she is no better than the next person and certainly no worse.
ATA gene D8
she has a very strong gene, which is why she was due to be apart of the Atlantis original crew till misfortune struck, she has an almost instinctual use of the tech when she gets her hands on it akin to Sheppard.
Survival skills D10
use of old historical knowledge of doing things as opposed to trained survival, she would apply historical knowledge to the situation how they used to do things we take for granted with tech and mod-con living. She has a general interest in the subject and has been know to watch Ray Mears on occasions, she has also 'picked up' tips from SP personnel she has worked with.
Leadership aptitude D12
if needs be she steps up but is not a natural 'leader' nor has desires to be one, she is opinionated which can often be mistaken for trying to be the leader, and she can make tough decisions but is not happy about it.
She had good intuition which often proves right, she can be a good judge of character though not always! She goes with her gut feelings more often than not and leans mildly towards a belief in the higher self from which guidance comes from rather than a god but not religiously.
She would not say she was either lucky or unlucky, she thinks she has been Lucky in the general sense of good family, great life and opportunities but not say on the gambling table or on a day to day basis.
Earth Historical Knowledge D8
She has studied extensively and is know as one of the top historians in the UK.

Wraith symbols D10
Studied from the information bursts sent through from Atlantis, she can read this language only.
Asgard symbols D8
Studied extensively can read at this level but can not speak/understand spoken to this level.
Earth Computers D12
she knows her was around a PC and Mac and is very competent, but has no great skill in the background working of the tech such as programming.
Ancient Tech (has strong gene) D8
can work Ancient Tech with an instinctual ability.
Goa'uld/Jaffa Tech - (requiring Naquadah) Can't use (tech not requiring Naquadah) D12
she has an understanding of general uses of this type of tech but is no expert.
could read symbols and use generally but again is no expert.
unarmed Martial Arts - D12
defensive mainly but she can hold her own in some occaions but is not a trained fighter other than her martial arts practice.
Armed (not trained) D20
she could pick up a gun or an energy weapon and fire it but has little formal training. She has used Sai in her Martial art training and has a set (mainly for display and practice) which she packs where ever she goes but does not go about wearing them! (unless stranded on a hostile planet
She has no official training or experience of ships but she is intelligent and can work basic tech levels.
