Hello and welcome,

-> Do you remember the good old days ?
-> Are you just curious about how they played the game thirty years ago ?
-> Are you sick and tired of "deep immersion storytelling" or "highly realistic simulation of....whatever" ?
-> Do you just want to have a big load of fun with rules so simple, that a 8-year-old can easily play the game ?
-> Do you enjoy to hack and slash through hordes of monsters ?
-> Starting and ending a good crawl in an oldschool-style-tavern ?
-> Solving riddles and puzzles with wits and cunning, instead of rolling skill-checks ?
-> Just have fun interacting with NPCs, and not trying to be an amateur-actor ?

If you would answer one or more of the questions above with YES then this is the game for you !

Please, before you read on, check the description of my game, for a short introduction to the scenario.

Now, that you've read it, and be still interested, let me summarize the important things about my game:

Estimated Size of Group ? 6 (six)
Campaign World ? Generic Karameikos (Infos will be supplied)
Level ? Starting on 1

Rules: All rules you need, will be supplied. If you want the whole ruleset, you can download it right here. However, if you haven't played OD&D yet, my advice would be: Just relax, and go with the stuff I provide. It may ruin a lot of mystery and excitement if you read the PDF (especially the monsters), but hell - it's up to you.

Procedures: The game would "kick-off" with the good, classic module "Keep on the Borderlands". It's a very nice piece of work, and can be played in real-time within one session. Which means for play-by-post, just a few weeks/month.

After I have accepted "my" 6 players (and please not before), you will roll up your characters in the appropriate thread, which I will be creating.

Posting will be required three to four times per week for normal players, and a bit more often for the current "group caller", if you want to play with one. If you don't want to, then you should be able to post a minimum of four times per week.

Requirements: The reason I want to kick it off with a short module, and not be starting straight open-world-sandbox, is that I want to ensure the reliability of my players, and that they don't fade away. I know how things go in Play-by-Post, and I know why.
Instead of trying to impress me with overly complex character-concepts and such.
Just apply, and write in your application why you want to play here. That's all.
Your character doesn't need a big background, just write a few sentences about his appearance, personality, and maybe what made him curious of adventure. And please - this is important - get a nice picture.
Knowledge of rules or world is absolutely not required.
You should be at least 18 years old, since there may be mature themes involved.

Game Description:

Welcome to
Labyrinth Lord - Keep On The Borderlands

The Realm of mankind is narrow and constricted. Always the forces of Chaos press upon its borders, seeking to enslave its populace, rape its riches, and steal its treasures. If it were not for a stout few, many in the Realm would indeed fall prey to the evil which surrounds them. Yet, there are always certain exceptional and brave members of humanity, as well as similar individuals among its allies - dwarves, elves, and halflings - who rise above the common level and join battle to stave off the darkness which would otherwise overwhelm the land.
Bold adventurers from the Realm set off for the Borderlands to seek their fortune. It is these adventurers who, provided they survive the challenge, carry the battle to the enemy. Such adventurers meet the forces of Chaos in a testing ground where only the fittest will return to relate the tale. Here, these individuals will become skilled in their profession, be it fighter or magic-user, cleric or thief. They will be tried in the fire of combat, those who return, hardened and more fit. True, some few who do survive the process will turn from Law and good and serve the masters of Chaos, but most will remain faithful and ready to fight chaos wherever it threatens to infect the Realm.
You are indeed members of that exceptional class, adventurers who have journeyed to the KEEP ON THE BORDERLANDS
in search of fame and fortune. Of course you are inexperienced, but you have your skills and a heart that cries out for adventure. You have it in you to become great, but you must gain experience and knowledge and greater skill.
There is much to learn, and you are willing and eager to be about it!
Each of you has come with everything which could possibly be given you to help. Now you must fend for yourselves; your fate is in your hands, for better or worse.
Ahead, up the winding road, atop a sheer-wailed mount of stone, looms the great KEEP.
Here, at one of civilizationís strongholds between good lands and bad, you will base yourselves and equip for forays against the wicked monsters who lurk in the wilds. Somewhere nearby, amidst the dark forests and tangled fens, are the Caves of Chaos where fell creatures lie in wait. All this you know, but before you dare adventure into such regions you must become
acquainted with the other members of your group, for each life will depend upon the ability of the others to cooperate against the common foe. Now, before you enter the grim fortress, is the time for introductions and an exchange of information, for fate seems to have decreed that you are to become an adventurous band who must pass through many harrowing experiences together on the path which leads towards greatness.

I am interested. Working on an elf or thief. I'm considering a few concepts based on pictures and when I settle on the picture I like best I'll update this.

Alright.

Maybe I should add here, that the method of character creation will be: 3d6, in order.
However, you can re-roll it up to 7 times (but careful: when you chose to re-roll, you forfeit any previous rolled set of ability scores), so there is a great chance, that you can play the concept you'd like.

But, before you start rolling right here, remember, that the rolling takes place after applications are accepted, and inside a special thread for character roll-up, that will be made then.

Looking forward to more applications

Haven't got time to play, unfortuntately, but I just wanted to say kudos for starting a Red Box game. Still the best edition of D&D in my opinion.

Well, for application purposes then, I want to play because it is nostalgic. I started playing RPGs with the red box and always loved elves. What character I will eventually play if selected will now be dependent on the stats I roll. Whatever it is, I will find a good picture.

Hmm, the Red Box was way before my time, but I've been interested in playing it for a long time. Looks like I'll be writing up an application.

Sounds interesting. Though I probably won't app at this time, I'm getting a bit full up.

Just one word of advice, because it seems you're newish to MW. The boards are strictly PG-13. Those are rules they stick to pretty closely as including "mature content" would jepordize the google ad revenue, and therefore the site's ability to stay up. I would hate to see a good game get shut down because of a little oversight.

Just to note from a modly perspective - mature themes are fine. We do those all the time - killing, and death, grief, despair, loss - we tackle tough, mature topics all the time in a lot of games. Just please make sure that your content isn't graphic sexuality (hi, fade-to-black) or so filled with gore that the actual plot is lost in the pile of limbs and the rivers of blood, if you know what I mean. =)

From a non-mod perspective, this looks interesting and makes me moderately sad that I'm full up on games at the moment.

Haha, I love that.

I think you will get a lot of us who have played the original (yes, 30 years ago) but still enjoy the simplicity and excitement that came with something new and kind of clumsy.

I would like to state my interest and hope that this game goes off.

Well, I'd like to get in on this. I've played enough of 3.5 that I've gotten past the power gaming aspect and enjoy the character fluff moreso, and am learning D20 Modern's slightly different rules each time I pick up the book on a monthly basis.

I've got to say that I would love to experience what the joy (or hell) of 1.0 is like. I'll get on top of the application process as soon as I wake up.
