You need a reason to be in the area. This is a frontier town, the furthest SW any civilization has gone on the continent. Work is obvious, there are an infinite number of reasons for a fifth level character to strike out on their own; that’s the fluff application. There is money to be made here, land obtained too, if you’re ambitious and not afraid of orcs. Racially, the area is 78% human, 16% Elf, 3% Halfling, 1% Gnome, and 2% other. Humans are the only civilized race out here. All other races descend from native tribal communities. History and role-play should reflect this. Orc population is probably 3 times the elf population. I would entertain a half-orc PC, but I would have to be convinced that you could kill orcs, or at least convince an NPC that you can. It woud be difficult to exsist in towns.
This world is a dynamic world. It has a number of NPC’s who are moving from day to day. Time will be kept for travel and encumbrance will be noted. Did I mention this is a rather tough and rainy place to live? Maps will be drawn and position in my world will be monitored. You will need to survive for days at a time, potentially longer, depending on what you end up doing. I have “bosses” strategically placed; I will attempt to guide you through specific tasks via story at first, like a module, just to get a feel for the amount of rolls necessary for survival checks and spot checks and difficulty and the like, I’ll also to get to “bosses” appropriate for your level. Some bosses could potentially outclass you by more than 5 CP, if you’re out wandering, which is fine if you want to try it, but be warned. You may need to run to survive, no shame in it. Obviously wilderness skills are helpful. I will railroad as little as possible if at all, but only to move a potential story line.
