3.5 Sub-Classes

Sub-Classes are a way of offering players extra options to their character without overpowering them or over complicating them like the Gestalt option has a tendency to do. Sub-Classes are recommended when you have a small party, or are looking to make sure all party roles are filled.

Upon character creation, a player must choose a specific Sub-Class. It cannot be changed throughout the course of the game, representing some kind of inner tendency towards a certain way of life. Your Sub-Class levels up at half the rate of your total Hit Die, rounding down on odd levels. A character gains a certain pool of bonuses based on which Sub-Class chosen, with some caveats.

  • If one of your Sub-Class skills is shared by your main class, you gain a further +2 synergy bonus.
  • If one of your Sub-Class proficiencies is shared by your main class, you gain a +1 misc. bonus on attack rolls (if it is a weapon) or a +1 AC (if it is armor).

A character's Sub-Class grants him a number of bonus feats as per the Generic Classes, and spells if using the Spellcaster. All abilities / skills / feats gained via a Sub-Class can NEVER count as fulfilling prerequisites for Prestige Classes, unless your main class fulfills them also. You do NOT gain any other bonuses from the classes.

Special Note: Bonus feats may be traded for class abilities as normal per the Generic Class rules. However, you may NOT gain any abilities or feats that replicate anything your main class already gets (Fighter bonus feats, Rogue sneak attack, Barbarian rage, etc.). The Rule of Common Sense is in place as well, meaning that unless a character is striving towards a goal in-game, he cannot take a certain class feature (Barbarian taking Sneak Attack, Rogue taking Smite Evil, Wizard taking Wild Empathy, etc.). Note that the Rule of Common Sense is subject to the DM's approval and view on the situation. Example: Torg is a Fighter 3 / Expert 1. He gains a bonus on 2 saves, Martial Weapon Proficiency (Battleaxe), and gains the skills Jump, Spot, and Listen. Since his Fighter levels give him access to the same proficiency and the Jump skill, he gains a +1 bonus on attack rolls with any battleaxe, and a +2 bonus on all Jump checks. Torg also wishes to gain Sneak Attack, and so each time he fights an enemy, he makes a spot check during the battle to notice any weak spots. The DM approves and allows Torg to take Sneak Attack next time he is eligible.
