Fingal (Tertius Magnus Maximus)
From Myth-Wiki
Contents |
Character Name
His Pagan name, which he favours, is Fingal.
As the child of an Elf, he also has an Elvish name, Tertius Magnus Maximus (after his ancestor).
Campaign
In Burning Logres, BW Elves are reskinned as Romans, and Orcs are reskinned as Saxons. Inspired by Pendragon, although not so much about knights.
Concept
A young Pagan with a romantic vision of becoming a bard, a warrior-poet of Logres.
Background
The Roman (elvish) princess Aurelia Atella was one of the few of her people who remained in Logres after the legions were recalled in 410. Just over twenty years ago, she spent a few pleasant nights with a human descendant of Magnus Maximus.
She became pregnant, gave birth, and named her new son Tertius Magnus Maximus, third of the name Magnus Maximus. Soon afterwards Atella married Lord Roderick, Earl of Salisbury. Atella has never said who fathered her son, although most assume Roderick was the father.
Tertius was raised in the Court of Salisbury. Neither Roderick nor Atella ever suggested Tertius was Roderick's son. Atella had high status at Court both as Roderick's wife and as a visiting princess of absent Rome, and was given the Cymric name of Rowena. Shortly before Tertius' tenth birthday, Atella received the news that Rome had fallen. She turned away from everything that reminded her of lost Roman glories, and taking her son with her, left the Court in the middle of the night.
She abandoned Tertius soon afterwards. He spent some years as a vagrant, growing into a teenager. Eventually he found his way to the city of Sarum. There he was mentored by the scholar and historian Patrick, who named him Fingal, but never learnt his heritage. After several years unofficial study, Patrick is urging Fingal to consider his future.
Kicker
Yesterday, Fingal got into a fight with some Christian students from the cathedral. During the fight he took a blow to the head, lost a Steel test, and for a short time had the Second Sight trait. To himself, he could see things differently. People had auras of different colours. Things also, but less so. Somewhat distracted, he's beaten down and laughed at.
Potential Kicker responses:
- The Christian students take over a hangout formerly used by Celtic street kids.
- Atella appears for the first time since abandoning Fingal, pushing him to join the Christian student gang and take it over.
- Patrick wants Fingal to spend more time studying and less time fighting - intends to ground Fingal.
Fictional Aims
Fingal participates deeply in the Celtic world, and gradually builds up a coalition for unity - even involving elements of British Christianity. His Spiteful Roman mother sees many opportunities for him to be as great a leader as his ancestor, and restore the Roman Empire. Along the way he discovers he is Gifted and plays an important role in defending Logres from the Hateful Saxons.

- pursue enough scenes and activity with the Followers to earn a reputation amongst them
- Circle up the leader (who has a reputation within the Followers and is therefore easier to Circle), get a name and a couple tests towards a relationship
- use the -wise to establish the leader has Sorcery
- Make the leader agree to teach Fingal Sorcery... and Enchanting
Beliefs, Instincts & Traits
Beliefs
- I am a Pagan, following the old ways: I will become a famous bard, a warrior poet, serving the ancient gods of Logres, public advocate for Paganism. I will find a fellow outcast, who I will convince them to publically celebrate the rituals of the full moon with me.
- In return for an invitation to the festival of Eostre, I have promised Deidre that I will get historical stuff from the Priest of Lugh. And maybe lie to him?? TBD
Beliefs (session 1)
- I am a Pagan, following the old ways: I will become a famous bard, a warrior poet, serving the ancient gods of Logres. First, I will find a member of the Followers of Mab and get an invite to the festival of Eostre (celebrating the first full moon of spring).
- I am a proud and energetic Pagan. Those Christian bigots Herne and his friend think they got the better of me yesterday. I will give Herne a black eye!
- A Pagan should know how the gods look upon his birth and that of his friends. I will convince Patrick to let me help construct several horoscopes, starting with my own.
- To succeed, I must reveal my parentage to Patrick.

Duel of Wits Log
Results (usually compromises) made from Duels of Wits, and how they turned out.
- (Haggling versus test, rather than DoW) Fingal agrees with Deidre he will recover the ritual for summoning Queen Mab from amongst the histories kept by the Priest of Lugh. Then Deidre will introduce Fingal to the local leader of the Followers at the next public ceremony. (Session 1)
Gifted Stress Log
Fingal can re-use the last result. These results are the main observable way Fingal's untrained Gift will manifest, so the log helps with Fingal's self-knowledge and his use of Misunderstood.
