A World of Heroes....
One of the major things setting this world apart from real Earth are the heroes. They exist in every culture, and have since the beginning of time. Each one of them is clearly gifted with supernatural power, surviving wounds no mere person could survive and commanding immense power. What are the origins of heroes? How are they chosen? Every culture has attempted to answer these questions with varying degrees of success. Below is what is known by a majority of educated people...
The Chosen of the Gods - Divine Heroes
These heroes gain their supernatural abilities directly as gifts from the gods of the Astral Sea. Powerful enchantments put in place after the Primordial War prevent the gods from manifesting in the Mortal Realm, so they appoint Heroes to carry out their work for them. Not all members of a church are Divine Heroes. A majority of village priests and even many high-ranking bishops are normal old people. Likewise, not all Divine Heroes affiliate themselves with a church.
The Masters of War - Martial Heroes
This group of heroes are perhaps the most enigmatic. From unconquerable generals to mighty battle captains to elite commandos, these heroes are those throughout history who have seemed to be born to thrive on war. Their power seems to stem not from gods, spirits, or magic- but from within. Even untrained, they can take on dozens of skilled warriors and come out on top. Today, they are largely employed by the militaries of rich city-states or corporations (especially Arcanite Mining Consortiums), or belong to the recently formed Martial Guilds that hire out their services much like a combination of a mercenary company and a worker's union.
The Spirit-Touched - Primal Heroes
Found mostly among the less-civilized tribes in the wilder regions of the world, these heroes have an innate connection to nature and the spirits that invisibly direct it. They serve as political, religious, and military leaders among most of these tribes, and represent their greatest warriors. They are overall the most well-integrated into their societies of any type of hero, and face less of the fear and resentment that some of the other types of heroes receive from commoners.
The Arcane Artists - Arcane Heroes
It is said that once, the art of magic was available to any who would care to learn it. Today, only a few are born with the raw talent to harness the geomantic ebbs and flows of magical ley lines that cross the world. Knowing how to tap into such energies gives one the keys to manipulate reality itself. Some even believe that it was through these very Arts that the primordials and gods shaped the world in ages past. Heroes of this type are often the most feared, and the more powerful ones are regarded often as Weapons of Mass Destruction by civilized societies who seek to control or destroy them.
