Standard English is the legally proscribed language of the United Council. While teaching and learning other languages is allowed, conducting business in any language except Standard English is criminal.
Some of the outer colonies, especially those who desire to minimise their connection to the United Council and Earth, use alternate languages. Sometimes these are pre-war languages, and some are entirely new.
