ZOMBIES
The first wave of the virus was airborne, it spread quickly and incubated for days. By the time it was clear there was an outbreak occurring the virus had spread across the globe and it was impossible to trace the origin. Some people were immune to the airborne virus, but many were not. The virus was always fatal for those infected, and once they died something more horrible happened. The dead would rise, not as themselves, but as violent, bestial creatures that lacked any of their former humanity, but were full of a desire to eat the flesh of the living. It was discovered that the walking dead transmitted a faster acting version of the virus through their bites that affected even those who had been immune to the virus before. By this time there were too many people who were sick and little organized opposition to stop to the hordes of undead that began to overrun towns and cities across the globe.
It is now five weeks after the first reported cases of the virus. The world as humanity knew it is over. The government has collapsed. The power is out and the water has stopped running. The highways and roads are clogged with wrecked and abandoned vehicles. Most of the remaining survivors have been driven from their homes and are doing the best they can just to stay alive. No one knows for sure how many people might still be alive, the last news broadcasts before the power went out were spotty at best, but it's obvious the dead greatly outnumber the living. There was some talk of the Navy housing refugees on ships at sea as well as rumors of small towns who had fortified themselves against attacks. But for most survivors there is no safe refuge, there is only the thin hope of staying alive another day.
